Notes/Commercial Description:
A group of hop-heads and publicans challenged our Beer Camp brewers to push the extremes of whole-cone hop brewing. The result is this: a 100 IBU, whole-cone hurricane of flavor. Simply put —Hoptimum: the biggest whole-cone IPA we have ever produced. Aggressively hopped, dry-hopped, AND torpedoed with our exclusive new hop varieties for ultra-intense flavors and aromas.

Resinous "new-school" and exclusive hop varieties carry the bold and aromatic nose. The flavor follows the aroma with layers of aggressive hoppiness, featuring notes of grapefruit rind, rose, lilac, cedar, and tropical fruit—all culminating in a dry and lasting finish.

Bottle into Tulip (2013, no exact date found)

Appearance- Deep gold, fairly clear, 1 finger of head that dissipates quickly. nice lacing.

Aroma- Nice hops, very piney, some citrus, grapefruit, earthy, pungent, slight malt in the background.

Flavor- This is very bitter at 100 IBUs, lots of pine, earthy hops, spicy, slight citrus, very clean, alcohol present but I probably wouldn't guess 10%. very nice.

Mouthfeel- Medium full bodied, medium carbination, alcohol warmth

Overall-This is a great hop bomb, leans toward pine, and earthy hops rather than citrus, very enjoyable. A sipper for sure. This is my first time trying it and I will be getting more for sure.

In the same way that SN's Torpedo is a step up from their Pale Ale, Hoptimum is a step up from Torpedo. Somehow they've managed to maintain the characteristic IPA bitterness while taking the edge off the sharpness in the mouthfeel, creating an experience so smooth and flavorful that this beer can truly be savored. The high ABV makes one bottle enough for me. Only downsides would have to be availability and price - I don't find Hoptimum very often and when I do, a four pack is more expensive than a six pack of the Torpedo - that's the only thing that keeps me from buying and drinking this more frequently.

2013 Batch

A: ~2" off-white head, short retention. Excellent lacing. Soft carbonation. Ever-so-slightly cloudy amber colour.

S: Very slight alcohol smell initially, large citrus and floral notes (I get large amounts of orange peel and some pine).

T: Orange right at the front of the mouth, morphs quickly into a burst of hoppy bitterness that lingers. Returns with heavier spice notes and grapefruit after a short while with a soft background bitterness. Not the most balanced IPA but still very tasty.

M: Medium bodied. Smooth on the palate with some amount of carbonation detectable on the back of the tongue. Very easy-drinking beer.

O: An excellent IIPA with almost no alcohol detectable (for a 10%+ beer). Bitterness could be a bit much for the uninitiated or the people who aren't big hop fans, a great beer and a must-try for any hophead!

12 oz. bottle poured into a snifter

Pours a deep, glowing orange-gold with one finger of dense off-white head. Maintains a thin cap with plenty of sticky, oily lacing. Gorgeous. The nose makes no attempt to disguise the impending assault on your palate. Not a strong aroma per se, but certainly a very serious one. Intense, sharp grassy pine surrounded by a mixture of citrus peel, toasted malts, and a strong grain alcohol-like presence.

The taste delivers on the promised intensity. Bitterness of concentrated pine resin, dank grassiness, slightly juicy citrus, and some floral notes. Malts come through as vaguely caramel-like at first, then bring a burnt grain character. Finishes very dry with a lingering piney bitterness and noticeable alcohol heat. Medium-bodied with fairly lively carbonation and a full, sticky texture that's quite impressive, given the dry finish.

This is a unique DIPA that took me a while to wrap my head around. I drank a bottle on 3 consecutive days before I could really decide how much I liked it. It's a big, strong brew designed with true hopheads in mind. Admittedly, I prefer my DIPA's with a bit more tropical fruit and citrus, but I can see how some would go nuts for this one.

I'm so glad I stopped by this random liquor store by my apartment to check their beers out. I could not believe that they had the Hoptimum in stock! I'm probably gonna buy some more if they still have some for sale. It's one of the best Imperial IPAs I have ever had. I think Pliny is still at the top, then Sucks, then Hoptimum, then Enjoy By(4.01.2013). That's how good this beer is! My bottle is probably fresh too!

The taste had a very strong hop bitterness, which I love so much! I think they used more hops on this one than a lot of beers out there(minus the triple IPAs). It's a very pleasant hop taste.

It was kindy pricey though. I paid like $11 for a four pack. Oh well, it's so worth it!
Would definitely buy again.

Enjoyed over an easy half-hour after pour into an IPA glass--thanks, MNishCT77, for the education!
The color is golden orange with a creamy off-white top, side-supported by a fair stack of bubbles. Retention isn't long, but thin lumps of lacing remain for a while.
The nose is grassy and sweet; grapefruits and a peach nestle in a bed of pine nettles. Somewhat dank (increased with standing) and dipped in resin, but still bright with a kiss of floral wine.
Very hop forward flavor, with those oils carrying lots of pine and citrus past the teeth. The lack of acids and carbonation leave the experience of taste rather one-dimensional. There's a late cheesy funk one would expect, too, but the grains are obscured. Even the high ethanol content is muted by the Humulus heft.
It's a weighty syrup in the mouth, even down the throat and into the belly. Carbonation seems to have been purposely kept low to just show off those cones, but I think it needs more bubbles.
This brew is truly a slick hop-juice. It's useful to demonstrate what's possible with that herbal component. When it comes to a total composition, though, I'd liken it more to an etude than to a finished song.

Yellowish amber, slight head and lacing, and transparent. Very citrusy smell. I wasn't expecting the taste to be so refreshing and tangy. A nice departure from other dipas I've had. Alcohol, at about 10%, is well hidden. Great carbonation and medium body. I wish they sold this in 6 packs instead of the bomber, because I would drink more than two glasses. Although the price at 9.99 a bomber is a little hard to overcome. I love my Mi dipa's and this is the first non midwest dipa that I really enjoyed.

Edit 5/17/12- Having this a 3rd time now and I can clearly say that this is one of the best DIPA's I've ever had.
