A - Pours a deep dark brown/black and has a dark tan head that laces the glass dramatically as it settles. It is not transparent in the lighting I have at the moment.
S - Dark coffee and chocolate sweetness. Strong roastiness that reminds me of an imperial stout. Strong dark fruit esters. I don't detect the hops or the juniper yet.
T - Really nice balance of sweetness and bitterness. The combination of roasted malts and what I assume are aggressive IBU's does not overpower with bitterness. The caramel toffee and dark fruit sweetness are held in excellent balance. I have a hard time recognizing the juniper.
M - Thin, yet with alcohol warmth. Creamy texture.
O - This is a really nice beer. Well crafted. They could have jumped overboard on the malt or juniper profile, but it worked out really well.

On tap at Toronado in San Diego, CA.
Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, citrus zest, and slight juniper berry. Taste is much the same with a cocoa flavor on the finish. There is a medium amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is interesting but isn't as juniper forward as I was expecting.
