Served on cask at Mugs Alehouse in Brooklyn, NY

A: Pours a slightly hazy golden amber with a finger tall light beige head. The head reduces to an extremely thin ring at the edges of the glass only. No lacing is observed.

S: Some spicy aromas from the rye (like hints of pepper) along with pine resin and citrus hops.

T: Slightly malty sweet (maybe caramel and pale) upfront that is quickly followed by the rye spiciness. There is some hint of pine resin from the hops but this beer has a nice lingering bitterness and spiciness.

M: Medium bodied with light amounts of carbonation.

O: Really a very nice beer and one that I will enjoy a few more times this year while it is available in the area. I'm a fan of the rye spiciness with the IPA hops.

Ah Sierra Nevada, always coming out with new beers and never letting me down. Always been a fan of the Rye style in beers so I was eager to try this one. A considerable amount of spiciness in the taste and a nice well balanced IPA. Packs quite a punch with a high ABV but the beer remains fairly smooth and has a nice mouthfeel. I'm usually a fan of most IPA's, and the rye is a nice touch.. really good beer and definitely worth trying.

Purchased: Gift from a friend

A: Clear, dark amber in color, with an off-white head 2 fingers high. Good head retention and very good lacing.

S: Big hop aromas of citrus and grapefruits, plus spicy and peppery smells from the rye malt.

T: Taste is dominated by hoppy bitterness, with citrus/grapefruit flavors and spicy rye. Caramel malts form a backbone to help balance the hops.

M: Medium in body with high carbonation. Aftertastes are spicy and bitter from the rye and hops.

O: Very good, thirst-quenching IPA from Sierra Nevada

A. Pours out a dark amber hue with a thick tan head that leaves some of the best lacing and retention of any sierra nevada beer I have tried.
S. The aroma is rye, citrus, pine and yeast
T. The taste starts out with some rye followed by the citrus and pine tastes of the hops and finishes off with more rye.
M. The mouthfeel is rather creamy, and smooth.
O. A very good tasting beer that is everything someone would expect from Sierra Nevada plus a whole lot more. Highly recommended.

pours out a very dark amber colour, slightly clouded with a very light tan frothy head. it sticks and stays leaving some festive lace. aroma is a very unique combination of some very juicy hops...almost bubblegum like with a decent dose of spice and malt due to the rye used. this "ryePA" has a big dose of both rye spice and hop spice, but delicately balances between the two with flair. the maltiness has hints of rye spice, cocoa, nougat and caramel while the hop profile seems to be another hefty dose of juicy, tropical hop goodness that just seems to compliment the overall profile. bits and pieces of pine only add to spice profile, not to mention a residual alcohol burn/spice that seems appropriate in this IPA. add in the ample back end bitterness and this is a tongue tingling brew to be sure. the label states that this is complex, and i would agree, maybe overwhelmingly so. it's one spicy beer to be sure! full bodied for sure, with a mouthfeel that can be best described as coarse and unrefined. just about what you would expect from an IPA of this sort. i like the drinkability...it's interesting in its uniqueness.

overall i would consider this another winner from those hop whores at SN. as a spring seasonal it breaks conventional wisdom and definitely is more interesting than the pale bock that preceded this concoction. if you like your beers spicy, this one is ruthless.

Pours a beautiful amber/copper color with a substantial cream colored head.

Smells of citrus (mainly grapefruit with a hint of orange), a grain malt smell where rye can slightly be detected, and an earthy floral bouquet.

Taste up front is bitter herb with a rye nuttiness, followed by bitter and sweet grapefruit, then a touch of biscuity malt towards the end, but it is fleeting and brief in the dry finish. This is hop dominated and lively in the mouth, with just a hint of malt to keep it from total chaos. An excellent IPA and a wonderful use of rye. Also, one few beers where I can detect a full fleshy grapefruit flavor with the sweet grapefruit notes as well as the bitter.

A - Served with a copper body that had some clarity...a fluffy, white, two finger head formed and stuck around for a while leaving decent lacing

S - Grapefruit and other citrus aromas from the hops...spicy rye balances the sweetness and adds some graininess to the nose

T - All the flavors match the nose pretty close...the citrus flavors are sweet and juicy...the hops are very present in this beer...rye comes in and takes off the sweet edge while adding some body to the beer...there is a spiciness mixed with a grain presence...even a touch of caramel...the hops come back and pair with the spice to leave a spicy-sweet bitterness

M - Medium bodied...creamy and smooth...spicy, sweet, bitter

O - There was a great deal of balance in this beer...the sweetness was kept in check as well as the addition of the rye...a very pleasant offering from the guys at Sierra Nevada

A dollar a bottle at the pharmacy, couldn't resist a cheap Sierra Seasonal.

Deep red with a decent head that stuck around for a minute or two. Little bit of lace on the glass which is always nice.

Smells like peppery grapefruit. Breads and hops mixing together nicely.

Taste is exceptional for me, since I'm not the biggest rye beer fan. Nicely hoppy, slightly bitter and a great aftertaste. I can't smell or taste any alcohol at all, which is interesting since it's 6.6%.

Feels great, you'll like this if you enjoy hops but don't like the bitterness sticking around in the back of your throat for too long.

Another good mass beer from Sierra Nevada, give it a try if you see it at a decent price.

A - Deep dark amber beneath a finger of flimsy head and drools of lacing.

S - Big citrusy hops, grapefruit central, fresh warm rye bread.

T - Citrus and piney hop flavours, peppery rye bread, sweet caramel malt, solid but not overpowering bitterness. Great balance, beautiful flavours.

M - Smooth medium body, great carbonation.

O - Certainly lived up to my hopes, fresh straight from Chico refridgerated all the way to Australia. Sublime. I love rye IPAs and this one is pretty faultless.
