Juniper Black Ale
12 oz brown bottle
Served in a 20 oz tulip glass
Pours an opaque black with some ruby highlights toward the bottom of the glass. Nice looking beer with a fluffy head on top. Looks like a stout or porter, but after I take a whiff of the nose I know this is a different beast.
The nose if floral and fragrant, I smell pine cones & citrus fruit. The mouthfeel is really interesting and quite tasty. Dark roasted malt flavors lay down a nice base with some coffee flavors and the hop finish is a serious punch to the taste buds. Flavorful hops with hints of freshly cut lime and orange.
This beer gets better by the sip. Another winner from Sierra Nevada.

On tap at Toronado in San Diego, CA.
Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, citrus zest, and slight juniper berry. Taste is much the same with a cocoa flavor on the finish. There is a medium amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is interesting but isn't as juniper forward as I was expecting.
