This was a great addition to the Beer Camp pack. Thick oily black with moderate tan head, this beer certainly looks like a black ale. Nose wasn't too great for me, as I was getting some off aromas... mildew-y aromas even... I didn't like those. I'm not sure what in the beer could make that, so I'm guessing it might be my buddy's glasses... but I don't know. Underneath, however, were some roasted malts and a bit of pine. Flavor is robust--big roasted malts followed by a swift crack of resiny hops. Juniper isn't super apparent in this beer, but I don't care. It's quite flavorful and good. Thick feel, a bit heavier than I was in the mood for actually. Overall a nice beer that I was glad to try. I would buy a 6-pack of it, if SN offered one.

On tap at Toronado in San Diego, CA.
Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, citrus zest, and slight juniper berry. Taste is much the same with a cocoa flavor on the finish. There is a medium amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is interesting but isn't as juniper forward as I was expecting.
