Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tulip pint.
***Served at cellar temp., or even a little warmer. Maybe 60 degrees.
A--Dark brown--almost russet or ruby, verging on something opaque--body with a perfect two finger creamy off-white head that holds well and laces beautifully. A little dark but who's counting?
S--Deep and roasty: brown sugar, toffee, damp earth, some lower molasses notes. A symphony of darker malts. Maybe some woodsmoke and maple sryup? Lovely.
T--Even better than the nose. Tasting this confirms what the nose suggests--namely, that there's some smoke going on her. Not much, toward the back, but there's some faint bacon/beef jerky hanging out that I really like. It combines perfectly on the finish with the woody, earthy hops. It almost tastes like the first fire in your fireplace, and reminds me that autumn is a dry, crispy season. The malt is also in full effect at the onset and middle of the flavor profile--more toffee, brown sugar, and honeyed whole wheat breadcrust. Very fresh breadiness going on, so so comforting.
M&D--Both are spot on. Mouthfeel is creamy and gently carbonated, just how I like it. At 5.5 I could throw back plenty of these and not get bored or spinning.
Kind of a cross between Smutty's Old Brown Dog (in its hoppiness), Geary's Autumn (in its malt profile), and Weyerbacher Fireside (in its level of smoke). All three are great beers if you ask me, and Tumbler is greater than the sum of its parts. Plus you can't beat the price point.
Highly recommended, though not very nutty (the hops eat up the parts of the profile where those flavors would go, I feel). If you like nuttier browns this may not be the one for you.

Sampled tonight on 6/26/14. Found this bottle in the back of the cooler so it is a good year old I am guess BUT there isn't a expiration date anyone on the bottle and this brew is now RETIRED and no longer brewed. But opened it and it was fine. Bottle chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured into a 14 ounce glass 'Texas style " boot.
Pours a clear dark brown in color with a good 3-finger off-white head! Good carbonation with some sediment left in the bottom of the bottle. The aroma is of roasted malts, hazel nut and brown sugar. Very nice! The taste is close to the aroma but not as strong BUT pretty good overall with all the flavors mentioned above coming through lots of the hazelnut 'nut' flavor in the mix. A slight dry smoke finish but still good.
