Sierra Nevada has done it again. Not only do they have the quintessential pale ale, but now I think they have given the world a Hefeweizen that others can compare themselves to. Hat's off to they guys in Chico for another great beer.

Had a fresh bottle recently that was markedly better than I remember. The body still doesn't seem quite right, lacking the sort of bouyancy I expect from the best German iterations, and that seems to become more apparent as you go. But, man, out of the bottle this thing sings, lovely nose of apple/peach/banana...pretty much just oodles of fruit. Looks the part more or less, solid enough head (though, again, maybe not quite as everlastingly fluffy as the best Germans). Palate has a sort of juicy quality, some apple/banana notes, and deep in there somewhere there has to be some hops, because this never gets excessively sweet. Overall, it's nice to have something like this consistently available and fresh. If I can find fresh Weihenstephaner, I'm headed there for sure, but this ain't a bad drink at all.

After having a Hoegaarden (my personal favorite beer), we will see how another similar style stacks up.

It looks : Hazy yellow orange glow with a nice tightly knit three finger head.

It smells : Orange, banana, clove, cardamom, coriander, baked wheat. Just superb. There is also some faint metallic hop that slurs the perfect score a bit.

It tastes : it's a bit on the hoppy side for the style. The smooth wheat body is there and finishes strong with wheat, but in the middle is a slight off-putting bitter hop and orange peel. It doesn't quite balance. There's also clove and citrus, cilantro, malts.

Mouthfeel : very carbonated, yet still creamy and smooth within the style. Ends grainy and rich, slightly dry.

Overall : it is far from the best genuine Belgian and German beers, but I'll never turn down a Hefeweizen. This one was a bit too "Americanized" for me, but perhaps I'm just a wheat beer snob. Still worth a try, but doesn't touch the Franziskaner or Weihenstephaner offerings.

A - Foggy yellow-gold brew, white head, some significant lacing.

S - A bit funky, with a sour grain note, earthy, a touch of hay and grass.

T - The yeast is forward, with a strong grain element laying the foundation to fruit esters suggesting kiwi more than banana, and a strong minerality. Hops also present, adding a bit of bitterness on the close.

M - Crisp, clean and bright.

O - It is a rock solid Hefe, although a step below the standard set by the likes of Weihenstephaner. Without the explosive fruit esters, this is a study in restrained classical beauty, delicious, and a wonderful beer to pair with a variety of foods.

Hazy golden body and a thick voluminous white head.

Spicy clove heavy on the aroma. Banana and some wheatiness.

Flavor follows suit with spice in the forefront with banana and some crisp wheat in the back.

Oh ya the mouthfeel is great. Creamy and bubbly.

12 oz. bottle dated 1/9/15 poured into a nonic pint glass. Consumed and reviewed on Monday, February 23, 2015.

L: Pale gold hue with a frothy, two-finger, yeast-driven head. Poured the remaining yeast dregs out on top of the foam. Hazy appearance is very appealing.

S: Earthy, yeasty, banana esters, clove and spice phenols, some nutmeg.

T: An appetizing combination of fruity esters and spicy phenols – very refreshing. Banana, mild citrus notes, bready malts, pepper. Slight earthy hop presence on the back end. Delicious and complex for a Hefeweizen.

F: Medium body. Mouthfeel equipped with a creamy fullness. Effervescent and spritzy; medium-high carbonation.

O: Another well-done beer by Sierra Nevada. Sadly, I’ve been overlooking it since its release but not anymore. I’ll now gladly add Kellerweis to my “regular rotation” especially since SN’s large distribution footprint allows easy access to it fresh.

This beer was wonderful. I had it with some sushi and it paired very well. Not my usual choice of beer style but it fit with dinner. Maybe I'll give a few others a go.

Surprised at the color l and cloudiness of this beer. Nice orange color when poured into a tulip glass. Could not see through the beer, dense appearance. Liked the flavor very much. On the first sip it seemed coriander was leading the charge, but that changed quickly to a fruit/syrup taste on the front and a clove on the finish that was no overpowering. Very good stuff. Would revisit.

Very familiar for a heffe which is rare for an American brew using open fermentation. Sierra Nevada has never failed me. Good stuff. Banana, nutty, coriander...all the usual suspects present.

On tap in a traditional pint glass. Wonderful copper color with slow fading foam. Nice notes of toasted malts with coriander and very subtle hops. Very nice balance of spices and wheat cut with just enough citrus to create a beautiful taste from the begging of the end. Slightly hoppy at the back of the tongue to remind you it's brewed by Sierra Nevada. Medium mouth feel that isn't too watery to too heavy. I really like hefeweizens and this one of my favorite hefeweizens.

12 oz bottle, poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy, yellowish/copper color with a quarter of a finger of white-colored head that quickly dissolved away into a thin lacing of foam that completely covered the top of the beer.

Aroma: Very aromatic with aromas of toasted malt, imparting notes of toasted bread and whole wheat crackers, followed by aromas of banana, clove, coriander and a touch of ginger. Very traditional in its aromas for a weissbier.

Taste: Nice flavors of toasted malt, and tropical fruit, such as banana and pineapple, followed by some spices of clove, black pepper, coriander, a touch of ginger. There’s some good candied sugar-like sweetness too.

Mouthfeel: Medium, medium/thin and pretty effervescent as there is some good carbonation to tickle the taste buds. With an ABV of 4.8%, there is no alcohol on the palate.

Overall: I’m not a huge fan of hefeweizen beers, actually, I’m not even a little fan of them. Usually they have way too much flavors of banana and a plastic-like Band-Aid smell and taste to them that I find very off-putting. That being said, this beer, while possessing a touch of banana, doesn’t go over-the-top with it and has none of the other flavors that I don’t like in most hefewiezen beers. I actually liked this one! Recommended for fans and non-fans of hefeweizen beers alike!

Nommy. No off flavors, pretty color for a hefeweizen. Extremely likable in a sort of a moderate 'there's not really anything to dislike here' sort of a way. If I had a friend who was new to hefeweizen and I wanted them to like them, I would start by introducing them to this one.

Re-rating after trying bottled version. Very impressive beer.

Look: Terrific golden, cloudy appearance with a half-inch head that dissolves into a lacing.

Smell: Crisp, subtle nose.

Taste: A burst of fruity, banana-like depth that lingers in a bready aftertaste.

Feel: Smooth, cool.

Overall: Great version of the Hefeweizen, one of the best by an American brewer.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a tall hefe glass.Even though I poured at an angle, I had to stop the pour and wait for the foam to settle.

A: Cloudy straw color, huge foam that recedes slowly. Spotty lacing and very little visible carbonation.

S: Great smell of fruit, some spice and yeast.

T: Malt throughout, fruit, the cloves and bananas are there all right. Very subtle bitter toward the end.

M: Medium-low mouthfeel, very easy to drink.

O: Great implementation, can proudly stand up to its German brethren.

When I think Hefeweizen, I think in German! But even though this is not German made, it is certainly an excellent Hefeweizen. The floral and fruity aroma is top notch. The taste is just right. There is little that can refresh better than one of these on your front porch on a hot summers day. This is one of my favorite go to's.

Only my second Hefeweizen (after Blue Moon) and enjoyed it more than that one but I think I'm not a real fan of the style. Nice hazy golden look in the glass and a light head that didn't last. Fruity aroma in the glass with the banana mainly coming through. Similar with the taste where the fruit dominates with a little bit of clove or spice and very slight dryness in the aftertaste. Would be happy to drink this again on a hot day but not a style I'd choose on a regular basis.

Excellent hefe. 35 cl bottle found in off licence in Naas Co. Kildare Ireland. Best before 20-03-2015. The banana comes through nicely. Sorry that I only got one to try. I love the label too.

Poured from a 12 OZ bottle into a pint glass.
Aroma- Doesn't smell like a hefeweizen, i get spice and fruit.
Appearance- A slightly murky golden color with a small white head. Doesn't look like a hefeweizen.
Taste- Has a nice semi-tart flavor but doesn't even come close to a hefeweizen stle beer in the flavor department.
Palate- A medium bodied beer with moderate carbonation and a dry finish.
Overall- Not a bad beer but it is not in the flavor category of a hefeweizen.
O: good, but not memorable;

S: clove, nutmeg, banana, a little grain;

T: follows the nose, with the addition of a mild tartness from mid-palate through the finish;

M: light to medium bodied; tingly carbonation; dry finish;

O: good, but not memorable;

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a Shaker pint glass.

APPEARANCE: pours a very densely, clouded, golden color with one finger off-white head that dissipated until a thin broken layer of bubbles remained, there was very little lacing on the glass, lighter carbonation (I think?) as could not really see the bubbles through the dense haze, beautiful.

SMELL: sweet, flowery, citrus, banana bread and some spice, there is a lot going on with the nose on this one, in a word complex.

TASTE: the taste follows the nose, initially sweet and citrus, then some banana bread and spice, a mild hop profile as you would expect for this style, wonderful.

PALATE: lighter carbonation, the notes on bottle state "velvety texture", I'll go along with that, it has it's own mouth feel for sure.

OVERALL: this beer will be hard to top, this is my favorite Hefeweizen hands down, another great beer from Sierra Nevada, the ABV 4.8% allows me to enjoy more than one, if you enjoy the style this has to be a favorite. I'll be having this again for sure.

From a bottle into a tall weisse glass
A: golden hazy cloudy yellow, big billowy head that leaves great lacing
S: ripe banana, lots of clove, some fairly clean grain
T: follows nose...the clove, while not overpowering, is more pronounced from the get go, and stays with me throughout, even while some toasty bready malts and very faint floral/citrus notes come through at the end.
M: smooth and a even creamy; middle of the road for carbonation; little more rich and chewy than many hefes.
Overall: one of the better American hefes, no doubt. Will have to do some side by sides...

12oz bottle into tulip

Appearance - Pours a stunningly glowing, murky golden hue with 2 fingers of fluffy white head. Great retention and lacing, looks amazing!

Smell - Yeasty over-ripe banana and clove action dominates, but is balanced by a lemony snap, a note of fresh honey and clean grain adds to the nose also.

Taste - That beautiful hefe yeast is pushing the banana/clove, fruity/spicy goodness straight to the front where it needs to be, then starts giving way to a mildly sweet, honeyed cereal grain which is quickly kept in check by snappy a lemon note. Ghost-like herbal/grassy hops seem to add depth and balance along with the smallest tinge of bitterness in the dry finish.

Feel - Maybe the best part about the beer, which is saying a lot. Body feels so light and airy due to the perfect level of tight carbonation, but also feels silky and creamy at the same time. Extremely refreshing.

Overall - Absolutely superb, Kellerweis rivals any German hefe I've had with ease. Thing is, being only 4.8% ABV, it's actually carved out its own little niche - so light feeling yet packed with so much flavor, this brew is maximally refreshing. As so many others, SN completely nailed this beer (and it's about $8 a sixer to boot!)

This was my first experience with what would become my love affair with Hefeweizen. An awesome example of the style & the best one made outside of Germany that I have had to date. Kudos to Sierra Nevada for the exceptional job they have done in creating it!

Not my style, but had to try.
A: Cloudy, good head, lots of carbonation visible
S: Fruity, banana, spicy
T: Lots going on here, banana, spicy, fruity
M: Light body with a tart feel to tip of tongue, but flows smooth
D: For me not being into wheat beers, still quite good, would not send it back
