25oz bottle purchased at Premier Gourmet in Buffalo, NY.
Pours an opaque black with two fingers of bubbly beige froth and big globs of lacing on the tulip glass.
Smell is prunes, dates, tobacco, flowery and resinous hops, ethanol, dark chocolate, cocoa powder, roasted malts, citrusy hop oils, some grassy notes, nice doughy aromas, black licorice, fruity esters, a hint of melon, and a slight smokiness. Very complex nose.
Taste is spicy and astringent bitterness upfront, roasted malts, floral hops, cookie dough, semi-sweet dark chocolate, hot liquor burns the throat and lingers on the palate. Fairly simple bitter/boozy flavour with little else to offer. Still tastier than your average beer, but disappointing given my expectations.
Mouthfeel is fuller than medium bodied, prickly spiciness precedes an abrasive citric bitterness, syrupy smooth middle transitions to a chalky finish with alcohol on the cough.
A strange beast indeed, this drinks like a Black DIPA-American Barleywine hybrid. While I admire the originality of the recipe, it’s not nearly as enjoyable as I thought it would be, and it pales in comparison to the Grand Cru. Overall, Jack & Ken’s Ale is merely a solid and interesting brew that falls way short of the greatness I've come to expect from SN.

Made the mistake of leaving this in the freezer overnight and had to thaw it. Having this at a very warm red wine like temperature and it is fantastic. Deep dark chestnut brown with a tan head that billows forth. Smell is delicious and complex. A healthy alcohol presence and sweetness fused to deep notes of toffee and warm sweet brown bread and touch of fruitcake. Lot of dark fruits, raisins and figs mostly. Flavor is incredible. Sweet rich and alcoholic. Lots of caramel and toffee with a healthy roasted grain char. Finish is dry and nicely hopped. Hoppier than most barleywines I've had. It helps to cleanse the palate of the considerable alcohol and make the beer more drinkable. Carbonation is nice, though no doubt it suffered from its frozen to room temperature journey into my glass. Smooth but just a little under carbonated in my circumstance. Weight is thickish and lightly syrupy. This is a great and highly drinkable beer. I would be sipping it slower but as the carbonation has suffered at my neglect I am going a little faster than I might otherwise. Just a superb brew that drinks like a dry irish stout in spite of the abc. If I had not forgotten and froze this one it might be off the charts.
