Notes/Commercial Description:
A group of hop-heads and publicans challenged our Beer Camp brewers to push the extremes of whole-cone hop brewing. The result is this: a 100 IBU, whole-cone hurricane of flavor. Simply put —Hoptimum: the biggest whole-cone IPA we have ever produced. Aggressively hopped, dry-hopped, AND torpedoed with our exclusive new hop varieties for ultra-intense flavors and aromas.

Resinous "new-school" and exclusive hop varieties carry the bold and aromatic nose. The flavor follows the aroma with layers of aggressive hoppiness, featuring notes of grapefruit rind, rose, lilac, cedar, and tropical fruit—all culminating in a dry and lasting finish.

Had from a 12oz bottle.

For such a large beer, the color is a little light for a DIPA- but pleasantly so.

On the nose, subtle pineapple and tropical fruit. It wasn't dramatic and dare I say, slightly muted?

The taste: Smooth, a little thin, but well balanced. Some DIPA's are lopsided (too much hops, not enough malt) and come off disjointed. Hoptimum is not overly bitter or overly sweet--if you ask me this is what makes this beer worth checking out. One reviewer commented on the subtle fruit flavor this beer has in the finish, but couldn't pick it out. It is delicate, and what I would describe as "peach-pit" (its got a definite stone fruit flavor, but not really the fruit --more the pit of a peach than anything). The hops & malt balance work to bring out this flavor in a cool way!

Integration and balance are what makes this beer a winner....

Only wish it had a little more going on flavor wise.

Overall: B+/A-

This was a single 12oz. bottle I found at Ye Old Spirits in Frederick, MD.

Look: The beer was clear and had a brilliant orangeish copper color. Not much head to speak off, although a nice film did hang around to form some respectable lacing. Carbonation level was medium.

Smell: A pungent pine with some grapefruit hiding in the background. Basically a hop bomb!

Taste: First was an harsh bitterness blended with straight ethanol. A chemical burn came through when swallowing. The palate could almost remind someone of drinking turpentine, maybe?

Ok I admit - I was not ready for this beer. I often gravitate towards balanced Imperial IPA's, so this one caught be a little off guard. Definitely have some cheddar or provolone available to cut the extreme abrasiveness of this beer if you ever have the pleaser of drinking it.

A: Light copper hue with a two-inch steady head and great lacing; light carbonation

S: Strong tropical hop aroma coupled with weed and pine--lots of weed aroma actually; though there is a sweet bready aroma, the booze shines through the most in the finish

T: The bitter tropical hops play well off the sweet boozy, bready malts; this is a big IPA but it's tasty

F: Sticky and oily; a near perfect mouth feel for an IPA

O: This is a great DIPA; so glad it's more available this year

A - copper and clear with 2 finger head. Large bubbled head and only moderate retention. Plenty of lacing and moderate carbonation.

S - combination of citrus and pine hops. Nothing wonderful but pleasant.

T - its a hoptimum all right. Well crafted for the hop head though. Plenty of bold and complex flavor to balance a noticeable yet tolerable explosion of hop bitterness. Probably a little too bitter for my palate but still I can tell its a well made beer.

Mouthffeel - very buttery and smooth. Definitely a high ABV beer.

Overall - I think SN's other hopcentric beers like Torpedo and Celebration are better crafted and a more tolerable drinker. This one is quite heavy and bolder but still a good beer for the imperial style.

Poured into Bruery snifter. Pours gold with nice clarity. Small amount of white head forms upon pour, dissipates quickly. Nice amount of lacing left behind. The nose features ripe fresh wet hops with a ton of pine and resin. Notes of caramel and malt come through towards the end. Everything seems to be in nice balance considering it's a 10.4% DIPA. The taste starts off with sweet malts and heavy hop bitterness Bread and caramel are present on the finish, moderate bitterness on the end as well. The mouthfeel is somewhat heavy with moderate carbonation. Overall, this is another great hoppy offering from Sierra Nevada. It offers a great value and lots of flavor.

Aroma: Nice bold dose of American hops, ruby red grapefruit, resinous and grassy. Not much pine. Mild alcohol. Sweet crisp pale malts. Smells similar to Bell's Hopslam (that's definitely a good thing!).

Appearance: High clarity, gold in color. Lots of bubbles rising steadily to the top of the glass. Head is white and medium height. Good retention, leaves a thin layer of creamy foam.

Taste: Huge, nearly harsh floral resinous hops. A good bit of pine. Bitter grapefruit. Some sweet malt, but not much sweet citrus. While still cold, some moderate caramel and orange citrus sweetness is present.

Mouthfeel: Light body. Mild to moderate carbonation. Finishes slightly dry. Slight warming.

Overall: So bold, best served very cold. Lots of pine, much more bitter than sweet.

Another great hoppy beer from Sierra Nevada. Pours a clear coppery/orange color with a big white head and thick lacing. Head retention is good for a 10% plus beer.

Aroma is very good, citrus hops and some piney hops.

Taste is outstanding, citrus hops (grapefruit and tropical fruit), piney hops and sweet malts for balance. Balance here is BIG hops smoothed out with some sweet caramel malts. The 10.4% alcohol is totally masked. Could be drinking a Celebration or Torpedo as far as alcohol taste is concerned.

Mouthfeel is crisp and rich. The bitterness is just right for a big American DIPA. No alcohol burn. Balance between bitterness and sweet malts is just right.

An outstanding DIPA.

Sierra Nevada continues to impress me with the quality of the bers they produce at the price point at which they sell. Hoptimum delivers a beer full with hop flavor on par with the far more expensive and harder find beers such as Bell's Hopsland and The Oracle and as enjoyable as the hopheads Holy Grail DFH 120.

My girlfriend described Hoptimum as hops on steroids. Great beer and can't beat the quality at this price. Would have a greater aura if it was more expensive or harder to find, but for me it was all about the beer.

a clear orange/amber pour with 2 fingers of fluffy off-white head, great lacing. smells of honey, grass, pine, maple, grapefruit. a very hop heavy initial sweet taste followed by an earthly bitterness. grapefruit, dirt, pine, honey. medium bodied but heavy. creamy on the roof but nicely carbonated and sweet on the palate. a great sipper.

a bit bitter even out by malt nicely. mainly a hop bomb, though it has it's flavorful sweetness of honey-caramel... with a name like hoptimum, what else could i expect?
