Pours a jet black, with a motor oil texture. Somewhat piney, slightly harsh/phenolic & aggressive hops on the nose, which follows through to the palate. Smooth dark malt character can be detected, but is overwhelmed by heavy piney, earthy, citrus hop character coming through with the beer as it goes down. Mouthfeel is quite soft and creamy despite the prickly hoppiness - maybe a result of the high gravity and resulting body. Very assertive bitterness, which is the only thing slowing this down from being a super easy drinker. Alcohol hits at the end but its mingled together with the bitterness, so its hard to notice - but it can be sensed.
Nice black IPA, or perhaps a double black IPA? Although the hops have a hard time shining in a high gravity dark beer.

On tap at Toronado in San Diego, CA.
Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, citrus zest, and slight juniper berry. Taste is much the same with a cocoa flavor on the finish. There is a medium amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is interesting but isn't as juniper forward as I was expecting.
