My first trip to Band Camp, err I mean Beer Camp.
This is a very impressive beer appearance wise, really deep black body with a humongous sticky mocha head. Lots of lacing, and great retention.
The aroma is also extremely pleasant. I grew up around the sweet smell of Juniper and their berries, and I think Sierra Nevada has done this beer it's justice. Rich chocolate malt, with undertones of wood. Along with sweet pine needles and a touch of evergreen. Aroma is pushing the RIS style, and reminiscent of some of the top end Stouts or Black IPA's. It's familiar, yet intriguing. As it warms, you also get some coffee beans, vanilla, oak, bourbon, and dark fruit. Very complex, and highly appealing aroma.
First sip brings on some great heaviness on the mouthfeel, very full bodied. Perfect carbonation. There is a huge malt presence here, lots of chocolate/coffee/earthy malt. Lots of sappy resinous pine, evergreen, oak, and wood. Just a really creative blend of flavors here. The hops work together with the Juniper nicely, adding to the complexity and balance. Juniper Black finishes dry with some nice lingering bitterness, in which all the flavors meld together. It's not without fault though, unfortunately some strong ethanol is present near the finish.
I appreciate this beer, for many reasons. It's complex, it's interesting, and it breaks down a few style barriers. It's a Black IPA, Double Stout, Winter Warmer, Black Ale, RIS. Whatever you want to call it. It's good. Real good. The best part about it was picking out each and every nuance in this one. It gives you a lot to think about. Is it the perfect beer? Not even close. But what it is, is interesting and intriguing. Something to sit down with and just enjoy. Hope you guys enjoy it as much as I have.
Cheers, from the Houston, TX Beer Camp.

On tap at Toronado in San Diego, CA.
Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, citrus zest, and slight juniper berry. Taste is much the same with a cocoa flavor on the finish. There is a medium amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is interesting but isn't as juniper forward as I was expecting.
