A: Black with a slight light brown head.

S: Oatmeal, roasted malt, coffee and chocolate in the nose.

T: Nice pleasant bitterness, medium and dark roast coffees, roasted malt and dark chocolate.

M: Medium-full bodied, and creamy smooth.

O: Very typical of the oatmeal stout style. Definitely recommended if you can find it. I personally had it on tap at the brewery.

12 FL. OZ. bottle
Served in a perfect pint glass

A - This is a dark beer. No light peaks through this one. It had about an inch of brown head.

S - The smell is of dark chocolate and delicious roasted malt.

T - I get some of that dark chocolate and roasted malt. I get a little anise, as well.

M - Pretty full

O - At first I thought it was pretty good. Then I got that anise flavor. I am not a fan of anise. I am guessing that developed as it aged. I have noticed that character with other older stouts. I would have probably liked it better 355 days ago when I got it.

Bottle: a solid, stubby 355mL brown bottle with an interesting Sierra Nevada-style old-school label.

Appearance: pours a dark brown tending toward black, with flaties visible against the light. One- and- a- half finger tan head rises up and lingers quite a time, decent lacing also.

Aroma: solid flavours of burnt oats, cocoa chocolate, coffee and molasses.

Taste: some oats here, but mostly just a thick smoke-driven bunch of heavy malts. Honestly a bit dull. Not all it had been cracked up to be.

Aftertaste: does linger for quite a time, which is nice. The smoke characteristics carry through nicely.

Mouth feel: heavier in body yet quite sharp instead of the usually smooth stout. Lower- to- mid carbonation.

Overall: an interesting but ultimately not worthwhile stout. The normal flavours of toffee, coffee and chocolate with some burnt oat to boot. Not worth the AU$125+ per case price, however. Not even nearly.

From my tasting notes: It poured a deep black with a substantial khaki head and heavy dark chocolate and roasted malts on the nose. The taste was very smooth with light carbonation for such a heavy looking brew. There were hints of chocolate, sweet roasted malt, and some oatiness with a bit of hop bitterness on the very end. This Oatmeal stout was like a toasty oatmeal dark chocolate chip cookie with the slight bitterness keeping it from becoming overly sweet. Should be even better with some age.
