We pour a brew of rusty sunset orange. It holds a one finger white head. This recedes quickly, leaving huge aggregates of bubbles atop the liquid, and patterned lacing around the glass. There is thick haze, but no sediment, and carbonation appears medium. The aroma is of rye, barley, and faint metallic wheatiness. Soft piney hops, with earth and a deep pepper spice come up on the back. Raw celery root and coppery metallics round out the nose. Our first impression is that the rye flavoring blows up right from the start!! As we sip, huge rye comes out, with spice, mud, and pepper. Pine cone hops, with all their raw and earthy goodness, as in the nose, mix in from the beginning as well. The middle sees more citric hop bite, with more of the spice from the grain bill. The finish is sweeter, with honey, more floral hops, and lighter, paler malts. The aftertaste breathes of citric hop and rind, rye, barley, pale malts, earthy hop cones, and metals. The body is medium, and the carbonation is medium. Each sip affords nice slurp, cream, and froth, with a metallic biting slickness and light coating. This gives way to astringency of grain, with a very dry slickness to the last drops left in the mouth. The abv is appropriate, and this beer drinks great.

Overall, what we enjoyed most about this brew is the awesome rye inclusions. These complement and mix beautifully with the earthy, piney, citric hop bouquet. While this is such a fantastically balanced beers, and the flavors so robust, it might be hard to drink more than one or two of these back to back, as it is easy to see how it could become overwhelming. This is a fantastic beer, and not to mention, it has one of the coolest labels we’ve seen in a long time.

Seriously a good beer. It's not quite characteristic of a classic IPA, but that's ok. The bitterness from the hops does kick in at the end along with the alcohol, which does remind you that you're drinking an IPA. It's much more malty and the rhy really comes out in the smell and the taste. The smell is strong. Toasted rhy bread, with some grassy crispness. If you want a serious IPA don't go for this, but if you're looking for something a little unique, this has it.

I think that this also came to me courtesy of local IP trader, tone77. I will be relieved to finish off the last of my on-deck bottles so that I CAN return to The CANQuest (TM)!

From the bottle: "Ruthless Rye IPA is brewed with this rustic grain for refined flavors - combining the peppery spice of rye and the bright citrusy flavors of whole-cone hops to create a complex ale for the tumultuous transition to Spring."

I employed an aggro pour so as to release the aromatics and at the same time, create so much tawny head that there was a cascading action at the junction between the foam and the liquid. My strategy was sound as I ended up with just better than two fingers of head that resembled the top of an ice cream cone, plus the kitchen smelled like I had sprayed air freshener. It smelled of pine, mint and black pepper and my mouth was watering in anticipation. Color was a deep coppery-amber with NE-quality clarity. Mouthfeel was medium and the admixture of the rye and hops on the tongue was literally breathtaking. It tasted of pepper and fresh mint and was just beautiful! The heavy, sticky lacing that began to appear was going to need a hammer and chisel to remove. Finish was likewise dry and peppery-minty. Whew. What a way to open the day!

Pours a brownish orange color. A bit thin for something from SN. The head is thick and bright white. Good retention, it's got that classic IPA look where the top falls in on itself leaving a sticky lace in its wake.

You can smell it from across the room. It's all rye. Smells like a piece of rye bread is in a toaster.

I'll start by saying I'm not a fan of rye. I don't care for it in beer and I don't have the tongue for Scottish style beers. I love this. You can taste the chocolate and caramel malts working in conjunction with the rye for a nice balance. It's very balanced until the finish where the hop flavors win out.

Early on it's not much of an IPA. It's got a heavy feel. Then towards the finish, the bitterness kicks in, it becomes lighter, and leaves a sticky coat of hops on the tongue.

Another classic from Sierra Nevada. It's easy to drink, it's got decent alcohol, it's not very expensive. There's nothing not to like.
