Notes & Commercial Description:

A group of hop-heads and publicans challenged our Beer Camp brewers to push the extremes of whole-cone hop brewing. The result is this: a 100 IBU, whole-cone hurricane of flavor. Simply put —Hoptimum: the biggest whole-cone IPA we have ever produced. Aggressively hopped, dry-hopped, AND torpedoed with our exclusive new hop varieties for ultra-intense flavors and aromas.

Resinous "new-school" and exclusive hop varieties carry the bold and aromatic nose. The flavor follows the aroma with layers of aggressive hoppiness, featuring notes of grapefruit rind, rose, lilac, cedar, and tropical fruit—all culminating in a dry and lasting finish.

2012 batch in a 12 oz bottle.

A- This is a good looking beer, deep orange gold, slightly hazy. Two finger foamy head with decent retention reducing to a thin cap that continues to coat the glass.

S- Difficult to pull out anything other than citrusy hops. After a swirl the malt comes through along with some significant alcohol.

T- Big sweet carmel malt up front immediately followed by a tart hop blast that lingers through the finish. I didn't expect this much sweetness but it is balanced nicely and not syrupy or cloying. Plenty of hops but not too oily.

M- Smooth and rich, full bodied with excellent carbonation.

O- Wish they made this year round but now I have something to look forward too after Big Foot has run its course.

A - A beautiful golden hue with a 2 finger, cream head

S - Smell is tropical with notes of pineapple and guava, citrus and some alcohol.

T - Wow! Starts out incredibly creamy, then you get punched in the mouth with hops. Extremely bitter finish that lingers on the palate. Incredible!

M - Medium body and medium carbonation that perfectly accentuates the beer.

O - If I have enjoyed a beer more, I don't remember when. This bad boy is a must have. Just might be in the top 3 beers ever!

A - Bright reddish orange amber in body, one finger of densely packed head with sloppy streaks of lacing.

S - Clean west coast hop aroma, pine and grapefruit.

T - Bl**dy hell, that's a atomic blast of hop bitterness to just about strip the enamel of your teeth. Some ripe orange sweetness but just battered by bitter peel and apricot. I lose some of the flavour in the intense bitterness.

M - Medium body, moderate carbonation, tongue lashing bitterness.

O - I like my IPAs, and DIPAs but I have a limit where the IBUs start to lessen my enjoyment of the beer. Definately one for the hopheads.

A: Clear, copper color, filtered, small head, slow moving bubbles.

S: Familiar balance of grapefruit hops and some malt sweetness. Not overpowering. Nothing suprising or exceptional yet.

T: Very, very bitter, grapefruity, alcohol warmth at the end. Some light caramel/toffee sweetness in the back. Nice hop character, but not very interesting. A very bitter DIPA, and not very balanced... not that it should be balanced, but I'd prefer some more flavor to balance the bitterness. Alcohol playing more of a part as this warms.

M: Medium mouthfeel. Not very carbonated.

O: This beer... is actually less than the sum of its parts. It is not bad, but it's a fairly standard DIPA with a lot of hop bitterness, a lot of alcohol, and not actually a ton of flavor. I like my DIPAs too, but not a huge fan of this one.

12oz. bottle poured into a snifter

A- a translucent orange/amber with a half finger of off white head that dissipates fairly quickly

S- a bready/biscuity malt is mixed in with a very SN hop profile. Reminds me of Torpedo a bit, with some Grapefruit, citrus, and an earthy pine element.

T- some boozyness leads into the slight biscuity/caramel malt note which is quickly dominated by big piney/grapefruit notes. A pronounced bitterness ends the sip. The bitterness dries

M- a solid medium mouthfeel, maybe slightly heavy for the style. The bitterness on the end dries the mouth out fairly significantly.

O- Certainly unapologetic in its west-coastness, you certainly need to enjoy big, grapefruity, piney, bitter DIPA's to enjoy this. I think it's good, but doesn't rise to the level of the Hopslams and Stoudt's Double IPA's of the world.

2012 Edition

A: Pours a clear golden orange in color. The beer has a finger tall light beige head that reduces to an extremely thin film covering the entire surface of the beer, a thick patch, and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate to significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: The aroma is a wonderful bouquet of hops - strong floral, grapefruit, and citrus along with lighter amounts of pine.

T: There is some upfront caramel malt sweetness but that is quickly dominated by the hops flavors. The primary hop flavor is the grapefruit but that is supported by floral and light pine flavors. There is some moderate bitterness in this beer but it is not overly aggressive.

M: On the fuller side of medium bodied with moderate to heavy amounts of carbonation. Crisp.

O: For as big a beer as this is from a flavor and ABV perspective, this beer is quite easy to drink. I'm really enjoying sipping on this one while watching the Euros. Easier to drink than I expected with the hoppy flavors/aromas and bitterness because it is not overly agressive.

Pours a copper-amber-gold. There's a gorgeous hue to this beast. I observed a half- inch bone white head. Delicate and intense lacing touches up the glass in a beautiful way. The grapefruits and grassy aromas are dominant here with an explosion of fruitiness lurking underneath. The taste is incredible for my first impression. Hoptimum shows it's complexity from the gate with a certain hoppy bite that I haven't experienced before. A blast of flavor from the good variety of hops used. It's bitter but not overdone. Solid, I say. It is not too heavy of a double IPA and the fact that it was put together neatly allows you to enjoy a few of these without tasting the ABV too much. You can't hide from the 10.4% though. A killer brew that I will grab more 4 packs of when I see them. The Bigfoot of IPAs.

What a pleasant surprise by SN. This is among the top DIPAs out there. Had this on tap at Vinology in Ann Arbor a few times now. Pours a beautiful clear dark amber color and perfect white froth on top with plenty of lacing. Smells of pine and grapefruit, some caramel and toffee, and then a bunch more grapefruit. Tastes of bitter hops with grapefuit candy on the back end. Really like drinking grapefruit candies here with some slight booze. But, alcohol is barely detectable at the 10+ percent. Fantastic!
