12oz bottle from the 2013 seasonal release poured into a Founders snifter today 10/2/2013.
Pours a deep brown body with an effervescent offwhite head that dissipates over the course of a few minutes, leaving thick lacing. Doesn't illuminate much. The lacing sticks a bit as the beer drinks down, but nothing too special.
Smell is pretty ordinary to be honest. It smells just like SNPA but without hops.. its probably that Chico yeast scent. A bit of toffee and bread, some of that spicy Chico yeast flavour. Not a whole lot else, not particularly strong or even anything-forward.
The flavour profile is solid. The toffee and caramel sweetness nicely balances out the mild piney bitterness on the backend. The yeast's spicy flavour persists throughout, creating a nice blend of different flavours. Very drinkable.
A bit thin, watery but not too much so for the style. It's not too dry, pretty refreshing actually. Carbonation is solid, and its very drinkable. Thats all I can really say about this beer.
Its a decent brown ale. I've had better brown ales, but this isn't the worst brown ale out there, especially at the typical Sierra Nevada price point. This feels kind of SNPA without the hops.. I would definitely take Surly Bender or DFH Indian Brown over this any day.

A - Impressive head over a dark brown, mostly opaque brew. Good lacing.
S - This might be the age, but not much more than some harsh malt notes with a bit of bread.
T - Surprisingly good. Some nice malt, roasted grains. Some bitterness on the close, but very easy to drink.
M - Lively and crisp, which shocked me, given the age.
O - This was a beer well beyond its standard drink by period, which actually speaks well of it, because it held up surprisingly well. When I saw it on the shelf, I knew I had to try it, because it was something I might never see again. I'm glad I did, because it was an impressive brew, even with the age on it. Hope it comes around again.
