Notes/Commercial Description:
A group of hop-heads and publicans challenged our Beer Camp brewers to push the extremes of whole-cone hop brewing. The result is this: a 100 IBU, whole-cone hurricane of flavor. Simply put —Hoptimum: the biggest whole-cone IPA we have ever produced. Aggressively hopped, dry-hopped, AND torpedoed with our exclusive new hop varieties for ultra-intense flavors and aromas.

Resinous "new-school" and exclusive hop varieties carry the bold and aromatic nose. The flavor follows the aroma with layers of aggressive hoppiness, featuring notes of grapefruit rind, rose, lilac, cedar, and tropical fruit—all culminating in a dry and lasting finish.

Poured from a bottle into a Dogfish snifter

A- pours a dark orange with a two finger offwhite head. The orange is almost perfectly transparent. Man, looks phenomenal.

S- very perfumey hop aroma...flowery almost

T- slight bit of sweetness in the beginning, with a touch of bitterness at the end. Citrus mixed throughout. Slight alcohol burn.

M- pretty thick body...almost syrupy. Man, there's a lot here

O- pretty good DIPA from Sierra Nevada. Doesn't seem very balanced, though

In my chalice:

A: golden brown colored boy yielded a small white one finger head that lasted for a good fifteen seconds. Gentle flowing carbonation rose at a moderate pace. No lacing was left.

S: hops up front with a fruity yet malty background, however all were pretty powerful in the smell.

T: powerful combination of the hops, fruits and malts. There was the slight alcohol taste that came out.

M: medium with a decent level of carbonation. A slight creamy feel came out as the beer warmed.

O: this was a pretty good brew that I would happily welcome again despite the alcohol taste that came out a bit too strong.

Stubby 12oz bottle into a pub glass. The brew appears a clear copper color with some particulate stuck in suspension keeping the brew from being perfectly clear. A yellowish stained cap that is about a finger strong composed of large bubbles stays atop due to streaming carbonation maintaining a thin lace atop for quite a duration. As the cap fades, it leaves some strings of webby lacing effect sticking to the glass.

The aroma is a pretty intense wack of fresh hoppy goodness. The nose initially is fresh and fruity with a floral bouquet that rapidly changes into more of an herbal aspect that gets quite dank with some pine inclusion. As it warms up, it gets a little grassy which is just an extension of the previously mentioned dank aspect mixed with a touch of alcohol tingle to the nose.

The taste is absolutely resinous with hops but surprisingly the hops carry quite the punch of flavor without getting excessively bitter. The resinous bite includes flavors of herbs, pine, grass, rinds and pulp. A bit of grass inclusion mixes with some fusel alcohol and towards the back it gets more focused on herbs and a bit of catty touch. Despite the assault of enjoyable hop flavoring, underneath is a respectable amount of contrasting caramel malt flavoring that is a bit toasty which provides enough sweetness to keep things enjoyable and rounded.

This is a medium bodied brew with a modest level of carbonation. I regret waiting this long to partake in this brew. In some ways, this was minorly reminiscent of that most fantastic experience I had with Ghidora back when it was originally released as a beer camp brew. This is a pretty intense brew from tip to hilt. It is sure to satisfy the most profound hop craving.

tasted from a 12oz bottle

A: nice dark amber color, pretty much what you would expect from a solid dipa

S: has some nice citrus smells but also a very malty smell to it. Punctuated by a very strong whiff of alcohol, which is not surprising for a 10%er

T: I enjoyed the very grapefruit citrus balanced with a pretty yummy sweet malt. I'm a fan generally of over-hopped beers and a lot of beers in the dipa category get a little 'meaty' for me, but this kept a very hoppy presence from start to finish

M: full and yummy

O: I gave this a solid 4 and will def. try it again (3 more in the fridge) but would also purchase it a second time. Solid double that is very well balanced and manages to be very big at 10% but still maintain some great hop flavor

Presentation: 12 oz. bottle poured into my Sam Adams pint glass. Served nicely chilled straight from the refrigerator.

Appearance: Nice golden orange in color. Very clear and plenty of carbonation. Nice two finger white and creamy head. Pretty good retention.

Aroma: Lots of pine and whole cone hop notes. Some citrus from the hops too. Very nice. A pretty strong malt background contributes a bit of caramel sweetness.

Taste: Nice full pine and grapefruit upfront. Not overly bitter from the hops at all. There is a pretty substantial amount of sweetness from the alcohol and malt backing. A slight bitter ending. Very nice.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied and pretty creamy. The carbonation does well to keep this light.

Overall, a really nice double IPA. I would definitely get this again. Another solid offering from Sierra Nevada.
