A total amazing pour, dark, dark like a stout with a creamy ling lasting white head.
The aroma was perfect like a deep rich stout, the smell was stout like, and the initial taste I thought I was in stout heaven.

But, overall it was lighting than a stout, but it had the coffee and chocolate I love.
The finish to this beer was even better than the start.
I loved this one

750ml bottle, Batch 2 (from 2011), poured into a Cantillon taster 7/7/2014.

A- Dark mahogany body with a half finger white head with limited retention. No lacing.

S- Smells interesting. A bit of cardboard, a bit of dark fruit, and a predominant sweet sugary maple syrup-like scent. This has clearly oxidized over the last 3 years, and while it still smells interesting, I am sure that it did not improve much, if at all.

F- Maple syrup, candi sugar, caramel, toffee. This has the elements of a generic strong ale with a distinct syrup character. There is some oxidation that detracts from it, though.

M- Medium body but with a sticky syrupy consistency on the finish; lower in carbonation, a bit difficult to drink given the strong oxidation that has taken place over the last 3 years despite being cellared properly in a wine fridge.

O- If you are still sitting on bottles of this, I would crack them open and see if it's come to a place where you like it. I don't think this has done very well with age on it.

Opened up a bottle of batch #2 from 2011. There was a vigorous pop when the cork was pulled. Poured into a goblet.

This beer is veer deep mahogany color with light caramel head that dissipates leaving a thin coating of bubbles around the glass. The aroma is dark dried fruits and tobacco. The flavor follows suit with a sweet caramel and raisin start. It finishes with a slightly bitter taste with a hint of roasted smokiness. It is a good balance of sweet and bitter. The mouthfeel is quite right. It is just thick and syrupy enough, but has just the right amount of carbonation to keep it light and drinkable. Overall, this is a very good beer. I wish that I had a few more bottles of this one. It could definitely last a bit longer.

1PT. 9.4 FL. OZ. bottle
Served in a teku glass
Batch 2 (2011)

A - This is a dark beer bordering on black. When held to a light source some ruby highlights are visible. A couple inches of mocha head top it off.

S - The smell consists of molasses, figs, and dates. There is plenty of sweetness. It kind of reminds me of a molasses cookie.

T - Alcohol is noticeable in the taste but not overwhelmingly so. I get some dark fruit and molasses. I can also taste the maple syrup in the finish.

M - Thick, smooth, and creamy.

O - This beer has aged wonderfully. I love the thick mouthfeel. Although I can taste the alcohol, it still drinks remarkably well. I am definitely glad I aged a bottle.

2nd Edition poured from a corked and muzzled bottle with no freshness date (bottled by Sierra Nevada ca. late 2011 and aged at cellar temperature) into a Rastal Teku 2.0 stemmed glass.

A- Pours deep mahogany (black if not viewed without a strong light, or focused on the edges of the glass) with a 1/2 finger of a creamy, beige head which dissipated quite rapidly. (4.25)

S- The aroma is sweet. Toffee/Molasses (think: tootsie roll) and maple syrup hit first followed by some dark, vinous fruits (raisins, dates, figs, plums). As it warms, the dark fruits mellow in favor of some milk chocolate some earthy spice. (4.25)

T- Along with the dark fruits found in the nose, a milk chocolate/cola flavor is also immediate on the palate. Mid-palate is met with a rather big shot of vanilla. The 'pseudo' barrel characteristics become more apparent once things warm to room temperature. (4.25)

M- Sweet up front followed by (thanks to a bit of aging) a dry, tannin-like finish Much like the appearance of the head, the bottle conditioning creates an absolutely luscious and creamy texture on the palate. (4.5)

O- Although I did not review this fresh (as I remember Life & Limb v2 being cloyingly sweet), the 2+ years of age has done this beer remarkably well. American Strong Ale is a good category for it, as it is quite complex and possesses qualities of an Imperial Stout, Belgian Quadruple and the earthiness of something that might construed as being barrel-aged. I would not purchase a case, but being a fan of both of these breweries, this stands to be one of the most enjoyable collaboration (and aged) beers I have sampled...well done! (4.25)

In review is a 2011 vintage.

A - Pours a dark mahogany cherry brown color with a toffee colored, creamy, viscous-like head.

S - Dark roasted caramel/toffee, molasses, brown sugar, figs, vanilla, dates, some maple aroma, and some alcohol character.

T - Follows the nose. Molasses, some brown sugar, and mostly maple, vanilla, chocolate, and dark fruit (dates, figs, prunes). There is some alcohol effervescence but very, very little for a 10%+ beer.

M - Heavy medium body, lightly syrupy, velvet-like on the tongue.

O - This beer has aged gracefully in a good way, glad I sat on it.
