Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: kaseydad on 02-07-2010

A group of hop-heads and publicans challenged our Beer Camp brewers to push the extremes of whole-cone hop brewing. The result is this: a 100 IBU, whole-cone hurricane of flavor. Simply put —Hoptimum: the biggest whole-cone IPA we have ever produced. Aggressively hopped, dry-hopped, AND torpedoed with our exclusive new hop varieties for ultra-intense flavors and aromas.

Resinous "new-school" and exclusive hop varieties carry the bold and aromatic nose. The flavor follows the aroma with layers of aggressive hoppiness, featuring notes of grapefruit rind, rose, lilac, cedar, and tropical fruit—all culminating in a dry and lasting finish.

Appearance: Just the slightest bit of hazy in a dull orange color with two fingers of head that fades to a thin cap with little lacing.

Aroma: Piney, resinous hops, ripe fruit and a little booze in the background. Also hints of fresh-cut flowers.

Taste: Thick and sticky sweet up front, then BOOM! the hop explosion hits. It's so bitter, your taste buds are completely overwhelmed so missive, raw bitterness is all you really get. Finish is actually fairly fast and only mildly lingering.

The Rest: Well, SN has succeeded in their goal of making the ultimate whole-hop experience. but was it worthwhile? I'd say yes, but just. This is a big imperial that is almost ridiculous in its bitterness, but still drinkable. I'm going to cellar two from my 4-pack and see how they mellow out next summer.

A quick review from notes.

Poured gently into a tulip glass and shows very good carbonation and lacing. Has a more earthy hop aroma as opposed to a piney or citrusy smell. Taste is out of this world with a nice malty carmel flavor. The hops are strong as expected but are very well rounded out.

12oz bottle into a tulip glass.

A - Pours a clear gold/amber color with a beatiful, large, snow-white, and rocky head which leaves an excellent lacing on the glass. 4.5/5

S - A lot of aromatic hop dominating some toasted malt. A bit disappointing in terms of complexity... 3.5/5

T - Sugar is well present up front with notes of toasted malt. Then hop shows up with a lot of flavors and ends with a slightly hash/astringing feeling. Alcohol adds some spiciness to it. 4.5/5

MF - Medium body with a good carbonation. Bitterness is quite hash at the finish but kept reasonable. Feeling could be slightly smoother. 4/5

O - The excellent mix of flavors lingers and makes this beer a solid Imperial IPA. Only the aroma is a bit disappointing. If you're a hop lover, seek it out, it won't disappoint you! 4/5

Poured very hard into a perfect pint glass. 3-4 finger fluffy, frothy white head lingers and leaves decent lacing as cling. Beautiful crisp translucent copper amber coloring. Smell is resinous, sweet but spicy, piney citrus hops. Taste follows the nose, but grapefruit is more pronounced, with some malt in there as well. Sweet/maybe honey? Quintessential SN spice involved. Finish is dry but smooth. Maybe a bit flat, but that could be down to a number of variables (heat, age of the beer, etc.). No matter, really enjoy this beer quite a bit. Hides alcohol really well, until you stand up and walk around. Very much recommend.
