Notes/Commercial Description:
A group of hop-heads and publicans challenged our Beer Camp brewers to push the extremes of whole-cone hop brewing. The result is this: a 100 IBU, whole-cone hurricane of flavor. Simply put —Hoptimum: the biggest whole-cone IPA we have ever produced. Aggressively hopped, dry-hopped, AND torpedoed with our exclusive new hop varieties for ultra-intense flavors and aromas.

Resinous "new-school" and exclusive hop varieties carry the bold and aromatic nose. The flavor follows the aroma with layers of aggressive hoppiness, featuring notes of grapefruit rind, rose, lilac, cedar, and tropical fruit—all culminating in a dry and lasting finish.

Hoptimum 2011, $6.99 at Bevmo in CA, "whole cone" DIPA

Very nice creamy head forms on a standard pour. Lacing is pretty impressive. The liquid is orange and extremely clear. Might mistake it for SNPA.

The aroma is unmistakably grapefruit with just a hint of caramel. On the tongue, it had some light caramel but it's all about the hops. They start with grapefruit and go heavy into grapefruit pith. Hop bitterness is intense but super smooth. Incredible how "not-harsh" it is. Lacks the juiciness of the best double IPAs. Finish is not bone dry, it has a little tiny bit of syrup that hangs around with the lingering bitterness. As it warms, the bitterness gains some solvent and harshness, making it less drinkable and less palatable. No vegetal notes. Very clean. For sure you can tell this is a big beer, with double IPA level hopping.

Overall:
I am extremely impressed. I would definitely have this again. Hopefully they can reign in the cost - probably it's because of the whole cone hops they used.

Pours a brilliant, glowing amber color with a small white foam head that recedes quickly. Leaves a little bit of lacing. Surprisingly murky.

Nose leads with floral notes and citrus, and lots of hops. Grapefruit and pine are noticeable.

Oy. This one punches you right in the face with the hops. Followed up by some light caramel malts. Light grassiness and floral notes. Pine resin. Grapefruit. Good deal of bitterness, and a bit of alcohol warmth.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied. A little dry. Slightly sticky, but still goes down pretty smooth for such a hoppy brew. Medium carbonation.

Overall, as implied by the name, this one is very hoppy. Surprisingly easy to drink. Strongly recommend this one.
