Notes/Commercial Description:
A group of hop-heads and publicans challenged our Beer Camp brewers to push the extremes of whole-cone hop brewing. The result is this: a 100 IBU, whole-cone hurricane of flavor. Simply put —Hoptimum: the biggest whole-cone IPA we have ever produced. Aggressively hopped, dry-hopped, AND torpedoed with our exclusive new hop varieties for ultra-intense flavors and aromas.

Resinous "new-school" and exclusive hop varieties carry the bold and aromatic nose. The flavor follows the aroma with layers of aggressive hoppiness, featuring notes of grapefruit rind, rose, lilac, cedar, and tropical fruit—all culminating in a dry and lasting finish.

A - Between deep gold and amber, white head that has good retention and lacing.

S/T - Juicy hops up front, heavily resinous pine, backed up by a solid caramel, bready malt backbone. Finishes bitter with lasting pine and some sweetness coming through from the malt. The big abv stays well hidden, slightly noticeable.

M - Full body, slightly abrasive hops, medium carbonation. Finishes mostly dry.

O - The abv stays impressively well hidden. Everything else kind of strikes me as good for the style, nothing too impressive. Reminds me of a stronger, thicker Torpedo.

Appearance: Poured into clear Sierra Nevada mug that I bought along with the 4-pack. Extremely bright amber color shining through right away. Much lesser size head and less lacing then expected but in a way that still presents both as having very much quantity and presence. Sticky lacing remnants remain on the mug as it's drained, moreso than usual.

Smell: Smells very malty actually. Not as much like an IPA as I'd expect. Lots of citrus and floral scents being thrown into my face. Still smells strong though, can tell the ABV is up there even more than usual for an Imperial.

Taste: TASTES JUST LIKE IT SMELLS... DELICIOUS! Ok so first off, this does taste like a strong IPA. It really does. But there's something about it that gives it its own character that many other IPA's don't have. The initial tangyness when it's first absorbed on the tongue is so much stronger than expected. And man, that ABV is HITTIN'! I finished my first glass by the time I was done with the 'smells' section, and now at the end of the taste section, that ABV IS HITTIN'! Such a clean and clear-headed, slightly euphoric state of mind. This is no budweiser gutter bullshit.

Mouthfeel: Mouthfeel is ALL. THERE. You know the funniest thing about reviewing so many dank-ass-beers? It's that you run out of shit to say every once in a while. I'm trying to think of how many times in the past I've used words like "CREAMY", "FULFILLING", and "SMOOTH" when it comes to the aspects of both mouthfeel and drinkability... and I know the answer is stupid high to such a degree that I really have nothing more to say. So I'll just repeat every good word about mouthfeel I can think of in like 30 seconds for this: Malty, Stingery, Oranges, Mangos, Bears, Plainswalker, Scimitars, Colonial, Renaissance, Caramel, Pseudoperfect, Fuck yes.

Overall: Overall it's just what I expected from Sierra Nevada in the Imperial IPA world. It's as fine-crafted as those bastards have the money to make, and it also comes with a sense of uniqueness and enjoyment that so many other brews still can't rock a 5.0 with. I don't know if its the best imperial ipa i've ever had but it ranks up there easily. At 10.4% ABV, it is well worth your money (for the 4-pack) and well worth your time (for the any-occasion). A Golf clap and a Bow to Sierra Nevada for the millionth time in my beer-drinking career.

Pours a beautiful copper color with a nice solid head - creamy to start and really good lacing. Smell gives a hop aroma but is slightly more dulled than others in this style; strong sweet smell, possibly candy, is present. Flavor is piney hop but quickly enhanced with a sweet caramel malt. Hop lingers with spice. Well done.

Pours a clear, copper color. 1/4 inch head of a white color. Slight retention and slight lacing. Smells of strong floral hops, hop oils, slight alcohol, slight sweet malt, hint of pine. Fits the style of an American Double/Imperial IPA. Mouth feel is smooth and clean, with an average carbonation level. There is also a noticeable and expected bitterness. Tastes of strong floral hops, alcohol, hops oils, slight sweet malt, and hint of citrus hops. Overall, surprisingly weak appearance, but refreshing aroma, good feel, and good blend.

12oz bottle into a snifter

A: Pours a clear dark golden yellow with a nice white head that fades to a ring and leaves some nice lacing on the glass.

S: The nose is mainly piney hops and caramel malt. There are some tropical fruits in there as well but I didn't think it smelled that impressive.

T: The taste was not what I was expecting after the nose. At first it blasts you with a ton of pine and grapefruit rind...it's incredibly bitter. After a few more sips your palate gets used to the bitter and you can detect a ton of tropical fruit, pine, and caramel malt flavors.

M: The feel is medium bodied and creamy.

O: This is about as tasty as I expected and something I could drink occasionally. The nose was the only disappointment but the taste made up for it.

I am a huge fan of SN. I still think their pale ale is the best of it's style, and it costs less than Corona! Their collaborations with Anchor were outstanding (particularly the stout). The only thing missing from this brewery was a few more "big beers" (besides Bigfoot, which I love). This one was exactly what was missing. So far, this is the best replacement for Hopslam (which comes and goes fast, and is overpriced - IMO) that I've found. I can't count Pliney the Elder, which is sublime - but I can't get it in Florida. This beer is certainly balanced towards the hoppy side, but not many double IPA's aren't. I also like Double Simco, Hercules, and the anniversary Ruination, but this is my current #1 double IPA. Keep 'em coming, SN!

12 ounce standard bottle poured into a Samuel Adams perfect pint glass.

Appearance- deep gold in color, pretty clear. Medium head, about half an inch with not much lacing.

Smell- hoppy, which was expected with some fruity notes (slight banana aroma?) also very piney, which was nice to smell.

Taste- piney and bitter with a hint of unexpected fruitiness. Warming alcohol flavor, but definitely not ovewhelming.

Mouthfeel- lingering bitterness, somewhat thick but overall enjoyable
