Bottle into tulip.
Pours deep brown to black, with a beautiful, creamy, dense tan half-inch head on top with amazing, solid walls of lacing. Beautiful from top to bottom.
Nose is packed with juniper and piny hops, minty, with a solid foundation of chocolate underneath, and just a bit of caramel.
Taste follows suit - chocolate, dense piny hops and juniper. Moderate bitterness, light roastiness, and a minty bite from the powdery chocolate and dense piny notes. Long, full finish carries the juniper and piny hop bitterness for a long, long time afterwards.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, just a hint of creaminess, cut by the astringent hoppy acidity. Smooth, light carbonation.
Very nice beer overall. Everything went together really well - I would love to see this one the shelf regularly.

On tap at Toronado in San Diego, CA.
Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, citrus zest, and slight juniper berry. Taste is much the same with a cocoa flavor on the finish. There is a medium amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is interesting but isn't as juniper forward as I was expecting.
