Appearance: Opaque, deep amber body surmounted by a moderate, dense tan head, which retains well. The lacing is thivk and glass-coating.
Aroma: Prominent chocolate and nut notes, with a bit of smoke and earth, as well as toasted malt and caramel. Rather pleasing.
Taste: Opens with toasted malt and bitter cocoa, these carry throughout hr taste. Towards the finish, an earthy, smoky note appears., as well as a mild flourish of herbal hops.
Mouth feel: Smooth, soft, quite pleasant.
Drinkability/notes: A very well-made example of a classic brown ale. Perhaps a bit moe over-the-top than its English antecedent, but its very good.
Presentation: Packaged in a short twelve-ounce brown glass bottle with a pry-off crown, served in a New Belgium Brewing chalice.

Sampled tonight on 6/26/14. Found this bottle in the back of the cooler so it is a good year old I am guess BUT there isn't a expiration date anyone on the bottle and this brew is now RETIRED and no longer brewed. But opened it and it was fine. Bottle chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured into a 14 ounce glass 'Texas style " boot.
Pours a clear dark brown in color with a good 3-finger off-white head! Good carbonation with some sediment left in the bottom of the bottle. The aroma is of roasted malts, hazel nut and brown sugar. Very nice! The taste is close to the aroma but not as strong BUT pretty good overall with all the flavors mentioned above coming through lots of the hazelnut 'nut' flavor in the mix. A slight dry smoke finish but still good.
