Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a dimpled mug. NOTE: I am not too familiar with the style
Appearance: Pours a pale, crystal clear golden-orange, with three fingers of frothy white head. Lighter than I expected, but I understand this style is supposed to be lighter. The head subsides very slowly, and leaves tons of lacing.
Smell: Smells a lot like a pilsner, with strong scents of grassy hops. A mild sweetness from the malt in the background backed by a slight spicy smell.
Taste: Incredibly smooth. Mild sweet malt, with the slightest lemony-citrus kick in the background. Grassy hops pervade the taste as well, and the finish is crisp and smooth. Absolutely no hint of the alcohol. This doesn't taste like any other bock I've ever tasted - tastes much more like a pilsner. If this was presented to me blind, I'd say it was a pilsner. There is a very noticeable hop flavor, but there just doesn't seem to be a strong enough malt balance - the malt is very mild tasting in this beer.
Mouthfeel: Good carbonation, and not too thin. Feels nice on the tongue.
Drinkability: Definitely a beer I could kick back a few of if the ABV was a little lower. It is very easy to drink and very smooth. My biggest gripe with this beer is the style - while again, I admit I'm not too familiar with Maibocks, all of the characteristics of this one, absent color, point more to a pilsner. I might rereview this once I've tried more in the style. Still, a solid, if unspectacular, beer.
