Poured from 12oz bottle. Thanks to betsona for sharing htis one with me.
A- Pours a pretty black color (we were outside drinking this at like 3am so I didn't have much light to really get into a real depth of color). One finger tan head shows medium retention. Light globs of lace on the sides of my glass.
S- Juniper and bittery earthy hops (mostly pine) come through the front of the nose. This is completed by a nice underbody of roasted malts with hints of chocolate. The alcohol really comes into it's own at the end of the nose. A interesting aroma overall.
T- Right off the bat pine hops kick into overdrive with juniper acting as a nice balancing flavor. This just like the aroma has a nice roasted malt body right behind it. The middle of the beer lays off the pine and adds chocolate into the mix with hints of toffee malts. Ending shows more of caramel and toffee malt mix with light sprinkling of juniper and piney hops behind it. Alcohol is present but doesn't ruin any flavor going on in this beer.
M- Medium mouthfeel. Carbonation is good for the style. Juniper and pine are left on the palate. Aftertaste is light alcohol, juniper, caramel malts, and hints of piney hops. Flavors were pretty well balanced. No off flavors when drinking this beer. Medium alcohol drying on the palate.
O- This beer was good. I am not normally a fan of things with juniper in them but this one wasn't bad at all. In fact I quite liked this one a lot. Nice one to end the night with.

On tap at Toronado in San Diego, CA.
Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, citrus zest, and slight juniper berry. Taste is much the same with a cocoa flavor on the finish. There is a medium amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is interesting but isn't as juniper forward as I was expecting.
