Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: kaseydad on 02-07-2010

A group of hop-heads and publicans challenged our Beer Camp brewers to push the extremes of whole-cone hop brewing. The result is this: a 100 IBU, whole-cone hurricane of flavor. Simply put —Hoptimum: the biggest whole-cone IPA we have ever produced. Aggressively hopped, dry-hopped, AND torpedoed with our exclusive new hop varieties for ultra-intense flavors and aromas.

Resinous "new-school" and exclusive hop varieties carry the bold and aromatic nose. The flavor follows the aroma with layers of aggressive hoppiness, featuring notes of grapefruit rind, rose, lilac, cedar, and tropical fruit—all culminating in a dry and lasting finish.

A - Pours a clear golden orange with a tight, thick 2 finger eggshell white head. Head sticks around forever with decent lacing.

S - Sticky pine right up front, with a touch of citrus and some bready malt.

T - Citrus notes galore! Huge pineapple, and mango up front, followed by an even bigger pine presence. Slight booziness on the finish, but it plays well with the hops. Slight malt sweetness in there as well.

M - Creamy, with a lot of resin. Coats the mouth the way an IPA should.

O - A pretty awesome DIPA. Hops are the big players here, so don't go in expecting anything else. Not quite on par with some of the other top-tier DIPAs, but definitely a god bang for your buck.

12oz. bottled 3/14/12.

Brilliantly clear, deep gold. Small head dissipates quickly. Spots of lacing on the glass.

Lots of Citra aroma, and the kind I don't really like. Grassy and borderline onion-like. Some fruit in there.

Plenty of IBUs and hop flavor, but the malt overcompensates. In fact, this beer is just too sweet and syrupy. Plenty of resinous and spicy hop flavor, but I want it to shine through even more. Alcohol is well-hidden, and the beer remains drinkable despite the sweetness. Good carbonation and weight.

Too sweet and malty. Not a good Double IPA in my book.

A: Pours a golden-orange, mostly clear, moderate foamy head
S: Slight hops, some citrus, oranges
T: Strong hops taste right off the bat, definite grapefruit, oranges, slight sweetness in the background, very little malt character, bitter for the most part
M: Somewhat smooth, easy drinkability, does not taste like a 10%+ ABV
O: Excellent DIPA, tastes like signature sierra nevada with even more of an emphasis on the citrusy hops than some of their other offerings, a definite try for the hop-head

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a snifter

Appearance: Beautiful copperish/deep orange color. Decent lacing remains on glass afterwards.

Smell: Intense Pine and Citrus. Very aromatic. Herbal/resinous, some sweet malt detected, can even smell a hint of alcohol.

Taste: Wow! As others have noted, first taste really explodes on the palate. Immediate bitter hops, huge grapefruit taste (hop heads will adore this!). Sweet, caramel malt finish. Slight peppery finish with the alcohol, but certainly enjoyable.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full.

Overall: Wow, I was expecting something along the lines of Torpedo and was completely surprised. An amazingly pungent beer with intense flavor. The first sip can be overwhelmingly hop bombish, but it balances out. Quite drinkable for 10.4% ABV as well, though I wouldn't recommend having more than 2 of these at a time. A job well done by Sierra Nevada!

On tap at the Fridge

Poured into a Dogfish Head Signature Snifter.

Pours a medium ¼” thick white colored head, which rapidly diminishes to a thin film.
Excellent lace, sticks to the side of the glass with each drink, beautiful.
Gorgeous amber color. Classic looks! Beautiful!

The aroma attacks your senses with distinct, dry hopped, floral, herbal and resin hops, with a hint of pine to finish it/you off! This is followed by medium intense but rich, refined, grainy malt, the malt fights to come out but is buried by the incredible spicy hops. Amazing nose! Very refined despite the power.

Crisp, distinct, powerful entry on the palate of bitter, dry hopped, resiny and herbal hops. Spicy. Exceptionally enjoyable and totally dominating. Wow!
Followed by distinct, rich, refined roasted grain malt.
The crisp acidity, full creamy mouth feel, fine carbonation and medium sweetness makes for an exceptionally balanced ale.
Unbelievably delicious!! The hops dominate totally.

Exceptionally long, bitter hop finish with some malt trying unsuccessfully to come forward. The hop oils linger forever!!

This is an extraordinary, delicious powerful ale. Complex and superbly balanced.
This is why we search for the best the craft world has to offer! What an effort from SN and rather unexpected.
Highly Recommended! Worth traveling for!
If bottled watch your dates, though this review is from draft, the bottled version is very close in flavor profile but has about a two month to maybe three month window before it starts to lose some of the hop intensity.

Poured from 12oz bottle into Globe glass.

A. Pours 3 finger head. Thick lacing. Good retention. Color is a dark orange. Pretty typical looking of a good DIPA.

S. Smell is big on the hops. Citrusy, and piney hops. Nice hop presence. Get a little bit of a sweeter caramel malt underneath the hops. A faint alcohol trace.

T. Taste is a little more restrained on the hops. Definitely a bitter beer, but also has a pretty strong malt presence as well. Tastes similar to a lot of the SN IPAs. Not a lot of hop flavor, but a mouth coating bitterness. Pretty drinkable DIPA. A little different take than a lot of others.

M. Medium/full bodied. Lingering bitterness. Medium carbonation.

O. Pretty solid beer from SN. Not my favorite DIPA, but a beer I would like to see added to Sierra Nevada's regular lineup. Easy driking.

Poured from their 12oz bottle...

Appearance - Poured nearly 3 fingers of litel yellow amber head, color of the beer is a brilliant translucent lite copper orange. I'm getting incredible lacing here. At the end of the glass, half of my glass is completely coated with lacing - O M G!

Smell - Wow huge citrus smells here, pineapple, orange, ruby red grapefruit, and some nice vanilla carmels. Really smells nice.

Taste - No joke, the first sip literally explodes citrus across the tongue in a wonderful way, making the mouth water. The citrus is very complex and balanced, with ruby grapefruit, yellow grapefruit, grapefruit and orange zests, some pineapple, which quickly transitions to sticky moist green hops, green and floral, finishing with touches of pine, grapefruit skins and peels, and a whiff of white pepper. there is a delicious citrus and carmel sweetness that rides alongside all of this, just fantastic

Mouthfeel - A little more than medium, the bright citrusy and hoppy oils and resins are absolutely mouthcoating. The carb is on the low side, which lets the flavors build and intensify throughout the sip. The finish is profound, leaving the more bittering aspects of the hops way long into the finish, but your mouth corners will be filled with traces of semi sweet citrus, carmel, and sticky hop resins - just awesome!

Overall - I really love a good DIPA, and this at or very near the top. The last time I remember feeling this "moved" after a few sips was with a fresh bottle of The Oracle...this is just SO complex, SO perfectly balanced, No punches at all, just a breathtaking and contemplative transition and complexity and balance - there are absolutely no flaws here, TRY THIS, this may arguably be the perfect DIPA. I'm giving this one 5's across the board.

Pale golden golden color with sticky white head. Lots of sweet tropical fruits on the nose like pineapple, clementines, and mango.

Assertive sweet caramel malt body with touches of toffee up front. Compliments the sweetness of the following fruity hop flavors. Amazingly tropical with the balance in the form of a harsh bitter finish and a touch of detectable alcohol. A really good brew at 10.3% abv. Layers work well together. On the sweeter side for dipas with a noticeable malt body but the finish is nice and harsh as well. Unique.
