Notes/Commercial Description:
A group of hop-heads and publicans challenged our Beer Camp brewers to push the extremes of whole-cone hop brewing. The result is this: a 100 IBU, whole-cone hurricane of flavor. Simply put —Hoptimum: the biggest whole-cone IPA we have ever produced. Aggressively hopped, dry-hopped, AND torpedoed with our exclusive new hop varieties for ultra-intense flavors and aromas.

Resinous "new-school" and exclusive hop varieties carry the bold and aromatic nose. The flavor follows the aroma with layers of aggressive hoppiness, featuring notes of grapefruit rind, rose, lilac, cedar, and tropical fruit—all culminating in a dry and lasting finish.

Presentation: 12 oz. bottle poured into my Sam Adams pint glass. Served nicely chilled straight from the refrigerator.

Appearance: Nice golden orange in color. Very clear and plenty of carbonation. Nice two finger white and creamy head. Pretty good retention.

Aroma: Lots of pine and whole cone hop notes. Some citrus from the hops too. Very nice. A pretty strong malt background contributes a bit of caramel sweetness.

Taste: Nice full pine and grapefruit upfront. Not overly bitter from the hops at all. There is a pretty substantial amount of sweetness from the alcohol and malt backing. A slight bitter ending. Very nice.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied and pretty creamy. The carbonation does well to keep this light.

Overall, a really nice double IPA. I would definitely get this again. Another solid offering from Sierra Nevada.

Pours a clear dark gold with a big persistent rocky head. Stays the whole way down the glass. Smell is big citrusy hops. Lemons, grapefruit, some pine. Great hop flavors in this beer. Again lots of bitter grapefruit. Also some apricot. Sweet lemons. Nice sweet malt backbone. At first this has a great peppery hop bite followed by a mellow sweetness and then a pleasant and intense lingering bitterness. Nice full bodied mouthfeel. Dangerously drinkable. Overall a really great double IPA. I expected this to be very good and it exceeded expectations.

A very clear amber color with a big white head and plenty of lacing. The aroma brings a crisp citrus with a mild woodsy wheat grain balance. Very nice. The flavor is an intense citrus with lots of syrupy grain and alcohol edges. This is a near full bodied, somewhat cloying. I get a fair amount of alcohol too. Quite sweet and not a real session beer. I like it but it seems a bit one dimesional and a bit less drinkable than I would like, even for a DIPA.

I have had the pleasure of enjoying the Hoptimum two different ways. Last year (the first year of distribution) at Novare Res in Portland, ME they had it on tap--I had vaguely heard about the release of the beer through the artist, Nate Duval, who designed the label. Had to try it, was served really cold in a balloon glass, and it was amazing. I wish I could have sat there all night and drank two of them. But at nearly 10% abv, one is definitely enough before your mouth gets a little chewy--like most IPA's. Needless to say, I wanted to find the big bottle of Hoptimum the next day but couldn't find it anywhere. Then came this year with the new release of the 12 oz 4 packs. I picked up a couple packs and took my time getting to each one. The beer in the bottle was good--but it wasn't nearly as good as the year before. It had a bit of a rough aftertaste, while refreshing and citrusy, it had a bit of a rough side to it, an almost bitter aftertaste that was not a welcome experience. Very good beer, very good brewery, but I think I want to stick to this one on tap.
