Served in a standard Pint Glass

A- Pours a very nice amberish color with a nice looking white head. Head dissipates and leaves a nice amount of lacing throughout. Very attractive beer.

S- Nose of this beer is a little subdued but has seems to have a very balanced smell. Neither hop, nor malt seem to dominate the smell. It definitely has a little rye spice to the nose.

T/M- Very well balanced beer. Hops, Malt, and the perfect spice from the Rye. Extremely drinkable with a medium body. Very difficult to detect any alcohol.

O- Such an amazing beer. Perfectly balanced, and soooo easy to drink. I wish this was a year round brew for SN! (642 characters)

Ruthless Rye certainly has the look down; a body that mixes brown, orange and red is crowned with a towering head of light tan foam that has ridiculous retention and leaves behind some great lacing.

The aroma has a big dose of citrus, is a little bit spicy and has notes of caramel as well. Ruthless Rye is bright and citrus-flavored immediately, bringing the hop profile that I have come to expect from Sierra Nevada. Grapefruit, orange, hints of resin and just a touch of pine combine with considerable bitterness. The spicy, almost peppery rye flavors are noticeable without being overwhelming, with a little bit of caramel and even some powdery cocoa to back it up.

Slightly oily on the tongue with a fairly full body for an IPA. Ample carbonation gives a smooth and creamy feel.Ruthless Rye is a hoppy beer with rye in the background. If you like Sierra Nevada's other hoppy beers, then you will dig this one if you like rye. (932 characters)

Pours orange with a patchy off-white head. Ridges and chunks of foam cling to the glass. The aroma is a wonderful mix of fruity, juicy hop notes with emphasis on the grapefruit. The taste is of grapefruit, peach and floral hops intertwined with a doughy malt base and a little bit of rye (or hop?) spiciness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and lightly carbonated. bitterness but also malts linger in the long finish.

This is a great IPA. Lots of hop nuance and great balance with malts. I highly recommend this quaffable stuff. (528 characters)

Poured from a bottle into a dimpled beer mug. The bottle said 2013.

A-Pale to medium amber in color, with a deep orange hue. It poured a tan, bubbly, almost creamy 2 inch head. The head dissipated to a lovely foamy and thin surface. Sticky lace on the the glass throughout consumption. Nice lookin beer!

S-Earthy, piney, hoppy, and a touch of malt, perhaps some rye, too. I could really smell the American fresh hops.

T-Again, earthy, piney, woody, a touch of spicy rye, and the fresh, bitter hops were complemented by the sweet caramel malt. This brew reminded me of picking up a bunch of pine needles and a chunk of sticks and earth, and turning them into beer (not that I've done that before). It's a down-to-earth beverage. Nice bitter aftertaste that lingers the whole time I nursed it. Great dry feeling in the aftertaste as well. Great balance!

M-Crisp, fresh, and a full bodied brew with a light body feel! Very sessionable! Moderate carbonation.

Overall, I'd say the name says it all: Ruthless. This beer is a perfect February beverage. I have more in my fridge to enjoy, and I will buy more of them during this "tumultuous transitiion to spring!"

Cheers! (1,174 characters)

Very impressed with this rye ale from Sierra Nevada. I haven't had much experience with rye ales at the time of writing this review , but i must say this one has to be one of my Favorites so far. Poured from a bottle into a tulip glass and noticed a nice creamy head that leaves a wonderful lacing on the glass while drinking. The Two flavors that stood out the most to me were white pepper and grapefruit. The carbonation is perfect and has a great mouth texture. Can't go wrong with this Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye !! (519 characters)

A - Deep dark amber beneath a finger of flimsy head and drools of lacing.

S - Big citrusy hops, grapefruit central, fresh warm rye bread.

T - Citrus and piney hop flavours, peppery rye bread, sweet caramel malt, solid but not overpowering bitterness. Great balance, beautiful flavours.

M - Smooth medium body, great carbonation.

O - Certainly lived up to my hopes, fresh straight from Chico refridgerated all the way to Australia. Sublime. I love rye IPAs and this one is pretty faultless. (493 characters)

Serving Type - Bottle

Apperance - Brown/tan, copper tint. 1/2 head that really died quickly. Nice lacing.

Smell - Hops, rye, caramel, sweet fruits like apple, orange and apricot. Bready, and malty. Smells really nice.

Taste - Hop bite up front with a mix of malts and rye. Very bitter at first, with some caramel and citrus fruits. Slight warmth from the alcohol. Tons of pine mixed with some added molasses and brown sugars adds alittle sweetness, but lots of bitterness from the hops.

Mouthfeel - Tounge gets hop bittered at first sip with pine resin, caramel and some sweet sugars. Palette is bittered also, and coated with malts and rye. Aftertaste is bitter, dry and piney as hell.

Overall - What a amazing beer to come out after celebration ale. Its almost like they get your ready for hops with the citric bite of celebration. This brew is even more piney, bitter and bolder. This beer is ruthless on your tounge and palette. Im shocked at how hoppy this beer turned out. Might be a little much for some, but the addition of rye mixed with the hops really make this a intense yet flavorful and enjoyable beer. Welcome to the seasonal lineup, fantastic beer! (1,170 characters)

The beer appeared a nice, clear darkish orange with a huge off white, dense head, which settled into a rocky head that hung around for a long time. Some nice lacing. The beer gave off a good aroma, mainly with a very strong pine hop aroma with the rye in the background. There also appeared to be a hint of spice as well. The taste of the beer was more balanced than I thought it would be. A nice bready and rye with a slightly more dominate pine and citrus hop taste. The beer had a moderate feel to it, it was clean, creamy, and it left a nice dry and refreshing finish. Overall, another quality beer from this quality brewer. (628 characters)

A- Poured into a dogfish head snifter. This beer has a sticky head that lasts for days. Copious amounts of lacing down the glass that sticks like glue. Deep copper red color, bright crystal clear. Beautiful.
S- Spicy. Touch of citrus hops, slightly earthy and grassy.
T- " ", crisp and fresh, pumpernickel bread taste. Touch of citrus from hops almost resinous, grainy.
M- Medium but crisp. Bright
O- Wow, I'm in love. I am quite partial to rye beers as it it but this one is amazing. From presentation to taste it is both appealing and tasty. Would recommend highly. (568 characters)

Poured from 12 oz. bottle into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a clear and deep copper amber orange with lots of fast rising bubbles. Huge white head giving about five fingers. Very good retention and lots of lacing around the glass. Looks great.

Smell: Big aroma of pine resin hops leap out. Very dank. Also a good amount of rye adding to the spice. Some good hints of citrus hops and sweet bready malts lingering in the background. The spicy pine and rye stand out the most here. Smells very fresh and good.

Taste: A big taste of very nice spice and bitterness. Oily pine resin hops up front with a nice kick of spicy rye. Good notes of citrus grapefuit and orange. A sweet bready presence of malts emerges towards the finish to balance out the bitterness. Very good tasting.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Crisp, chewy, and finishes dry from the big hop presence.

Overall: A very good new add to Sierra Nevada's lineup. Very spicy and bitter, so much so that it seems like a double IPA. That is a good thing to me. (1,077 characters)

I have never heard of this beer and cant find any info on it. I am really suprised and excited about this new release from SN.

It pours a really pretty sunset amber with almost no head lingering. As I smell the beer the first thing I notice is how crisp the hop smell is, lots of zesty citrus aromas with a similar to sprite aroma. I love the hop combination on this beer, not sure what the hops are but they are great. The rye is a great spicy backround note and lends a nice fresh loaf of bread note. The mouthfeel is the classic sierra nevada mouthfeel, chewy but not long lasting on the bitterness. Overall I really like this beer, it is crisp and clean while still intriguing to the palate. Cheers. (705 characters)

2012 Release

Appearance: A nice amber color with a decent light tan head that dissipates at a moderate pace leaving good lacing

Smell: A very aromatic brew, consisting of spicy rye and piney, resinous hops

Taste: Starts off with some resinous hops, then moves to some rye spice, then a little pine hops, finishing with a little bit of malt sweetness

Mouthfeel: Full carbonation, light to medium body

Overall: An excellent brew from Sierra Nevada. I'm rather happy to have it in my fridge right now! (503 characters)

Orangish-brown in color with excellent clarity. Poured with a stiff, rocky foam that never disappeared (do I drink too fast?) and left chunks of sticky foam on the glass. An interesting and complex combination of rye bread, tangy citrus and light pine hop aromas that allow just a touch of maltiness to sneak through. Medium bodied with a thick smooth feel. Much like the aromas the flavors are complex and very unique. The first flavor that hit was like the first time I bit into a rye bread seed, a bit spicy and grainy. A combination of ripe citrus and light pine hop flavors followed with a sweet caramel malt backbone fighting through. The more I try beers with rye malt the more I wonder why it isn’t more common. Finished semi-dry with a light spicy, pine hop bitterness. (780 characters)

A: Poured a nice burnt copper color with a big thick two plus finger head. It stuck to everything and laced the entire drink.

S: Spicy, spicy with giant herbal and piney hops jumping out. The rye kick is noticeable even here. Maybe even a hint of pineapple hiding in there.

T: Immediately the rye hits with a spicy smack. Layers of malt back it up going from light toast to a quick hint of burnt grain cracker. But you gotta be fast to catch it because the hops come in fast with huge amounts of pine and herbal flavors. I get the pineapple again here in the back before everything ties up with a serious bitter smack in the face that almost makes me pucker.

M: Medium with a syrupy quality and a slight bit of fizz that accent the spice.

O: Great beer. Just loved this one. Had two more on separate occasions and felt the same. The spicy kick of rye and piney/herbal hops combo just kills it for me. I am buying more and hoping it becomes a regular offering. I can see how this flavor combo is too much for some but for me it works. (1,037 characters)

A- THis beer puors with a nice, deep amber body with a crisp line of white head that leaves somewhat quickly

S- Lots of spice a pepper on the nose with a big burst of hop aroma

T- Just like the nose, lots of robust pepper. This has a earthy taste as well coming from the rye grains and a clean, somewhat smooth hope finish on the end.

M- Crazy mouthfeel on this is one! It's medium bodied and ver tingly which lasts as long as it's in your mouth.

O- Totally love this beer. I liked it last year and it just keeps getting better. Wonderful taste. Fairly sessionable. Fantastic IPA.

A - Pours a coppery color with a cream colored head about half an inch high. Nice retention and gorgeous patchy lacing make this one a looker.

S - The first thing I notice isn't rye, but pine resin and citrus zest. Rye is further back, pleasantly fruity and prickly.

T - The rye is much more noticeable in the flavor, but not to be understated is a certain bready malt quality. Very bitter, intimidating hop character, but I love that kind of stuff.

M - Sorta dry, very fine carb.

O - I think I may have found a new favorite from Sierra Nevada. (548 characters)

Beautiful clear copper with two fingers of off-white head, great retention. Lots of lacing.

Apples, citrus, bread, caramel, some slight tropical notes. Kinda reminds me of sticky buns.

Sweet breadiness upfront, then citrus hop flavors with a long firm bitterness that transitions to a dryness that I attribute to the rye. Quite tasty.

Definitely on the lighter side of medium with medium carbonation. Just right and it accentuates the flavors.

Pretty damn good, one of the better rye beers out there. (505 characters)

Pours a pretty golden amber color that's a shade usually seen around sunset. Not much in the way of head, but the carbonation is lively. Aroma of spicy rye malt and sharp, floral hops, with notes of grass and a light caramel sweetness. Palate is hop forward with a nice sharp, spicy note from the rye. The flavors become more balanced and mellow on the swallow, with a hint of orange peel and caramel malt helping to offset the considerable bitterness, which lingers for a while on the finish. Body is lively and a touch creamy, a great vehicle for the flavors on display here. (582 characters)

Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye IPA has a thick, creamy, off-white head and a mostly clear, copper appearance, with lacing, streaming bubbles, and some fine particulate matter (I’m guessing it’s yeast) floating about at the bottom. The aroma is strong, and one gets heavy citrus (grape fruit), sweetness, and some bread, and the taste is mostly citrus, sweetness, and bread. Mouthfeel is medium and soft, and the finish is easy-going and mostly dry. Overall, this is a most excellent beer.

I really enjoy this beer. the only other Rye ale I've had is Hop Rod which I also like but have not seen in ages.

It's a coppery light brown with a nice head and an orange cast if held to light. There is a hint of rye in the smell but not as much as in the taste; a pleasant clean hop aroma is more pronounced. It tastes amazingly like a slice of good rye bread. If you like rye and american pale ales you can't go wrong with this beer. I would warn that if you're not a fan of rye you probably won't like this. It's a great beer with food but eminently drinkable on its own.

Overall, I give it very high marks but, again, it's probably not for everyone. (659 characters)

Bottle code 135011147. Taste is slightly spicy with a nice hop citrus presence. Pretty much delivers completely on the promise that is made on the bottle. Normally I don't put too much attention to the label as it is normally the liquid that matters the most but I really, really love the way that this label (and Celebration does this for me too) puts you in another place and transcends you before you even take the first sip. Genius. As for the liquid...crisp, clean, hoppy, spicy, delicious. It's from Sierra Nevada, what did you expect? (541 characters)

Poured this 12 oz. bottle into a Sam Adams glass. The body was the color of a bright penny. The head was pillowy and light tan leaving moderate lacing.

The smell was earthy and spicy. Organic, weedy aroma. Rotting leaves (in a good way). Aroma blooms as it warms, very nice.

The taste was peppery with a light sweetness. Grassy, hops bitterness and rye spiciness. Tobacco leaf. Finishes dry. Allowing this beer to warm a bit really benefits both the aroma and flavor.

The mouthfeel was softly prickly with a medium body. Finishes rather smoothly. Incredibly drinkable beer. (579 characters)

A - Poured a nice caramel color out of a bottle. It had great head retention and the lacing went down the whole glass.

S - This is a nice spicy beer. It had notes of rye, grapefruit, and caramel.

T - Great mouthful feeling with a full taste. The rye is noticeable and backed up with grapefruit hops.

M - Great consistency.

O - Great beer highly recommend (358 characters)

Pours filtered crystal clear into a pint glass with a full inch of foamy off-white head; beautiful red-brown beer with enough carbonation to replenish the head. Strong lacing on the glass. Rich spicy aroma from the rye; piny hops with hints of floral and tropical fruit notes. Guava smells more prevalent as it warms.

Rich spicy malt flavor is first as piny hops fill the nose. Then the hops are on the tstebuds: pine and citrus (grapefruit and lemon) with hints of musty guava skin and flesh. Ends dry and sightly astringent. Long drying hop finish.

This is a wonderfully tasty, spicy, hoppy new beer from Sierra Nevada, and one of few that has really lived up to the hype from the first-gen independents for me in a while. Can't wait to try it on tap. (755 characters)

Ruthless rye IPA pours a dark copper color, with a nice sized lacy head. There is a very nice dry hoppy aroma. There is a very nice hoppy taste, that finishes with a strong dry bitter flavor. The taste is very strong, but I would want another one of these. Overall this is a very good beer, a nice hoppy dry taste, there is something else in there that I cant put my finger on it, but a fantastic winter beer. (409 characters)
