This was a beer I've wanted to try since it's release and unfortunately just got around to now.

The wait was well worth it.

A - Straw golden yellow color. Fluffly inch head. Quickly dissipates to a small white ring around the top of the beer.

S - The smell was actually a bit of a turn off to me. The smell was really just, ehh. Kind of a wet rotting leaf smell, mixed with banana. Seriously, the best way I can describe it is during autumn when it rains and all the leaves on the ground just get soaked and damp. Yeah.. that's the smell.

T - Thank god the taste is a hell of a lot better than the smell or I'd have trouble stomaching this one. (It's rare in my experience that it actually happens like this too.) Banana and clove dominate the taste. You can taste a hint or lemon, or my mind could just be playing tricks on me. I would have prefered to have a stronger banana taste, (even though it dominates the taste it doesn't really smack you in the face like you'd want) It's more of a dull banana taste, although not the least bit bad.

M - A very thin almost watery style too it. Very crisp though.

D - I won't even beat around the bush and say yeah.. pretty good session beer. YOU CAN POUND THESE. I could sit here and drink these all day long.. if they didn't have alcohol in them that is.
But definitely very very drinkable. I'm convinced that even a beer drinker wouldn't taste this beer and spit it out and say disgusting. It's that good.

One of my favorite beers.

Appearance - Poured into a mug. Has a nice hazy, opaque golden color with a fluffy two finger head that dissipates to a thin white ring.

Smell - Exactly what you would expect from a hefeweissen: spicy bananas and cloves. The bananas are taking a backseat when compared to the lemony spiciness.

Taste - taste is similar to the smell: banana, cloves, and a little lemon. Again, there is less banana here than in I would have expected.

Mouthfeel - a little thin and carbonated, but, all in all, not that bad.

Drinkability - This is an very good session beer. Not on the same level as the Weihenstephaner, but the best American hefe I have had.

Pours a slightly hazy light straw-gold initially; the final 3oz of the 12oz bottle is mixed and then poured over top. The straw-gold is interrupted by a cascade of cloudy tangerine; the yeast concoction gives a nice well-rounded color to the brew. Nice creamy head & lacing as well.
Smells heavily breaded from the wheat; clove is mixed with a lemon scent and only a hint of the trademark banana.
Flavor resembles the scent; wheat mixes with the clove and citric quality, which is none too tart. The banana is only a hint, rather than being at the forefront. All the elements are somewhat subdued and blend together very well.
Crisp, refreshing and not as powerfully acidic as others of the style. Very drinkable.

This is the best American hefeweizen put on the market yet. The banana-clove element is apparent without being overpowering, and well-balanced by the wheat.
The one hefeweiss bier west of Germany which could hang with its Bavarian counterparts.

This did not have enough "Weisen" character for me to be considered a classic Hefeweizen. It's almost a combination of a lager and heff. That said, it was very good. Maltiness was a good combination with the hefe flavor and it tasted a little stronger than the abv suggest. Worth trying if you see it.

Pours a great looking cloudy, unfiltered golden color. There is a good amount of carbonation with a HUGE thick white head that stays throughout the entire brew. This brew looks a lot more like a German hefeweizen than some of the usual American knock-offs.
Smell is good for a hefeweizen. A great wheat smell dominated by some really nice banana and spice smells.
Taste is very nice for an American hefeweizen. The good wheat base is there along with the strong banana and spice aftertaste.
Mouthfeel is much thinner than I would like from a hefe. Not the thick smooth drink that normally comes with it.
Drinkability is good. One of the best American hefeweizens I have ever had. It has a great look, smell, and taste, and as with most hefeweizens I could drink this all day long.

It's a good cloudy hefe. Pretty tart and lemony in taste. One can really appreciate how cloudy it is for a hefe since a lot of them don't get this cloudy. Something to be said about a cloudy hefe. The nose is quite citrus in nature. The beer goes down smooth as the carbonation dances on your tongue. Leaves a desire to replace that sensation with another pull.

12 oz bottle poured into a weizen glass. I've been drinking this since it became available in Chicago in June. I wanted to let my opinion settle after the initial excitement before reviewing.

On the pour, it is a classic hefe. Nice pillowy three finger head which dominates the appearance. Cloudy pale yellow brew that complements it nicely. The head fades to a thin blanket, and there is a minor amount of lacing.

The aroma is strong with banana, clove, citrus, etc. Very essential smell for a Bavarian wheat. Fantastic for an American offering, but just good across the style as a whole.

Flavor wise this comes off with the typical characteristics but has very little sweetness. This is probably the standout characteristic on this because a lot of German wheats that I have had tended to show a sweeter side than this. This one, however, has a little more bite on the finish and leaves the palate in a crisp way. There is a mild tart citrus as well.

The mouthfeel is great. Freshness really helps the beer here. The carbonation is well balanced and the beer feels hearty yet light. Very refreshing.

As has been said countless times, this is one of the best American interpretations of this style. Being able to get this style of beer fresh at many local stores for a good price makes it a fantastic offering from SN, even if the beer is not quite "world class".

This hefe pours a beautiful golden blond into my duvel tulip with a pale head that sticks around and offers lovely lacing. The aroma has a malty sweetness, wheat and banana notes. The taste is very well balanced, clean (skip the lemon wedge) - light esters but not overly so. Mouthfeel is light, clean, appropriate to a hefe. Drinkability is very good, especially as the summer heat has not yet given in to autumn. SN has really done well here. I previously reached for Widmer, but SN has outdone Widmer with this one.

(Served in a Weizen glass)

A- This beer pours a solid hazy orange body with a slight brown hue to it making it to murky to see any carbonation except for a few tiny bubbles sticking to the glass. The head is a creamy off white that soon turns rocky and last for a good bit.

S- There is a slight septic aroma that is like damp leaves that has a faint fresh tomato quality to it. The finish is a green herbal pine hop aroma that balances the other smells nicely.

T- The soft chalky note leads to a yeasty lemon hint that has a light spring water taste. The finish is a soft green tart hop flavor that has more hop characteristics as the beer warms but still stays soft.

M- This beer has a full mouthfeel with no alcohol heat and a very soft fizz finish.

D- This beer has qualities of spring creek water and soft yeast and hop notes that support those flavors. The flavor is very interesting and remind me exactly of my grandparents of farmstead in the fall. The flavors are not but have some great character.

Poured into a Sam Adams glass.

A - Pours a strong straw golden color with some orange hues. There was a nice 1.5 in. head that is very dense and recedes very slowly.

S - Nice grassy and banana smell with some cloves in there as well very mild but appealing.

T - The cloves come through immediately and so does the banana. It also has a very nice malty and nutty fell. The phenols are very present and give a nice dry hint to the rest of the beer. Overall very good creamy taste.

M - Creamy and crisp at the same time!

D - Refreshingly awesome!

A- Hazy yellowish orange color that is familiar with hefeweizens. Great head and nice retention.

S- Very yeasty and bread like. Getting some smell of cloves, but the yeast smell is almost a little overpowering in this beer.

T- Clove, banana, yeast flavors that I love in a hefe. Only problem is that they are not as strong as compared to some great German hefes. Certainly not bad at all as you can see by my rating, but would like a little more boldness in the flavor.

M- Nice thin mouthfeel making this beer great for relaxing on a hot day.

D- I would find it hard for someone to complain finishing this beer. Would also be easy to go back for a second.

A: Cloudy pale straw, fluffy white head, good retention and lacing

S: Yeast, straw, citrus, clove, banana

T: Yeast and straw... muted flavors of citrus, spice, clove, white pepper, banana. Nothing overpowers and not too citrusy.

M: Light to medium bodied, crisp, clean, refreshing.

D: Delecious Hefe, nothing too crazy going on here, which is good cause some hefe's tend to be too citrus leaning.

A: Poured from the bottle into a snifter, swirling twice to get all of the yeast at the bottom. The beer is a very pale hazy orange with yellow highlights. Fluffy white head started off strong, but quickly died down to a thin layer at the top. Lacing is evident if not overwhelming.

S: Smell is all spice. There is a little banana in there and just the faintest touch of hops. I guess cloves are the closest to what I'm smelling. I recognize the aroma, but I can't place it exactly.

T: Lackluster. The yeast flavor is not as prevalent as I would like and the beer tastes a little off, like it has gone bad. Kind of like drinking a hefe out of a cardboard box. Bittering hops are definitely up front and battle a little with the flavor of the beer. Not nearly as much spice here as in the aroma.

M: This beer a little thinner than I expected and kind of feels flat on the tongue.

D: A refreshing beer, but not one that I could session. One or two would be plenty, thanks.

Overall: I am really surprised at how highly this beer is rated. It comes up well short of the better hefes I've had (Franziskaner and Live Oak) and fails to impress.

12 oz stubby bottle poured into weizen glass. There is a huge glob of yeast at the bottom, so it is absolutely worth it to swirl the last quarter of the contents before pouring into the glass. By doing that you can watch the milky yeast rotate through and mix with the hazy orange/peach colored body.

That extra shot of yeast makes the clove and banana esters just pop. It is a sweet tingly spice in the nose, and that's how you know it's a real hefeweizen. There are a lot of American unfiltered wheat beers that have hefeweizen on the label. An unfiltered wheat without cloves is an unfiltered wheat. Nothing wrong with that, but it is what it is.

Taste comes through with the cloves, but the tartness from the wheat keeps it from getting out of control. Nice light body with a mild creaminess to create a smooth experience. Even though it has a lighter body, I find hefes to be filling. After a couple I feel satisfied.

12oz bottle copped singly from Total Wine and More in West Orange... Copper-colored hue... Minimal head and lacing... Not much to write home about. Aroma reminiscent of cloves, banana peels, and fresh yellow peppers. Crisp, dry mouthfeel with an overall easy level of drinkability.

Poured into a imperial pint glass. 2 finger, fluffy white head. Creamy orange colored body that is very hazy. Lots of carbonation is seen on the edges of the glass.

Smell is very nice. Good amount of banana, cloves, wheat and estery aromas. Very crisp.

Taste has some nice hints of cloves and good amount of banana. Nice amount of estery flavors as well. Nice crisp finish leaves you with a very very mild bitter finish. Good amount of wheat. Overall this has a great balance to it.

Mouthfeel is superb. Very light, highly carbonated. Has a nice slick body while having a dry finish.

Drinkability is VERY good. Great balance of flavors with a very clean finish that leaves you wanting more.

Overall, to me, this is one of, if not the best American made Hefe's i've had. Makes for an amazing summer beer.

A: Poured very murky into glass. The shade of yellow is constantly changing due to the cloud shifting inside the glass and settling. Thin head, however, it seems to be lingering.

S: Bread, fruit, subtle spice

T: Very much a hefe. Slight alcohol as it warms. Hoppiness is pretty absent, sweet malt is present but not over bearing. What I guess I can describe as yeasty, which makes sense.

M: Coats the mouth with a delicious blanket. Tingy and smooth.

D: Goes down well, almost too well. Going to need anohter very soon.

A bright yellow, super murky liquid rests under a pillow of threew inch high airy white foam. Too cloudy to see any carbonatin rising. Only a few lace ribbons.

A nice clove scent was the first to burst in the nose. A very faint lemon rind and banana background is a bit more subtle then most beers in the style.

Overall crisp lemon flavors have a nice backing of wheat behind them. Hops flavors added just the right finishing bitterness to keep the flavors balanced nicely.

Thick without being chewy. Carbonation bubbles without overpowering the tongue.

A good brew. This is a great summer fare brew. Cheers to Sierra Nevada for yet another solid offering in their lineup. Good choice for a hot summer day.

12oz bottle purchased at Jim's Homebrew I forget the cost. No obvious freshness date, but I believe it's a summer seasonal first released this year, so age shouldn't be an issue.

Poured a hazy straw color, with a creamy looking white head that hung around for a while. Globs of lace stuck here and there on the sides of the glass.

Earthy and grainy in the nose. There's also some spicy cloves and a slightly tart, lemony, note in the background.

Funky grainy taste combined with tart and spicy notes. Not as much bananna as I've tasted in other hefes, but it's there as well. Tart, slightly dry note at the swallow.

Somewhat light bodied, yet with a fairly creamy mouthfeel.

An easy drinker that might be better on a hotter day. Today it's sort of cool and cloudy, but I would still consider sessioning this if I had more on hand. Not bad.at all.

Enjoyed on 09.04.09 from a 12oz brown bottle (WITH POURING INSTRUCTIONS!!! - more craft brews should do this). Poured into a hefe glass.

A: Big, hazy deep yellow color w/a thick and creamy white head. Very good retention & gorgeous lacing.

S: Notes of clove, apples & banana. Perfect for the style.

T: Wheat & yeast which is balanced by the noticeable, but perfect amount of hop oils. Good cloves here too & banana of course.

M: Full, creamy body w/ a dry finish.

D: An extremely sessionable beverage - perfect for Labor Day weekend. Well done S/N.

Color is a hazy pale golden yellow. Pours 2 fingers of creamy white head. Nice retention leaving some splattered lace.

Aroma: typical hefe aroma. Bananas, cloves, orange peel, lemon zest, wheat. Not to bad.

Taste: Big banana and clove taste with some mixed spices. Nice fruit flavors with orange peel and lemon zest. Very similar to the aroma. Wheat of course. Not to bad.

Mouthfeel: crisp and smooth. Light bodied with a good amount of carbonation. Ends with a very dry fruit and clove aftertaste.

Sierra Nevada brews horrible beer in my opinion and I can't stomach then one bit. If I'm offered a free pint of it, I turn it down. That's how much I hate them. Oh, I've tried to like them, believe me. I've sampled a lot of their beers but they all taste the same and I can't stand their hop profile.

BUT this one is amazing. I'm flabbergasted at how good it is. It's almost like some other brewery made it. Beautiful hefe cloudiness and color, fantastic malty banana sweetness with a hint of cloves. Amazing head retention with some lacing, stellar champagne like carbonation and a very small hop presence. Fantastic example of the style, hats off to you Sierra Nevada.
