Notes & Commercial Description:

A group of hop-heads and publicans challenged our Beer Camp brewers to push the extremes of whole-cone hop brewing. The result is this: a 100 IBU, whole-cone hurricane of flavor. Simply put —Hoptimum: the biggest whole-cone IPA we have ever produced. Aggressively hopped, dry-hopped, AND torpedoed with our exclusive new hop varieties for ultra-intense flavors and aromas.

Resinous "new-school" and exclusive hop varieties carry the bold and aromatic nose. The flavor follows the aroma with layers of aggressive hoppiness, featuring notes of grapefruit rind, rose, lilac, cedar, and tropical fruit—all culminating in a dry and lasting finish.

My brother and I bought a 4 pack from the near by gas station. I love IPA's and I had never had it before, so I had to try it. We drank straight from the bottles so I can't really describe the head or the lace. I fell in love with this beauty at first drink. This beer isn't just hoppy, it's insanely hoppy, and packs one hell of a punch at 10.4%! One of the best tasting beers I've ever had. It's like an IPA lovers equivalent of meeting Jesus. If you haven't tried Hoptimum, you're robbing your palate of an amazing experience! Thank you, Sierra Nevada!!

Got a 12 oz bottle poured into a tulip glass.

Appearance: Pours a lovely golden-amber color with a 1.5in head. Head slowly dissipates and leaves some intricate lacing along the side of the glass, although I would have liked the head to have lasted a bit longer. Certainly looks great though.

Smell: Smells a bit of peppery alcohol, pine, and citrus. Grapefruit comes to mind especially on this. The combination of all the smells works really nicely, and it definitely makes me come back for more.

Taste: Taste is a wonderful interplay between sweet and bitter notes from the hops, although the hops definitely dominate here. Each sip seems to start out a bit hoppy, then has a warming malt note. The mouthwatering finish seems to work with the balance of sweet citrus and the bitterness from the hops which hangs around for a while. Alcohol is hidden pretty well for a 10.4% ABV.

Mouthfeel: This brew's definitely full-bodied but smooth. Carbonation is spot-on and is neither too much or too little. Not too much spectacular either.

Overall: Hoptimum is a great, well-balanced example of DIPA. I'd definitely go back to this one. Also, I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a hoppy, bitter beer with some serious character. Really wish I had more than one of these gems.

Slightly hazy orange-amber color. Fairly minimal, off-white head. Lots of nice, little bubbles coming up. Smell is a really nice mix of peppery alcohol, caramel malt and citrusy, piney hops! Tangerine, apricot, jelly bean aroma. Taste is more hop-forward, with malt in the middle and a nicely balanced finish that is both a little bitter and sweet. More citrus flavors - grapefruit, etc. Hides the alcohol quite well. Mouthfeel is smooth. Pretty dry, mouthwatering finish. This is a pretty awesome beer. I wish I had more.

bottled 3/28/13. Drank on 5/12/13, so not at it freshest.
poured into snifter.

A: Pours a nice, bright golden orange. About a finger of head that fades into a nice ring around the glass. Not much lacing.

S: awesome. hoppy. floral, citrus, grapefruit, tropical fruit.

T: taste follows the nose. This is one delicious brew if you like heavily hopped beers without much malt balance (which i do enjoy) Lots of grapefruit, citrus, piney, flavor that lingers. Alcohol is very well masked.

M: good mouthfeel. Nice carbonation. Flavor lingers on the touch and in the mouth for awhile.

O: this is a great beer! I bought a single and will probably be going back for a 4 pack.

Beautiful, bright amber color; very high clarity. Thin head that very quickly dissipates to almost nothing. Light effervescing.

Strong mix of hops and malt; bready and bitter. Lots of nice florals with, heavy pine, orange and grapefruit.

Thick creamy mouthfeel, full bodied. Mild carbonation keeps it feeling crisp and fresh.

Hops, hops, hops and more hops, with some hoppy hops on top of it all. This is not a hop-bomb, it's a hop-nuke. Intense up front, and lingering in your palate for minutes after your last sip. The malt and citrus give a nice backdrop to the dance of the hops on your tongue and the hefty 10% ABV barely comes through... well, in your mouth anyway. It'll sure come through for your central nervous system. Again, this is what an Imperial IPA should be. It makes you wonder why the hell you've been drinking other IPAs when weapons of mass hoppiness like this existed.

Sierra has done it again; this brewery just keeps cranking out winners. After so many IPAs claiming their beer is the hoppiest or that they have the newest revolutionary way of getting the most hoppage out of their beer, it is refreshing to finally have a beer that comes through. It truly is Hoptimum. I am truly pleased with this beer, 100% worth the price. If you are even a mild fan of IPAs, you need to check this brew out. Bravo, Sierra Nevada.

A - Light amber with a thin white head that didn't last long. Crystal clear with a little bit of sediment floating around.

S - Fresh hops, citrus, and flowers.

T - Amazing citrusy hop bomb that fades into sweet malts and a little bit of booze. Really, really, really well balanced imperial. Amazing hops without being overly bitter. Pretty much what I want in an imperial.

M - A little resinous with the hops. Nice carbonation keeps this beer tasting fresh to the bottom of the glass.

O - Super great Imperial from a company that truly knows hops.

12 oz bottle shared with my girlfriend, tulip and snifter.

A - not too much to this one. Head recedes in the middle nicely, sticking to the sides on its way down. Coppery, orange, not too much to say.

S - delicious. Lots of hop character, sharp but sweet. I love the way this beer smells.

T - also good. Bitterer than expected, but still sweet enough to not overwhelm. I actually like bitter DIPAs, so this one tastes especially good to me. The alcohol is a little strong, however.

M - good, the bitterness sticks around in the mouth, leaving a small syrupy feel. Not unpleasant.

O - I like it. It's somewhat expensive 'round these parts, but I wouldn't turn this down given a second chance.
