Poured into an old Rochefort chalice on 12/8/12
Brown and dark caramel hues. Rather clear. One finger of smooth light tan foam. Decent layer of thin retention, but no lace.
The aroma is straightforward - dark bread, light herbal spices and pepper, figs and dates. hints of raisins and brown sugar. It's easy to get drawn in to it.
The flavor starts off with a quick hit of raisin before turning very earthy with a distinct nuttiness. Bread is prominent throughout - toasted and dry. Fruity yeast notions linger on the back half.
Tight medium body with a coating, slightly gritty finish. Bold carbonation.
Overall, seems like a odd dubbel to me. Kind of a brown ale / dubbel amalgamation. Regardless, it's a good beer.
