Bottle into Sam Adams sensory glass.
Pours a nice gold color, with a one-finger off-white head that settles into a thin, soapy cap fairly quickly. Thin, spotty lacing on the sides of the glass.
Nose is a ice mix of bitter orange and grapefruit rind, bit of alcohol, pale malt sweetness underneath with a bit of light caramel. Bit of dank, piny pungency as well.
Taste is good as well. Pale caramel and intense grapefruity citrus mix up front, with a firm alcohol presence, the last hints of caramel fading into a deep, pungently bitter, grassy finish that lingers firmly on the palate with notes of pine and orange peel. Wow, big bitterness - reminds me of a more mid-western take, like a two-hearted that's doubled in practically every single way. Not sure what hops went into this one, but if I had to guess, I'd look for a big dose of the old-school c-hops, especially centennial, maybe simcoe, followed closely by cascade. A bit bitter for my tastes, but balanced.
Mouthfeel is spot on. Trademark of most Sierra Nevada beers - you don't notice the finish until you realize how perfect it is. Smooth, just a bit creamy, with the big hop dosage scrubbing away at the enamel with every sip. Full bodied, massive finish, very well done.
Overall, very good beer. Personally, I much prefer Hoptimus, but that's a matter of personal taste when it comes to bitterness level, not a judge of the beer's quality. Very good beer.
