We picked this beer up as a mix pack of IPA from Sierra Nevada and were extremely stoked by the beers inside. A little iffy about the black IPA (as they are more times than not just a porter wearing IPA's clothing), but the entire pack made us happy we bought it for $16.99 (consisted of a golden IPA, black IPA, rye IPA, and torpedo (extra) IPA. This (rye) by far is the winer in the pack. Every beer bares the signature S.N. flavour profile. So if you like their stuff, then you will like this beer/pack! (506 characters)

Has a big grassy hop nose with rye spice. Pours brilliant amber with persistent 3” off white foam cap. A well balanced beer with rich malt, bitter hops, pepper finish, rye spice. Has the rich, full rye body. A very drinkable rye IPA. (235 characters)

Was expecting more of a spicy and sour rye flavor in this one. It ends up being more like an amber IPA, body is a little heavy. Nothing off putting, though. It's fairly tasty but could use another kick of hops and some more rye. (228 characters)

Look - Dark ruby with a half finger that presents as off white. Leaves a fair bit of lacing.

Smell - immediately citrusy with pepper in the middle fading to a strong punch of its namesake.

Taste - Rye bread everywhere. The citrus stays around faintly and the pepper hits your throat upon finish. Gets a bit of a lingering sour dough taste as you continue into the bottle.

Feel - Medium bodied with light to medium carbonation and a slightly creamy finish.

Overall - It wasn't as good as I was expecting. In my opinion, GL Rye of The Tiger has it beat. Still would be worth a shot if you don't mind or truly enjoy sour dough bread. (634 characters)

This is a fun beer, great color, full mouthfeel, bright upfront flavors with a smooth, complex finish. This is a beer you will come back to! Fun, exciting, refreshing. Great job with the hop combinations used! (209 characters)

A - Pours a deep cedar/ amber color with a fluffy 2 finger head. Great retention with lacing.

S - A pleasant blend of citrus aromas mixed with hints of pepper. The lingering smell is very similar to that of rye bread.

T - Fairly sweet and malty up front transforming into a more bitter flavor. Similar to the scent you feel the peppery spices after the initial sweetness proceeded by a blend of citrus flavorings. Leaves a fairly bitter lingering aftertaste. Pleasant flavorings overall.

M - Medium bodied with mild carbonation. Fairly smooth and creamy feel. Fairly dry finish.

O - Very enjoyable beer overall, fairly bitter and dry; smooth and drinkable. Always been pleased with SN and the trend continues itself with this beer. (735 characters)

4 way IPA pack. I like the malt profile of this brew. Rye has slight spiciness and drying effect. Hops are more balanced. Ordinary brew from an
extraordinary brewery (165 characters)

Dark amber in color with a fingernail of beige covering a majority of the top. Moderate lacing is present. The aroma is a blend of peppery, gently spicy rye and sharp citrus hops. I taste initially a burst of citrus hops and the earthy rye. The back of the palate contains the gentle hop burn and the lingering bready rye note. The mouth is lightly oily and viscous. (372 characters)

Nice rye ipa. Sierra doesn't miss too often (if ever) in my book and this one follows that trend. Very drinkable and you really notice the spice of the rye, but its quite well balanced. (187 characters)

12oz bottle poured into a balloon snifter. The aroma is a strong, peppery and crusty rye bread with sweet marmalade and tropical notes and a light earthiness. It's a clear and brilliant amber hue with an effervescence to it and is topped by a big frothy and rocky, off-white head. It has an abundant, messy, and uneven retention and lace. The taste is a medium high bitter and contrasting medium sweet. The light creamy texture is supported by a fluffy big foam carbonation. The medium full body juicy with sweet citrus notes and an abundant grainy contrast. It finishes slick with a bright candy citrus and bread crust swell that mellows leaving just a mild, moderate lingering clean pepper and rye bread. (706 characters)

This is a very nice beer, looks deep amber-brownish with a one finger white foam head. Smells citrusy. Tastes bitter and fresh, nice grainy aftertaste. I really liked it. Cheers! (178 characters)

Wonderful amber color. two finger of thick white-yellow head. Smell was light with hints of hops and wheat. Taste was full of grains, wheat, hops. Although not as strong as I was expecting considering the "Ruthless" in the title. Feel was nice. The hop and grain taste stayed a few moments.

Overall I enjoyed this beer, wish it was a little stronger in taste but it was still solid. (384 characters)

From bottle to snifter. Yields a finger of light beige sudsy head, with poor retention and lighter lacing walls. Pale and darker orange with some amber. Not overly aromatic, but peppery rye is present immediately, followed by spiciness. Tastes quite piney, with rye lingering for a while after sipping. Some citrus notes, and sweet malted backbone. Feels medium bodied, and slightly slick. Medium/low carbonation and well balanced. Very pleasant beer with a beautiful rye finish. I thoroughly enjoy all SN beers and this is no exception. Will buy again. (553 characters)

Very tasty rye IPA. The best part for me is the mouth feel if I leave it linger for a bit; the time in the mouth gives time for the rye fullness to be noticed. (159 characters)

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. Pours with a large, cream colored head. It is amber in color and very murky. Small particles are floating throughout the entire beer. Has slight spice aromas from the rye and citrus aromas from hops. Overall aroma is not too strong and is not very impressive. Initial taste is of a combination of grains and citrusy hops. Rye quickly follows and adds to the initial taste. After taste leaves a slight bitterness as IPAs usually do. Unlike most IPAs I have experienced, however, this one does not leave a dry finish in my mouth. Well done. (585 characters)

From a 12 oz bottle into a snifter

Burnt orange in color with 1 finger of white foam and minimal lace left behind.

Smell is pine with nuts and fruit mixed in. The fruit may be a pineapple or light Curtis. It's just fain enough to be non spacific.

Taste is a hit different from smell. This has a nice rye at the start with some great toasted malty flavor. It finishes with a bit if sweetness and a ton of bitter hops. It's a very pleasing balance if your a hop fan.

Feel and drinkability are spot on. It's smooth and balanced with flavors that hit hard and last for more than a min on the tongue. No booze or overwhelming bitterness. Great for my palate. (660 characters)

Pours a clear amber with lightly off white head with good amount of lacing. Smells of floral hops, citrus, a bit of pine. Tastes sweet malt forward, mid tastes of pleasant pine/citrus hops (without being bitter), Pleasant rye, bitter endnote with clean, almost astringent, palate cleansing finish. Medium bodied with good amount of carbonation. ABV well hidden and overall very smooth.
Overall, an excellent Rye IPA. Smooth, hoppy flavor without the bitterness – more floral and well balanced. (499 characters)

A: Great white head that settles (laces a little).
S: a pineapple/hoppy wild flower.
T: a wonderful toasted malt then a malt flavor ending in a clean hoppy taste.
M: A solid rye front and ending in a solid HARD hop taste.
O: It has the hit of rye up front, shortly after a heavy ale, and ends with a solid IPA KICK. A definite easy drinker for IPA fan, but enough IPA to keep us coming back when we want less than a IPA/dipa. (425 characters)

Poured from 12 oz. bottle to pint glass.

A: Pours a deep orange to amber appearance. Slightly hazy, with a 1 finger white head.
S: A nice amount of pine. A little rich blood orange smell. Some dark berry scent as well.
T: Slightly piney, with accompanying grapefruit lingering bitterness. A little taste I can't put my finger on, maybe the rye.
M: Medium, with a creamy texture.
O: Not bad. Pretty drinkable. (410 characters)

12 ounce bottle into signature pint glass, bottled on 12/4/2014. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy deep orange/copper color with a 2 finger dense and rocky off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, floral, grass, spicy rye, light caramel, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/pine hops and moderate rye/bready malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, floral, grass, spicy rye, light caramel, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Good amount of pine/grassy bitterness and rye spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon/orange zest, pine, spicy rye, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice balance, robustness, and complexity of citrus/pine hops and moderate rye/bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, fairly crisp/sticky, and lightly creamy/bready mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent rye IPA style. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/pine hops and moderate rye/bready malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering. (1,581 characters)

I little disclaimer, I actually REALLY enjoy this beer but something about Rye beer in general doesn't agree with me so I avoid it at all costs. Hence the reason I affectionately refer to this beer as "Ruthless Flatulence". (224 characters)

The rye balances nicely with the hops. The hops are strong but not bitterly so. The rye adds a nice depth to the taste at the end so it isn't all hops all the way. (165 characters)

A - Orange, clear, bright, white head, lots of lacing.

S - Spicy, bright, grassy.

T - Very strong grass and spice, peppery, malty back. Subtle bitter close.

M - Feels brisk, good carbonation, closes pretty clean.

O - Strong, bold IPA, spicy with rye, but not unpleasantly so. (280 characters)

Pours in to a New Belgium tulip with a semi-transparent roasted orange color. The thin tan head lingers for a bit, then disappears with minimal retention and little appreciable lacing. The aroma is a balanced assortment of citrus, caramel sweetness and hints of dank earthy spice. The flavors follow suit, with a nice complex mix of delicious caramel, orange zest and peppery, earthy grain. The finish really highlights the inclusion of rye. Fairly balanced, with the bitterness held in check by the flavorful malts. The body of the beer is great. Juicy, moderate and satisfying, with a perfect level of carbonation. Very well done. Overall, the rye really adds some fantastic depth to the style. Carefully selected complimentary flavors and a keen sense of balance make this one a winner. Another score for Sierra Nevada. These guys really can't miss. (852 characters)

Appearance: Reddish Amber color, clear, half inch head that faded to a quarter inch, but laced the glass nicely.
Smell: Piney, spicy smell, with some malty notes.
Taste: The malt seems pretty prominent, but there's a nice nice underlying piney bitterness and a spicy flavor from the rye in there as well.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, pretty crisp finish.
Overall: I can hardly wait for this beer to come out every year, one of my favorite SN beers. The sum of the parts really add up well to come tougher in a great beer. (518 characters)
