Reviewed on 05/15/2011. Bottled on 03/30/2011. 12oz bottle poured into a tulip glass.
Pours a clear golden color that is not quite yellow but not quite orange. Usually it leans one way or the other but I really couldn't make a distinction. A finger of fluffy white foam develops and has decent retention with lacing to match.
There is a decent piny aroma that leads the way. It's not too strong overall but it is the dominant aroma. There a hint of some grassy hop character too. There really isn't much in the way of malt. This one is odd for me because while it pretty much all hops in the nose no aroma stands out above the other. As mentioned, the piny aromas are dominant but that relative to the other things going on in the nose.
The taste kicks off with some dank, resinous hop character. Some light citrusy notes are here as well. There is the slightest of sweetness from the malt, but not much. There is a huge bitterness in the finish that lingers until the next sip.
Medium body with medium carbonation. Semi-dry at the finish. Surprisingly, it doesn't feel slick or oily with the amount of hops and sticky bitterness.
This was a decent beer overall. It could be more balanced, something I don't usually say (or particularly care about) with DIPAs but this is so geared toward hops, and much of them providing bitterness, that it becomes borderline abrasive as the beer warms. That's a good thing sometimes but not so here.

Looks like standard double ipa, copper color, almost a full inch of white head on the top. Aroma was a bit of a letdown, the dry hopping just didn't pop on it.
The taste is what SN is so well renowned for. Ample caramel malt base that avoids sweetness, but provides a solid backdrop for a lot of old school hops. Has a lot of the flavors I was hoping to find in the aroma (citrus, tropical fruit). Solid stuff.

2011 vintage, so rating adjusted to current average.
Grapefruit and resin are prevalent, with notes of peach, light caramel malt, and a touch of cardboard oxidation.
Flavor reveals more cardboard throughout, with muted citrus notes of tangerine and grapefruit, reminiscent of sweettarts, leading to a moderately bitter, resiny finish.
Held up well, minus the oxidation notes. Exacerbates the bitterness too much for my liking.
