Notes/Commercial Description:
Tumbler is our take on the classic brown ale – full of roasted malt flavor but delicate on the palate and perfect for crisp fall days. Layered with notes of chocolate and toasted bread and a hint of smoke, Tumbler is the ultimate autumn beer, so grab a seat and watch as the leaves come tumbling down.

Bottle poured into a pint glass.

A: A beautiful head appeared on the pour that lasted for minutes. The head was a great tawny off-white and the beer was a deep, dark brown. The head and beer left great lacing all over the glass.

S: The aroma is sweet with a mild nutty and roasted porter type smell. There was a faint aroma of hops.

T: The initial flavor was mildly sweet with a strong burnt grain characteristic taking over. The aftertaste was mildly coffee-like and a little chocolatey.

M: The MF is creamy and has great texture. It is not overly heavy or light in the mouth.

O: This beer is a very good brown ale and a perfect Autumn beer. It is tasty, rich, and wonderfully satisfying.

To me its a little early to drink autumn beers, even more so now living in hot NC,but I wanted a outdoor grilling beer and this fit the bill.Poured into a standard pint glass a brilliant chesnut brown with a light tannish colored one finger head that settled into a creamy mass.Aromas are lightly roasted with a fair amount of nut, some caramel sweetness as well, almost like a faint pecan pie element to it.Well rounded on the palate, some caramel and lightly roasted nuttiness along with some roast, a real nice shot of pine in the finish. Its a great blend of roasty and sweetish malt and earthy, piney hop,one of the best brown ales I have had, well done again from SN.

On tap at the Oak Cafe. Pours a solid brown color with light tinges of copper, decent clarity, fluffy white head that reduces quickly leaving little lacing behind. Nose is clean with some dried cocoa powder and a very heavy nuttiness that smells both delicious and inviting. First sip is reminiscent of charred wood; oak and maple flavors pull through, along with a strong nutty profile. Earthy, dirty esters run rampant atop a very slight hop flavor that stays on the leafy/grassy side of things. Bitterness is low overall, but it balances out the earth tones enough to keep things interesting. Unsweetened chocolate, roasted caramel malt, and burnt walnuts are left on the palate, fading long into the aftertaste. Medium body, maybe even slightly on the thin side, medium amount of carbonation.

Sierra Nevada never fails to impress me, and this is certainly no exception. A very solid brown ale with a great nutty flavor that does nothing but hit the mark. At 5.5% ABV, this beer is drinkable as can be. Chalk this one up as a victory.

A: Medium copper with excellent clarity. The persistant, light-tan head is composed of rock bubbles.

S: Moderate caramel and biscuity malt and an unusual yet pleasant smoked malt aroma. A light earthy hops, no diacetyl.

T: A strong malt flavor with caramel and that moderate smoke character. A medium-light amount of malt sweetness mid-palate with an medium-dry finish. There is a light citrus hops flavor and moderate hops bitterness. The balance is somewhat bitter. The aftertaste is a light toasty malt and light hops bitterness.

M: A moderately creamy, medium-full bodied beer with moderate carbonation.

O: The freshly roasted and smoked malt gives this a nice seasonal twist. I particularly like that this isn't all that sweet as some browns can be.

I am a big fan of Sierra Nevada and this one didnt disappoint. A good brown ale is perfect for autumn so i think they hit the nail on the head with this one. Not only is this beer perfect for the season its also a great brown ale in general. It isnt as heavy as a DFH Indian Brown Ale or Palo Santo Marron or a Samuel Smith Nut Brown Ale and also isnt as high in alcohol content which makes it very drinkable yet maintaining all of that great maltiness that we love about brown ales. This is a great beer to kick back on a patio or deck and watch the leaves come down.

In a pint glass, the beer was a medium brown color with a thin tan head. No lacing.
It had a nice roasted malt aroma, with a little bit of caramel.
Sweet caramel taste, a little nutty, with some late hops.
A very satisfying autumn beer, definitely reminiscent of the fall season.

This is a good looking beer; but don't judge a beer by its cover. I might be somewhat uneducated regarding brown ales, but this ale has the taste of burnt bacon with a pungent aroma. I have always been very impressed with SN but this comes up short. Still a brewery that others should aspire to reach but I will stick with pale ale and torpedo until the celebration ale comes out.

A - A pretty brown with a tan head.

S - The nose is heavy on the roasted malts and some faint floral notes from the hops.

T - There is some nuttiness at first. Then, you are hit with some roasted malt flavor with some hints of coffee. There is also a little bit of dark chocolate flavor towards the end of each sip.

M - Medium bodied with medium carbonation.

O - This is a great Fall beer. It is really drinkable and has a well-balanced and subtle flavor profile. I could definitely drink a couple of these in a single session and be very happy.

Notes from 9/12/10

Dark brown translucent pour with two fingers of billowy head that sticks around for awhile and leaves some sticky lacing.

Smell is earthy roasted malt with a slight bit of sweetness and very faint hop presence.

Taste is similar to smell, earthy malt with some nice nutty notes and slight caramel sweetness.

Light mouthfeel with a nice amount of carbonation.

A nice brown ale. The earthiness may get old after a couple, and just not interesting enough to want to drink more than one or two, but a nice fall beer.

12oz bottle. Pours pours ruby brown with a big pillowy light tan head that retains fairly well and laces the glass.

The aroma is roasted nutty malts and some molasses / maple and chocolate.

The flavor is a bit subdued - roasted nutty malts with a light dry bitterness at the end. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and a bit watery.

Overall, one of the better browns I've had in a while. It's a bit subdued and watery though.
