Notes/Commercial Description:
A group of hop-heads and publicans challenged our Beer Camp brewers to push the extremes of whole-cone hop brewing. The result is this: a 100 IBU, whole-cone hurricane of flavor. Simply put —Hoptimum: the biggest whole-cone IPA we have ever produced. Aggressively hopped, dry-hopped, AND torpedoed with our exclusive new hop varieties for ultra-intense flavors and aromas.

Resinous "new-school" and exclusive hop varieties carry the bold and aromatic nose. The flavor follows the aroma with layers of aggressive hoppiness, featuring notes of grapefruit rind, rose, lilac, cedar, and tropical fruit—all culminating in a dry and lasting finish.

2012 Edition

A: Pours a clear golden orange in color. The beer has a finger tall light beige head that reduces to an extremely thin film covering the entire surface of the beer, a thick patch, and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate to significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: The aroma is a wonderful bouquet of hops - strong floral, grapefruit, and citrus along with lighter amounts of pine.

T: There is some upfront caramel malt sweetness but that is quickly dominated by the hops flavors. The primary hop flavor is the grapefruit but that is supported by floral and light pine flavors. There is some moderate bitterness in this beer but it is not overly aggressive.

M: On the fuller side of medium bodied with moderate to heavy amounts of carbonation. Crisp.

O: For as big a beer as this is from a flavor and ABV perspective, this beer is quite easy to drink. I'm really enjoying sipping on this one while watching the Euros. Easier to drink than I expected with the hoppy flavors/aromas and bitterness because it is not overly agressive.

Pours a copper-amber-gold. There's a gorgeous hue to this beast. I observed a half- inch bone white head. Delicate and intense lacing touches up the glass in a beautiful way. The grapefruits and grassy aromas are dominant here with an explosion of fruitiness lurking underneath. The taste is incredible for my first impression. Hoptimum shows it's complexity from the gate with a certain hoppy bite that I haven't experienced before. A blast of flavor from the good variety of hops used. It's bitter but not overdone. Solid, I say. It is not too heavy of a double IPA and the fact that it was put together neatly allows you to enjoy a few of these without tasting the ABV too much. You can't hide from the 10.4% though. A killer brew that I will grab more 4 packs of when I see them. The Bigfoot of IPAs.

What a pleasant surprise by SN. This is among the top DIPAs out there. Had this on tap at Vinology in Ann Arbor a few times now. Pours a beautiful clear dark amber color and perfect white froth on top with plenty of lacing. Smells of pine and grapefruit, some caramel and toffee, and then a bunch more grapefruit. Tastes of bitter hops with grapefuit candy on the back end. Really like drinking grapefruit candies here with some slight booze. But, alcohol is barely detectable at the 10+ percent. Fantastic!

Pours a hazy amber hue which leaves a two finger creamy dimple laden head and clingy lacing everywhere, the smell is honey, piney resinous hops and lots of them along with butterscotch and marzipan, the mouthfeel is full bodied and resinous which leaves your lips a tad sticky and as can be expected the taste is all about the hops while still feeling quite balanced with hints of piney bitter hops, sticky honey, toffee treacle, grapefruit, marmalade, raspberry lollies and finished with a dry herbal bitterness but suprisingly for a hop beast of this calibre it really isnt the bitter tastebud destroyer i was expecting it really is nicely balanced and thats a good thing as its easy to hop the hell out of a brew but to make it really quaffable at its high ABV is another thing and SN definately nailed this, one of the better DIPA's going around.

Enjoyed this at BC's pizza in Clovis ca

Pours a nice orange with a hue of amber at times white foamy head with good lacing

Smell is very inviting floral citrus bouquet hint of spice and pine hops

Taste of sweet citrus with a rush of piney hops

Very drink able because the hops blend in great and there is hardly a sense of a 10% abv nice carbonation

Over all a sensational brew that has a refined appeal that other DIPAs are missing, "I'll have another!"

Hugely aromatic, flowery, every hop descriptor you can think of. Yet it's not obscenely bitter in the southern California tradition. A bright, warm note followed by the fruity, malty richness.

Handsome orange amber, on the lighter shade. Attractive foam and carbonation. A touch of honey, lime and orange peel. Spicy with that eye-opening flavor. Crisp and sharp, with the mellow, rich base. As with every SN beer, it's well made and technically perfect.

The grapefruit flavors and the bitterness of citrus rind comes through loud and clear. But the overall fruity and warm character makes it quite, uh, sippable. More than a mouthful would be wasted. This must be one of the best strong DIPAs around. It's so hot, you might think it's some kind of crazy hopped-up gin.

From the 12 oz bottle.

Pours a lovely amber color with a foamy, thick head that leaves a very sticky lacing on the glass in it's wake.
The smell is definitely hops, with strong resinous pine and citrus and a little sweetness on the nose.
The taste is phenomenal... Bitter and strong, but very well balanced. Some caramel sweetness from the malts goes brilliantly with the citrus and pine taste from the hops.
Definitely a sipper at 10.4abv... But this becomes even more complex as it warms.
Sierra Nevada did an excellent job since this is very well balanced given the alcohol and the ibu's.
Will enjoy this each year its available!
