On tap at the Sierra Nevada 30th anniversary party. Nice professional appearance, copper color, some bright orange color, nice pillowy head on it. Aroma was wonderfully hoppy, plenty of pine, mild citrus, no hint of alcohol and lots of sticky icky type resinous notes.

Nice blast of tropical fruit hop notes, toasted caramel malt notes, just the right amount of sweetness and bitterness, never a heavy or sticky mouthfeel. Can't believe how well it hides alcohol. Lots of hops and relatively modest bitterness.

I wouldn't argue with anyone if they said this was Sierra Nevada's best hoppy beer. Was my favorite of the day.

Why was I not advised that this came out in bottles?

On tap at URGE.

A: Brownish red with a massive beige sea foam head. Good retention and scattered lacing.

S: Aromatic floral notes blend with grapefruit and pine. The hops harmonize with caramel and bread.

T: Pronounced bread and caramel malt with sweet citrus that reminds me of orange and grapefruit. There's evident pine and earth as well. Bitterness is at a moderate level, and the beer gives the impression of balance. There's a little booze in the finish.

M: Medium body with lower high carbonation.

Overall: Malty and balanced but still good.

Poured from the tap as a series of servings in a tasting glass.

The copper of an old penny with just a touch of haze. Two fingers of creamy sand-colored head recedes after a minute to a thin filmy top layer and leaves the walls sticky with pocked lace.

Vibrant nose. It’s mostly syrupy, sugared grapefruit and ethanol, though I also get hints of mango, orange blossom, honey and some odd cheesiness.

The flavor is similarly sticky with grapefruit, honey and burnt sugar. It's a heavy, boozy flavor, like hop liqueur.

Peppery medium carbonation pokes the tongue amid the syrupy, viscous body. High bitterness is balanced by a rather sweet burnt sugar malt character. There’s more ethanol in the flavor than the feel, though there are some fumes in the mouth.

Everything’s in accord with Hopsichord. It strikes a nice balance between burly hops and sugary malt, just toeing the edge of barleywine strength, though the noticeable booziness and heft make it less drinkable than your average DIPA.

Dark for the style, dark reddish brown with a creamy tan head that sticks around for ages. Smells of pungent citrusy hops, grapefruit, pine, and very sweet malt. Taste follows the nose and the finish is quick. The hops are assertive but this shouldn't be considered a hop bomb. Sweet and powerful malt profile. This has several similarities to fresh bigfoot. Medium bodied, smooth and oily, leaves a sticky coating.

Draft at The Rose and Crown.

Amber body with a thin, lasting head.

Herbal, earthy aroma. A lot of caramel malt, very clean American ale yeast profile. The hop nose isn't terribly impressive.

Palate is similar to the nose. Caramel heavy up front, with an herbal, earthy, citrus rind hop flavor. Heavy mouthfeel, a lot of caramel sweetness that clashes with the herbal hop flavors somewhat. Plenty of bitterness in the finish, but not as abrasive as a beer like Hoptimum. Signature Sierra Nevada here, exactly what you'd expect from them. Not particularly enjoyable to me, but not bad.

Longtime SNPA lover meets a DIPA that shows what SN is capable of when they decide to experiment.

A - Beautiful amber, with a nice head and lacing

S - Powerful tropical fruit with the hint of the pine you expect (hope for) in a DIPA.

T - Tasted immediately after a Hoptimum and the tropical "sweetness" of Hopsichord was a huge differentiator. I liked the draft Hoptimum very much. I loved the Hopsichord!

M - Met expectations. Not a negative, just not memorable.

D - Excellent. The 9.7% ABV was not a factor as the full flavor dominated the experience. I'm already pining for my next Hopsichord and my first was only 1 hour ago.

Growler from Superstar beverage in Bayport.

A - A beautiful deep amber. Tan white head that leaves a little lacing.

S - Beautiful mixture of earth and pineapple. Hints of floral notes sit in the back of the nose.

T - Piney, Earthy, and a perfect balance of sweet malty goodness. Pinapple weaves in and out ever so subtlety through the notes.

M - Very smooth a little oily, but not an undesirable oily.

D - Once again a very smooth DIPA. For 9.7% the alcohol is just barely detectable, warming but very subtlety. for a higher ABV beer, i could drink this all night no problem.

On tap at Belmont Station the other night.

The beer pours the telltale, SN copper amber color with good head retention and lacing. The nose is pretty exotic, showcasing a boatload of hoppy goodness. In this case that consists of considerable earthiness, dry grapefruit rind, ginger, a hint of pine and orange citrus. The nose is very, very perfumy in this one. The flavor profile replicates the nose pretty closely, and is all West Coast IPA/DIPA. There's some noticeable, underlying sweetness, but the beer finishes very much on the dry side, with a long, bitter finish. While the beer is not hot or tiring on the palate, I do pick up some alcohol, which is a reminder that this is a serious DIPA I'm drinking. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a long, bitter finish. Drinkability isn't bad, though as noted above, I can tell the alcohol is up there in this one, and although this is excellent, I'm not sure I could drink more than a single glass.

This is a very impressive beer, and is like nothing else I've ever had from SN. Well done.

Edit: Had this beer a month or so after it's release, and the beer seemed a bit maltier and boozier, much more in the so called East Coast style. Still very delicious, but there's no doubt that added time changed the flavor character of this beer considerably.

appearance - a nice amber, white foam head, sticky webby lacing

smell - floral, citrus and pine hops, big hop nose

taste - resinous and grassy hops, complex citrus flavors and aromas permeate the taste buds

drinkability - really enjoyable hop character, powerful ipa

I had a draft of this at Rattle & Hum last weekend, which must have had 30-plus Sierra brands on draft as a part of a promotion. I guess this is the fist double IPA i've had from this brewery. It may even be the fist beer above 7% from them. It was very good.

Poured a dark orange color with plenty of carbonation and a lot of hop aroma. Citrus and a little pine. Taste was great. Very well balanced hop, malt and not too strong on the alcohol. However, at 9.7% you probably don't want to drink too many of these but they are great none the less.

Pours amber orange in color with a creamy/foamy 1 finger off white head that lasted a while and left great sticky lacing clinging to glass; exactly what an IPA should look like.

Smells of massive hops, with floral and piney hops dominating; also smelled of flowers, citrus hops, grapefruit, orange peel, lemon zest, grass, caramel, faint grains and light alcohol. Huge hop arome that was wonderful to inhale.

Tastes like it smells with massive hops, including floral hops, piney hops, flowers, citrus hops, grapefruit, orange peel, grass, caramel, faint grains, cinnamon or cumin, spices like pepper and light alcohol that actually brought some heat.

Mouthfeel was slick and oily, this slid down easy only to have the hop spices flare up with the alcohol burn; average carbonation, a medium body and slight bitter finish with a hoppy spice blast at the end.

Good beer, but the only knock was the hops and burn were almost too much and took away from the drinkability; the burn bordered on harsh and sizzled my taste buds. To me this was a spicier version of the Torpedo Extra IPA and really pushed the flavor to the limit. With that said, I'd still like to try this again.

Had this gem on tap last night at the Flat Iron here in Greensboro.Poured into a tulip glass a deep copper/brass with a well defined lacy white head,it settled into a creamy,soapy-like mass of froth.Intense and I mean intense pine resin in the nose,maybe the most assertive hop aromas I have ever come across,the grapefruit rind is large as well,but the resiny goodness was just intoxicating.Sharp resiny,sticky hop flavors hit the taste buds with a wallop,the citric punch delivered after the first shot of pine gives the beer even more hoppy depth.There is a sweetish caramel base but it doesnt intrude to much on the hops,to many DIPA's are sweet alcohol/malt bombs that overshadow the hops,this one...no chance.A great beer and a privelage to try,they did great work here.

On draft at Rattle n Hum, NYC.

Poured a shiny copper hue with a one finger foamy white head. There was good retention and lacing.

The smell featured waves of herbal and citrus hops and a full caramel malt.

The flavor was upfront resinous earthy hops with a full malt backbone. Residual hop spice as well.

The mouthfell was full and smooth.

Overall an outstanding hop driven ale. The perfect DIPA.

I usually don't like to speak of color/appearance because honestly who cares if it tastes good, but this "IPA" pours a glorious reddish Amber with Amble bubbly inviting head/lace.

A lot of aroma comes through with this beer; a boat load of tropical fruit, delicious, with some lighter pine and citrus. The tropical fruit is so so so inviting...

Taste which is freakin' amazing. This beer has a robust/solid malt backbone of pale and caramel malts which is spectacular. Lots of tropical hop flavor with such a low low lingering hop bitterness. This is perfect; I really can't say enough. It has a delicious long smooth bittersweet finish which is to die for. SN better bottle this ASAP!

Best IPA I've ever had; fresh, hoppy but not overly bitter... just awesome, I recommend you find this guy if possible

The citrus flavor is nice and the amber hue is just beautiful, Sierra Nevada has outdone its smaller, niche IPA peers with this brew. I agree with the above reviewers.

I was in Chico for Thanksgiving weekend and went to the brewery to sample some beers. This is a wonderful beer - one of the best I have ever tasted. It's under the American Double/Imperial IPA style, but it's really an incredible red ale. It's strong, so it's nice to sit back on a cold day and enjoy over time.

IPA/Bigfoot/Red lovers do your best to get to the brewery and try it out. You'll thank yourself.

On tap for the SN 30th Anniversary at Eli Cannon's. This was a beer camp #36 brew that a local participated in so Eli's got the keg.

This was served to me in a lovely SN 30th tulip with a decent 2 finger white creamy head. By the time I took my first sip the head dissipated to a thin white ring, leaving lacey patterns down the side. So far, pretty text book. The hue is interesting, a touch more amber and deep gold than I initially expected.

The nose is WOW! Citrus and pine, a hint of sticky sweet malt as well. The grapefruit/citrus salad really is the winning profile here.

The first sip put me into my happy hoppy place. The flavors, body, and mouth feel all compliment each other in this tasty package. The grapefruit begins the journey, making pit stops at pine and orange before arriving at a perfectly bitter finish. The grain bill adds the necessary depth to this one (2 row, Golden Promise, Munich, Caramel 45, Special B), adding a touch of sweetness to the finish that blends well with the bittering hops (which are listed as "experimental variety").

The body on this is exactly what I want from a DIPA, not too thin yet not heavy and viscous. A pretty intricate task to accomplish with the hop profile. I only start to get hints of the alcohol by the very end of the glass, it surely did not inhibit me from ordering another. It will sneak up on you of course, but it is far from a chore to drink two of these in a sitting. I agree with Flexabull, get this one bottled!!!

This was the star of the show (among many other stars) in my opinion.

Pours a bright and clear light amber color with a nice creamy white head, good lacing down the sides of the glass.

Aromas are phenomenal. The nose is just full of fresh resiny hops and tons of fruits. Mostly orange, tangerine, apricots, fresh cut pine, and resin.

Taste is just like the nose. Tons of complex hops flavors bounce around your mouth. Apricots, tangerines, oranges, and sugary grapefruit. Backdrop provides a slightly sweet creamy malts. Finish is crisp, tangy, slightly dry, and with hints of pine bitterness.

Mouthfeel is perfect. Smooth, very full, creamy, and with lively carbonation.

Drinkability is excellent. This is the best DIPA I have had in quite some time. Awesome stuff. Hoping I can get a growler fill in a few days.

Side Note : PLEASE Sierra Nevada, bottle this beer! I know Hoptimum is the next bottled offering, and that is a nice beer, but man... I thought Hopsichord was quite a bit better.

22oz bottle into snifter.

A: Pours a clear caramel with a bubbly short lived head that faded into a thin scum.
S: Citruy leafy hops, bready malt, and a bit of simcoe cat piss.
T: Harsh hops, very cat pee-like, and dominating. I know this is supposed to taste this way but it’s not my favorite. If you love simcoe this is your beer though. I do get a redeeming hint of citrus in the finish.
M: Medium body, oily greasy mouthfeel, with tingly carbonation. I had no idea the alcohol in this beer was so high because it is hidden so well.
O: Again, if you love simcoe you will love this beer. I don’t not love it, and I know this flavor profile is what SN was going for, but I guess I just wasn’t in the mood for this tonight.

A: Pours a very deep orange, pretty much bronze shade with a finger of off white head which recedes to a small pool in the middle and a rim on the edge of the glass.
S: Smells dank piney and resinous with a bit of sweet caramel smells and some tropical fruit
T: Herbal hop flavors with a bit of pine, some caramel sweetness, Almost medicinal at some times but not off putting. Fruity on the swallow with a bit of bitterness that is sharp at first but fades quickly
M: Full bodied and somewhat thick, carbonation is a little prickly but not overly so
O: A very well done and tasty beer. I'm very happy that I picked up a bottle when I visited the brewery.;

Pours a deep orange and light brown hazy color with a fluffy white head with moderate lacing and retention.

Aroma is caramel malts and resinous hops with spicy finish.

Taste is of malty and nutty caramel upfront with aromatic and citrus hops following. Bitterness is present towards the end to balance the sweet malts.

Body is heavy with low carbonation. Aftertaste is bitter and hoppy.

A nice and malty DIPA from Sierra Nevada, good balance between hops and malt. I'd love to try it fresh on tap.

Poured from a 750ml into SN Tulip

A - Pours a deep clear red w/ 1 finger fluffy tan head that slow fades to a thick cap that leaves great lacing

S - Smells of lots of earthy, spicy, and sweet hops, very resinous, with hints of pine and grapefruit, toffee and alcohol also come through.

T - Tastes of malty sweet caramel w/ a spicy alcohol, and a forward bitterness. Resiny hops, and toasty malts play well together, as well as light melon and citrus fruits.

M - Here is the only place this beer throws me off. The mouthfeel and bitterness are quite harsh, not only out of balance harsh, but they give an astringent scrape in the throat that continues to linger. The medium body and light carbonation are nice though.

O - I would have loved this beer were it not for the harsh bitterness and astringency of it. Really enjoyed the nose and flavor, and apart from the harshness, the drinkability seemed good. The malty backbone was nice; just can't get past the offputting harsh bitterness.

Growler provided by Sean at our Southampton mega tasting, thanks! Poured into Lost Abbey tumbler, wasnt told what this was but was able to guess the brewery. Color is a bit darker then the typical west coast DIPA, an amber orange with an off white head that settles to a cap. Smell is hoppy up front but very balanced. Lots of pine, floral hops, some citrus, and a fruity malt character. Taste is equally balanced. Caramel malts, sugary, some light toffee, pine hop, orange peel and citrus, a bit of earthy hops in the finish. Not too bitter. Medium body and a low carbonation, a bit sugary mouthfeel. I enjoyed this beer and it is one of the first west coast takes on the east coast DIPA. Hopefully this will make it out of CA for a few on tap appearances in Chicago.

Thanks to Sean for sharing this one. Served in a Heady Topper glass as a warm-up for our Southampton tasting.

A - Pours with a finger of orange-tinged tan foam that settles to a collar and some wisps. Body is a hazed amber color that seems quite dark for the style.

S - Quite balanced for a West Coast DIPA. I had this blind, and it took me a while to guess the style (and eventually the beer as well). I found it to be more in the mold of an Imperial Red or aggressively hopped strong ale. In any case a good amount of pine, earthy herbs, light citrus, and tropical fruits mingle with a heft caramel malt backbone.

T - Taste is fairly similar, with a mixture of caramel, burnt sugars, tropical fruits, and light citrus zest. I remember asking Sean about freshness as this seemed fairly malt-forward, although I can't believe this is the same as the batch from November either - if it is it's held up remarkably. Surprisingly moderate bitterness.

M - Medium bodied, medium-low growler carbonation, resiny finish, and reasonably hidden alcohol.

D - I enjoyed this quite a bit, but I believe it's a bit miscast as a West Coast DIPA. Reminds me more of an East Coast DIPA or an Imperial Amber/Red Ale. I see a lot of other reviewers agree with me on this one. Hope it shows up on-tap in Chicago at some point so I could spent a little more time with it.
