Poured into a weizen glass.

A - A pale yellow coloration, hazy and unfiltered, the way a hefe should be. Nice head with moderate retention.

S - Deliciously complex, boasting hints of banana, lemon, nutmeg, clove, and other spices I cannot readily identify.

T - The banana flavors aren't as prevalent as the nose led me to believe, but there are some there, along with touches of citrus juice and orange peel.

M - Light bodied with a relatively mellow carbonation. Finishes pretty clean and is ultimately refreshing.

D - For an American rendition of the German Hefeweizen, this is pretty spot on. Picked up a sixer of this and thoroughly enjoyed the majority of them, I ended up giving 2 away because I wanted others to try this tasty brew.

Kellerweis Hefeweizen bears more than a passing resemblance in aroma to a Belgian ale: strong notes of banana and clove, mixed with only slightly less potent apples, pears, apricots, and coriander, all atop a biscuit-like layer of toasted grains.

On the tongue, the brew remains close to a Belgian, the banana and clove translating well, with the background apples and pears still quite prominent. The toasted grains are more present here, with good layers of wheat and cereal rushing across the tongue. A slight background sourness recalls Flemish ales, and helps counter the sugars. The aftertaste is more banana and clove, and fades relatively slowly. Mouthfeel is medium, and carbonation is medium-high.

Overall, this is a good beer, though as is obvious, I think it bears more in common taste-wise with a Belgian than with a Hefeweizen, so the name might be misleading to some. Still, the flavors in here are excellent, and the beer is worth a try.

Poured into a hefeweizen glass.

A: Cloudy light brown color. Nice head that leaves good lacing.

S: Wheat. Banana. Spices like clove and cinnamon. Yeast funk.

T: I thought I hated Hefeweizens, and then I tried this one. Good wheat and spice flavors. You definitely get a bit of yeast in the flavor.

M: Nice and creamy but light, if that makes sense. Absolutely fantastic mouthfeel.

O: the beer that made me realize that Widmer was lying to me. I have thanks to this beer explored and found a few Hefeweizens that I really enjoy.

A- Pours a light orange color w/ a nice one finger off white head, which lingers for a bit. Bits of yeast in the bottom float on top of the head. Very cloudy looking beer that looks the part for the style.

S- Wheat, malt, yeast, clove, banana. Fairly well balanced as well- a fine example of the style.

T- Same profile as the nose, with the wheat, malt, and yeast being in the front, banana and clove fade a little. Nice citrus aftertaste as well. This is a really good hefeweizen, just not quite good enough to bump it up a notch.

M- Silky yes... Smooth, not as much. The hops and citrus have too much of an influence for that. That's OK though, it's right on par for the style. Fairly big body for a hefeweizen as well.

O- This is a nice brew for the style- recommended. I've had better hefeweizens, but a solid effort by Sierra Nevada. Cheers!

Poured a hazy straw/golden color from a 12 oz bottle, with no ABV or freshness on the label.
One finger head that dissipates fairly slowly.
Aroma is strong on fruity esters, especially the aroma of ripe bananas (isoamyl acetate). Hints of clove and coriander come through with some yeast.
Taste is also along the lines of the aroma, fruity with hints of yeast. Nice lacing along the insides of the glass.
Crisp and refreshing hefe, perfect for a nice, hot sunny day.
Has all the makings of a perfect summer ale and also a nice sessions beer. Sierra Nevada doesn't disappoint with this ale.
Definitely worth a try, especially for all hefe lovers. Highly recommended.

Bottle poured into pint glass. Bottled the 168th day of 2011.

A- Murky dark, almost brownish yellow. Thick with yeast. Two fingers white head, which laces nicely. Beautiful looking hefe.

S- This is great smelling hefe. The typical banana smell of a hefe comes through immediately when poured. The clove smell is very present as well. There is a nice underlying spiciness when you get your nose in the glass.

T- The taste is slightly subdued vs. the smell, but not by much. Clove up front, banana on the finish. A wonderful underlying spiciness, that is enough to notice, but not enough to take away from the key players.

M- Light, but creamy. Thick with yeast, but easy drinking. Perfectly carbonated. The 5 is well deserved here.

O- When this beer came out a couple of years ago, I wondered how well SN would do with the style. I shouldn't have, as the boys out there have way more hits than misses. This is an excellent hefe.

12 oz brown Sierra Nevada bottle poured into a Sierra Nevada Glass loaned to me from my cousin. After this experience, I bought my own glass from S-N.

A - The look of this hefe is remarkable. A very hazy golden yellow in color. Somewhat reminds me of a hazy straw color. Cloudy or hazy. It's just a pleasant looking brew as is most hefe style beers. The head is thick and off white in color. It subsides a bit as it sits, but still remained enough to know it's there. A good amount of creamy lace as well.
S - smell is sweet. Smells like a hefeweizen. Definitely a clove smell. But also Some spice. It's a real fresh, soothing smell. I could somewhat pick up a note of a fresh grassy smell and maybe some black pepper but seemed faint to me unlike the other notes I picked up.
T - Very refreshing and smooth. The first main taste I experienced was a banana taffy like taste, but as I adjusted to the brew, It somewhat reminded me of a sweet banana bread. Lovely really. The other notes I got were clove, A little spice, citrus, and a little grain or wheat. All of these were well balanced and bound together nicely.
M - I found this a to be a great tasting beer that's easy to drink. It's not overpowering and I didnt expect it to be. It's medium body and taste make a clean crisp style. Well done.
O - Just started experiencing Sierra Nevada brews. And I really don't know why I waited so long. This brew is a stunning piece of craft work. And is the brew that sold me on Sierra Nevada as a brewery. It's one of the best Hefes I've tried from anywhere. Yes, even Germany. A real winner here. A Must try.

Poured from a 330ml bottle into a Chimay goblet.

Pours a nice hazy orange colour with a good lively head.

Smell is faintly lemony, grassy and fresh. Bit of spice coming through too.

Taste is a good example of hefeweizen taste. Fresh, thristquenching yet complex and spicy/tangy even.

Overall a great summer drink - good show Sierra Nevada!

Stubby 12 oz bottle into a 16 oz tall pilsner glass. Swirled and poured in the last 2 ounces.

A - Cloudy light orange/dark yellow body. Dirty soapy off-white head.

S - Fairly typical hefe smell. Wheat, lemon grass, clove, black pepper and a hint of meat.

T - Similar to the aroma. Light wheat flavor and some lemon and belgian yeast. Mild spice and sweetness towards the end. Faintest hint of bannana. Carboantion is nice, but the bodys pretty thin.

O - Witbiers really aren't my style, so much so that Allagash white was a drainpour for me. Something about the clove, black pepper and lemon grass that reminds me of lunchable grade sausage. I can do hefes though, and this one is really solid. Certainly the best American hefe I've tried. As always with SN, its priced extremely well too.

I really like this beer. It is really surprising for me to have this beer taste this good and it not be from a German brew haus.

The appearance is what I would expect from a hefe; nice and cloudy...with some sediment on the bottom of the bottle.

The smell is really nice...very aromatic of wheat and citrus. The taste is very nice...balanced, smooth, and crisp. The mouthfeel is great...it is crisp and light; very refreshing.

Overall, I really do enjoy this beer. It doesn't quite have the same flavor and feel as a Franziskaner...but it is rather close. I recommend this to anyone...very nice beer.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a wheat beer glass.

This brew pours a hazy yellow color with three fingers of quickly receding head. Lacing is very dense. Aroma is full of wheat, banana, citrus, and spices. Plenty of clove (the enemy returns!) The taste is solid for a hefe, it's got some nice spices and wheat going down, then turns crisper with some of the citrus as well as light malts shining through. The mouthfeel is nice, it's crisp and juicy, and the drinkability is fairly good. Overall, a good Hefeweizen, but the style's still not a favourite of mine.

I am a BIG fan of Sierra Nevada… and while I knew they made several other brews, I am not sure I could tell you a single other beer they make. I just always go back to… to Sierra Nevada. But this beer is fairly new to the lineup, as it is only a few years old. It was actually not brewed until 2009. Needless to say, that doesn’t excite me so much… especially since beers tend to get better with age.

The beer pours cloudy, almost like a wheat. But it’s not a wheat… it’s a hefeweizen. I would love to spend some time in Germany just hearing locals talk like this. I would order a Bud Light just to see their reaction! So what’s this beer smell like?

It smells like a wheat. It has a few things going on in the nose… and I get a hint of spice that I am not used to. It smells different, but promising. But that’s it taste like? Better than the nose, that’s for sure. WAY better. What a great mouthfeel. Oh man, that is a good beer.

One word that comes to mind is velvet… it’s smooth across the palate, and then settles toward the back of the tongue. It slides down the throat and leaves that typical wheat aftertaste, but a meager more sublet and accepting aftertaste than expected. There is little carbonation, and based on the head from this beer you would think it would be big… but it’s not… only smooth from start to finish.

The beer has a pretty low ABV, which makes this beer extremely drinkable. It’s a good summer beer… and I don’t say that because it’s the summertime! I say that because it’s clean, crisp, smooth and just enjoyable. I really like this brew, and I would totally order this and buy this again. I had no idea they even made this, now I want to get a six-pack right now! Bottoms up people!

Very, very cloudy light golden in color, head starts big and sticks around.

Smells of big weizen/wheat aromas, citrus and banana.

Taste is refreshing, flavorful and smooth. Notes of banana, citrus, clove and grainy wheat--none overpowering the other. In this summer heat right now, this is delicious.

Mouthfeel is light-bodied, with modest carbonation.

Never been one of my favorites styles, but this is a great example of it.

A: Pours a hazy golden color with a finger of white head

S: Some citrus zest, some spice, a bit of banana, and a breadiness

T: A bit of citrus flavor, a touch of spice, but mostly bland and a bit sour.

S: Loads of banana and clove dominate the nose. Also getting some some bready malts, maybe some citrus hops, and then there some spiciness like white pepper to this hefeweizen.

T: Great flavor that follows the nose very closely. Again, getting loads of white pepper, banana, and clove. But also picking up some spicy yeast and cracker like malts.

M: Light body; tingling carbonation; smooth and crisp mouthfeel.

O: This is a great session beer. The price is fair and it's easy to find almost anywhere. One of my favorite go-to beers.

12oz bottle to weizen glass.
The appearance of this hefeweizen is cloudy and orange-yellow. It really looks like a glass of fresh squeezed orange juice. This is after swirling and adding the yeast from the bottom of the bottle. With a rocky white head and some nice lacing, this beer looks great. Smell is mostly wheat and peppery yeast with a touch of clove and lemon. Palate is balanced and tasty. Some citrus and banana along with a bit of clove. Mouthfeel is creamy with a good amount of carbonation. This is a great hefeweizen and one that I could drink all day.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a glass.

A - Opaque, hazy golden with an off-white/tan head about two fingers. No lacing.

S - Smells mostly of clove, lemon, and honey. The bottle suggests banana aromas, but I did not find any. A bready-wheat smell.

T - A slightly bitter wheat with an additional bitter note from the clove. With each sip, the clove becomes more prevalent, and the sweetness of the banana finally shows through with an aftertaste that builds.

M - Mildly carbonated, good body. A silky brew that ends up finishing dry.

O - I would encourage anyone to try this beer, it's a top notch Hefe.

Kellerweis Hefeweizen from Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. pours a golden gold from a 12 fl deep dark brown class bottle with a pry off cap.

Light tan Head is billowy and thick with capricious amounts of fine foam bubbles.

Pallet is spot on tart wheat, accompanied by refreshing and delicious citrus notes with fig and a soft clove, that builds in intensity to a full clove aftertaste. Banana makes its presents known late in the tasting, subdued, and subtle.

Hard to find a good American hefeweizen, this is one of them.

I drank this from a pint glass...

It is opaque, golden, yellow with a thin white bubbly head. The smell is mainly banana and clove with just a hint of wheat and lemon. Tastes exactly as it smells but with an additional bubblegum flavor. The mouthfeel is silky, medium bodied with soft carbonation and a dry finish. This hefeweizen can hang with the best in the world.

Kellerweis pours a cloudy golden body with a pillowy ivory colored head. Sheets of lacing will form a circle around a well poured glass. Aromas of wheat crackers, zesty clove, and over-ripe bananas offer an enticing preview of things to come. The palate only reinforces this. Malt flavors, sweetness, and hop bitterness are all appropriately mild to allow the yeast character to truly carry this beer. Banana, clove and lemon flavors are unmistakable and very refreshing. The body is smooth, silky, and nearly velvet-like, the ideal foil to Kellerweis' brisk carbonation. Add it all up and you have a full-flavored, but thirst-quenching beer that can bring you solace on the oppressive summer days to come.

12 oz. bottle into a Perfect Pint.

A: A big, fluffy meringue head tops a mildly hazy yellow-gold body with lots of carbonation. Almost the platonic beer look, quite attractive.

S: A little bit of sweet wheat and some spicy hops, banana and clove dominating, but not too strong. Not a ton else going on, but pleasant.

T: Great, easy flavor: not too wheaty and thick, but certainly the kind of sweet banana flavors you expect in a weiss beer. There's some hops, but not much, subdued.

M: Nicely balanced between body and carbonation--a bit of chew, but moderate bubbling to keep it moving along with a nice tingle.

O: A really easy summer drinker, and a good, inexpensive American rendition of a style dominated by Germans. One of my favorite SN beers.

12oz brown bottle, coded freshness date on the label.

Massive head from pouring 2/3's of the beer into the glass, sediment swirled in for a dirty cloudy straw color. Banana taffy, powdered clove and chalky yeast play well against the breadiness ... banana bread? Deep smoothness that still retains a crisp snap in the back, medium bodied is not too much for the style. Semi-thick bready character throughout, mild spicing and faint esters. Overripe fruit and clove, some tartness adds a refreshing quality. Semi-dry finish.

Absolutely remarkable that this beer has flown under my radar for so long. Giving the Germans a run with this one.

A: Pours a light amber color with a two finger foamy head common to hefeweizens. Tiny bubbles continue bubbling up from the bottom.

S: Bready malts, banana, light spices (cloves maybe) and other typical aromas to hefeweizens.

T: Much like the nose, bready malts a little bit of banana and a few light spices. A degree of fruity yeast as well.

M: Somewhat of a light body with a bit of carbonation that works well with the flavors and bites the tongue a little bit.

Poured into my weizen glass this beer is a cloudy lemon yellow with one finger of bright white finely-bubbled head. No lace.

Scent is spice, lemon and tangy yeast

Taste is quite spicy with cloves, coriander, black and white pepper. Lemons and lemon zest. Tangy and tart. A hint of banana; less than other hefeweizens.

Mouth starts sharply carbonated but ends velvety.

Very refreshing. Love the spiciness. Would appreciate a bit more banana. Good solid hefeweizen.
