12oz bottle purchased at Jim’s Homebrew in Spokane for $1.54. Label art is sort of a cross between vintage breweriana and Children of the Corn.

Pours a dark shade of amber, taking on a more orangey hue when held up to light. Big, fluffy off-white head tht took it’s time dropping, leaving lots of lace on the sides of my glass.

Hoppy, and yet surprisingly malty in the nose. I suppose that’s the rye malt making its presence felt.

The flavor of piney hops is perfectly matched by the rye malt’s sweet yet spicy, bready taste. In fact the hops are so closely matched by the malts, this could almost be considered a pale ale by my taste buds, were it not for the richness of the flavor.

Medium bodied, with a resiny yet slightly prickly mouthfeel.

A very drinkable beer, and one I wish I had more of right now. Tastiest beer I’ve drank all week

Appearance: Ruthless Rye IPA pours a Copper-to-burgundy colour along with a beige crown which doesn't stay for long but rather dissolves into the brew below.

Smell: Upfront acridity, pine, resin, you name it -- it's got it! For those familiar with Surströmming (fermented herring), it's got that sour smell to it, despised by a many, but loved stronger by the few! Local patriotism beside, vinegar could be a fitting description as well. Obviously some rye bread springs to mind, that somewhat sweet, yet sturdy characteristic with an almost apple-like sweet 'n' s' sourness to it.

Taste: A raisin-like sweetness is the first thing to strike the taste buds, furthermore a bready maltiness comes forth. Yet, they are both overpowered by a poignant and spiky zestfulness- accompanied by spicy bombardments. However, the last thing to strike the tongue is a metallic taste, and that's never a good thing in my book.

Mouthfeel: Really creamy, medium full body with an alert carbonation.

Overall: Nice, and a bit more rustic than your average AIPA. Other than that, above the cut, but not cream of the crop.

Here's to a four day weekend. I feel like a picked a very good beer to kick it off.

The reddish brown color is perfect for this rye-PA. The foam on top was very light with big bubbles. It died down pretty quickly.

I like the hoppy top on this beer. It blends perfectly well. There is a great dose of flowery and grapefruit.

The flavor wasn't as balanced as the nose. The rye is very present, but it doesn't work very well with the hop flavor. And the bitterness makes sense based on the style, but it doesn't exactly play well.

This is a good beer. I like that Sierra Nevada took a risk with rye.

355ml bottle. ½ Pint glass. Enjoyed on apr´12. Pours orangish deep amber in color & quite crystal clear appearance. White, close & creamy, lasting crown. Moderate mildy malt to the nose while intense citric hop with piney touch completes underneath the aroma profile. Slightly grainy & spicy flavor, subtle resiny notes.Gentle bitterness. Flavorful medium body, soft carbonation. Rye provides a funny dry finish rounded by smooth hoppiness .Fruity hues on the aftertaste. Well balanced, refreshing & drinkable. Expect an odd beer not just a regular American IPA.

Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye IPA pours a deep copper color, topped by a big off-colored white head and decent lacing. Soft citrus notes quickly give way to peppery aromas and hints of rye. As with the nose, citrus hop flavors open up the pallet before being overtaken by spicy rye flavors. The rye starts mellow at first but slowly rises throughout the finish. Medium bodied and carbonated, Ruthless Rye is an interesting take on an IPA, and was much better then we were expecting (we are not the biggest rye fans)!

Cheers!

Draft at Bj's Escondido.

A: Amber with a finger of beige foam. Lots of lacing is left behind. Nice color.

S: Pronounced rye bread with some biscuit. Hops impart a pleasant blend of pine, grapefruit, and orange with light floral notes. The aroma gives the impression of balance with a strong showing from both the hop and malt sides of the ledger.

T: Rye bread blends with biscuit and a balancing citrus hop presence. Lightly spicy. There's a little orange flesh with stronger grapefruit rind notes. The beer is almost balanced, but the hops have a slight edge, imparting a moderate bitter.

M: Medium body with upper medium carbonation.

Overall: A well crafted rye IPA.
