2011 batch, 1.5 pint bottle into New Belgium snifter

Appearance is a orange/copper with a thick almost soupy off-white head that has some massive clingage and stays around for over an hour! Smell is lots of oily hops, primarily of the grapefruit variety but also some pine. In the taste hop tastes emerge similar to the SN Pale Ale but much more intense. Lots of bitter grapefruit and a bit of resin. Malt is light tasting but fairly assertive. Mouthfeel is medium in body and carb and a bit thick, but not syrupy.

A very well balanced DIPA that is surprisingly understated allowing lots of hops but not in a way that challenges you to do anything but sip. Super hopheads may find this weak but this is perfect for me. An absolutely beautiful looking DIPA that I would have more than one of.

On cask at Tornonado in San Francisco.

Poured with a nice creamy one-finger head. Lacing is thin but each notch is evident.

Smell of piney hops and bread.

Taste is similar and two-fold--first the malt then the hops...the latter of which linger for some time.

True to cask form, carbonation is rightly low and serving temp is spot on. (sidebar: my jury is still out on 'flatter' mouthfeel when it comes to IPAs--it totally fits english style ales but American hoppy beers... a tougher sell to my palate; prickly hops seem to dance differently (and better?) on my tongue when more highly carbed methinks)

All that said, this is a very well put together brew.

On Tap at Taco Mac Decatur January 5 2012. 16 Ounce Pour.

(Appearance) beer arrives a medium copper tone with a light white surface cover. Carbonation is spritely. Beer is the slightest bit hazy. Lacing is poor in quality and quantity. An on-par appearance. 3

(Smell) aroma consists of very light floral and spicy hops and a hint of citrus fruit, some wet and some dry hopped. Malt body is mild as well. Pleasant light aroma to this beer but no off smells. 4

(Taste) Tastes of a light malty body with a mildly hopped bitter backbone. Malt character is complete with pale malts and a touch of caramel. Bitter hops most prevalent in the finish, rounding this as a slightly more bitter beer. Balance is close, but this could improve with more malt substance. 3.5

(Mouthfeel) Very light texture, with a mild level of carbonation and a slightly sticky and resinous texture lends a hand to the laid back approach the taste creates. Light body and a mild alcohol astringency here and there are discernible. One of the blander aspects of this beer is in the mouthfeel. 3

(Overall) This was an alright IPA but with so many alternatives on the market there's plenty of other options, even if you're going for a milder-tasting IPA. While its got it's character and enjoyment here and there, there's nothing standing out about this beer. 3

Appearance: It's a copper with a hint of orange. The head was thick and fluffy and came down to a nice tan surface coating.

Smell: Everything nice. It's got a big pine smell with a little citrus (more lemon than grapefruit). One of those IPA's that might get called out for smelling like Pine-Sol by some!

Taste: Not as big on the up-front aroma hops as I'd imagine. It's sticking with that piny taste. It transitions into some really round, sweet malt and a final big punch of grapefruit bitter. Slightly earthy.

Mouth-feel: Really creamy and fairly thick bodied. Just a little kick from the alcohol.

Overall: A really great beer. It's not really big on the aroma or bitter, but there is a nice balance and some really good earthy-piny flavours. They say the whole cone hops come wet from the bine and go straight into the boil, which might account for the nice depth of flavour without the overpowering (but also awesome) hoppy-ness of something dry-hopped like crazy.

Sample: 1 bottle 2011

A: Very thick head, great internal carbonation, pure copper orange in color

S: Very intense citrus notes, hints of herbal, almost grapefruit-like in nature

T: Amazing and strong hop flavor, citrus, nice balance between sweet and bitter elements

M: Incredibly smooth, nice floral aftertaste, not too lingering, does dry the mouth a bit, however

O: An excellent hop-forward brew, light in the mouth but strong in its flavor
