Poured a 12 ounce bottle with a bottled on date of 48th (2/8/2010) day of 2010 into a dimpled mug.
A: Golden color, a bit hazy with some a few particles floating around. Great head retention and good lacing on the glass.
S: Nice balance of bready sweetness, hay notes, and a bit of alcohol. Little caramel in there as well. Nothing overpowers.
T&M: Starts off with bread and pear sweetness up front. Touch of caramel makes for a nice malty backbone as well. Dry, haylike, floral notes that is matched my a slight tingle from the alcohol and bitterness from the hops leads a to a semi-sweet finish. Great firm mouthfeel that is not overcarbonated, and just a tad creamy.
D&Notes: This is overall a very solid spring offering from SN, and more importantly that being a good beer, it's further proof that SN can easily break out of their hoppy mold and brew an excellent beer. Overall, it's a solid, drinkable, higher alcohol Helles, that is what seems to be what the style should taste like (I don't have an authentic basis for comparison). It really drinks more like a regular strength ABV brew, so you have to be a bit careful!
I see several people saying they miss the ESB. While I thought it was an excellent beer, I am actually glad that SN is trying new things, and offering more variety. Nothing beats a good, authentic, German Lager, that is brewed fresh in the U.S.
