APPEARANCE: Dark brown, almost a dirty, reddish-brown. A white and half-inch thick head tops it and hangs in fairly well. Lots of bubbles quickly shooting to the surface from the bottom of the glass. Excellent lacing.

SMELL: When I first stuck my nose in I got a lot more rye, but upon my second smell the roasted (and burnt) malt dominated. The roasted smell also gives it a coffee quality.

TASTE: Roasted malt and a rye breadiness dominate. I don't get much in terms of hops, maybe a touch of lemon and maybe grapefruit, but no pine or resin. The malt and rye remain at a fairly constant level throughout the sip.

MOUTHFEEL: The Ruthless has a pretty solid sparkle and it is clearly well carbonated. That said, it should cleanse the palate a little better than it does. Instead, there is a sticky, but dry film left that doesn't do much for me.

OVERALL: I love Sierra Nevada and maybe I am grading this one on an unfair curve because of the high bar they have already set for themselves, but I was excited about this one and I am finding myself underwhelmed. Maybe since this was the first year there is still room for improvement in the future.

12oz bottle. Served in a snifter. Bottled 1/31/12.

Pours hazy chestnut with about 1 finger head that leaves occasional small dots of lacing.

Dank hop aromas up front. Pine, sugar and some sort of malty/ bready smell I can't put my finger on.

Tastes like piney hops and spicy roast bread. Kind of doughy with a long bitter finish. The hops are present the whole way through but never really dominate the flavor how I prefer in an IPA.

Medium bodied with medium carbonation.

Overall not a beer I'll be going to in the future but I'm glad I tried it. The hops are there but seem to play second fiddle to that bold peppery malt thing it has going on.

Recently picked up a six-pack of this brew: really excited to have a (potentially) good year-round rye available in these parts in addition to Red's Rye. Here's to hoping this one fits the bill.

Pour is light copper, scattered carbonation & a healthy baby head. Nose promises good things. Light rye & accompanying spiciness, wry hops, slight breadiness. Not a bad way to start an experience.

Ruthless Rye is on the doughy end of the rye spectrum. Rye bread knots dominate the taste, with a dusting of light spices in the flour. Bitter hops that slip from earthy to piney light up the middle of a pull, then an unexpected slap of roast & pepper mixes with the other stuff to form a nice, lively back-end. Very lively, & a pleasure to sip. Quickly.

This isn't the grand slam I was hoping for, but I'll take a rye double into the corner any time. Very good rye that really pulls all the ingredients together into a spicy, hoppy, tasty whole. I'll come back to this one again, my favorite Sierra Nevada regular offering to date.

A: The beer is clear copper in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high frothy and dense light beige head that died down but consistently left a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface and lots of lacing running down the sides of the glass.
S: There are moderately strong aromas of pine resin hops in the nose along with notes of citrus hops and hints of peppery spices.
T: The taste is rather bitter with spicy flavors from the rye and pine resin flavors from the hops. There are also hints of the underlying caramel and pale malts.
M: It feels medium-bodied and very crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is very tasty has an interesting mix of piney, spicy and citrusy flavors.

Pretty excited to try this. Heard good things. 12 oz bottle. Bottled on Jan 3rd.

A: Pours a big light beige frothy head, huge head. Appearance is a clear light brown/deep copper. Leaves excellent lacing, almost a sheet. SN always nails this aspect of a brew.

S: Very hoppy, like an IPA, mix of citrus and tropical, pineapple, a touch of maltiness/bread. Aromatic for ABV.

T: Taste is a peppery, citrus hoppyness up front. Some lemon, pine, grapefruit all come through. Then get hit with the rye/malts. Finishes with a leathery/rye/spiceness. Must be the rye flavor. Finish is a bit rough with hints of dark cocoa. Not digging the finish. Flavors seem to mellow out as beer warms, seems backwards.

M: Well carbonated, slightly thin and seems rough on the mouth. Does have a hop oily-ness to it. Leaves the palate quite dry.

O: Definitely interesting, seems well crafted in that there's a lot of different flavors/notes going on. I just don't like the rye flavor I feel. The IPA part of it seems spot on. If you want a Rye IPA you wont be disappointed, even though I don't like it, I recommenced it, if that makes sense.

medium dark amber color with some lacing. Body is clear.
The nose is not as hoppy as i was expecting really, there is more spice notes and rye character then anything else going on.
The flavors taste more like a malty rye pale ale then an IPA, and this can not be old. Bready is a strong description, earthy hops, and rye spice.
mouthfeel is medium full with a low amount of carbonation.

I have to say, i was excited for this one, but it is probably one of my less favorite of the SN beers.

Potent but flawed Rye.
___

A: Clear, dark amber body with a fairly persistent, sudsy, yellowed two finger white head

S: Big noseful of resinous hops, rye spice, and buttery caramel malt. Very inviting.

T: Quite a lot of flavor, with sweet caramel malt dominating up front, passing through a nice helping of rye spice on the way to a drying, resinous hops finish, yet somehow, all is not perfect. There's a certain metallic holowness that's preventing the very nice flavors from shining.

M: Highly carbonated with a drying finish.

appearance - amber, transparent, generous off white head, good retention, medium lacing

smell - rye, malt, grass, hops

taste - nice hop profile mixed with some rye/wheat/grass notes, some citrus in there as well

mouthfeel - medium body, full carbonation, slightly dry finish

overall - could use a bit more hops to balance out the rye but it does well once it warms up especially
