A: Poured from a 12 oz. stubby bottle into a 16 oz. Guinness glass. 2-finger thick, foamy head with great lacing, and a tar-pit black body.
S: Sweet and malty, with a hint of the juniper alluded to in the name. Suggestions of raisins, prunes, "GORP," toasted caramel malts.
T: Slightly sweet up-front with a malty mouth and a toasted, roasted, smoky swallow. Dried fruit, mild licorice, burnt molasses or caramel, coal smoke, pine resin, prunes. Good complexity of flavors in the mouth with a bone-dry, scorched-earth finish. Quite a trip.
M: The head feels good on the lips, but the feel doesn't live up to the flavor complexity. A touch thin in the mouth with a big, arid after-feel.
O: When you drink this beer, it is akin to coming into a fire-warmed cabin from a lip-chapping winter's day.

On tap at Toronado in San Diego, CA.
Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, citrus zest, and slight juniper berry. Taste is much the same with a cocoa flavor on the finish. There is a medium amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is interesting but isn't as juniper forward as I was expecting.
