A: Clear, dark amber in color, with an off-white head 2 fingers high. Good head retention and very good lacing.

S: Big hop aromas of citrus and grapefruits, plus spicy and peppery smells from the rye malt.

T: Taste is dominated by hoppy bitterness, with citrus/grapefruit flavors and spicy rye. Caramel malts form a backbone to help balance the hops.

M: Medium in body with high carbonation. Aftertastes are spicy and bitter from the rye and hops.

O: Very good, thirst-quenching IPA from Sierra Nevada

"Rye has been a staple grain for milennia-sought after for its stubborn resilience in the field and revered for its unique flavor, Ruthless Rye IPA is brewed with rustic grains for refined flavors- combining the peppery spice of rye and the bright citrusy flavors of whole-cone hops to create a complex ale for the tumultuous transition to Spring." Sierra Nevada's spring seasonal returns for 2013, released annually around January-February. Brewed in the style of an American Rye IPA.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle to a Sierra Nevada pint snifter. Served north of 49º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Beer pours a frothy caramel-tinged white head of a fluffy cream consistency. Body color is a copper orange with mild sediment, a light haze and very low visible carbonation. Lacing is consistently light and curtained, retention is slightly above average. Head quality could improve a notch but otherwise this beer delivers well in appearance. 3.75

(Smell) Most noticeable is a moderate peppery bread note of rye for a full sweetness. Light citrus and floral hop notes compliment the malt profile, although they do not provide enough potency to challenge the specialty malt-centered beer. Additional notes of lightly toasted caramel, cracker malt for lightness, and a touch of fruity and spicy yeast esters, like raisin and nutmeg peek through as the beer warms. The potency is medium. Pleasant aroma overall, despite not being overly confident in the hop department. 3.25

(Taste) A nip of biscuity grain malt and citrus pith up front with a proceeding peppery rye midsection and a peppered, dry and boldly bitter finish with a dragging faint viscosity of rye sweetness to compliment. Although the hop flavor diversity has waned, this beer has otherwise held up remarkably well through the year. There's substantial bitterness and malt complexity to enjoy, yet the profile is quaffable enough to enjoy several in a single session. 3.75

(Mouthfeel) Mild slickness and a mellow stickiness build a subtle malt texture. Carbonation is busy, sharp and excited, very prickly on the tongue. Alcohol presence is low. Body is a medium for an American Rye IPA, and medium overall. The carbonation seems too aggressive for this beer. 3.5

(Overall) Sierra Nevada puts out a very tasty and flavorful, yet clean and easy drinking Rye IPA in Ruthless Rye. Chock full of clean, flavorful rye and a moderate thickness, this is a worthy drink for your IPA money, and a fair representative for the rapidly growing Rye IPA trend . 3.75

12oz, bottled late December 2011.

Pours a clear, attractive reddish amber, very brilliant. Head is creamy, with great retention all the way down.

Aroma is of spicy, earthy hops.

The flavor is full and malty, with a solid dose of bitterness and hops. Oily on the palate, with some rustic, tangy Rye notes that complement the spicy and woody hop flavor. The mouthfeel is well carbonated and smooth. Man, has Sierra Nevada perfected their bottle conditioning. Drinkability is above average for an IPA-style specialty grain beer.

Definitely an interesting IPA, though I think there could be even more hop flavor while still retaining the rye character.

12oz to pint glass
03/06/12 notes

A: Pours a dark amber color with some really great clarity. Thick two fingers of soapy tan head displays decent retention and leaves some chunky globs of lace down the glass.

S: The nose opens up very herbal and grassy with a predominant spiced bread aroma. Light caramelly pale malts and some fruity yeast esters.

T: Taste has a light citrus and floral hop character with a nice upper-moderate bitterness level. Bready caramel malt and a good amount of peppery rye spice. Some hempy herbals in there. Hops are a little soapy at times. I imagine they dry-hopped the hell out of this one. Nice offering but does dance the line of being a touch harsh with the hop and spice combo.

M: Creamy texture with a light frothiness is real nice. Light to med. body. Upper levels of carbonation. Real dry crisp finish to it.

D: I appreciate the fact that SN was not candid with the Rye here unlike some other RyePA's that have you searching. Might be a bit much for others I think. The rest is that signature citrus hop and bready malt combo not much unlike Torpedo.
I liked but will probably stick with the Torps.

Cheers to SN for keeping it hoppy!

The beer appeared a nice, clear darkish orange with a huge off white, dense head, which settled into a rocky head that hung around for a long time. Some nice lacing. The beer gave off a good aroma, mainly with a very strong pine hop aroma with the rye in the background. There also appeared to be a hint of spice as well. The taste of the beer was more balanced than I thought it would be. A nice bready and rye with a slightly more dominate pine and citrus hop taste. The beer had a moderate feel to it, it was clean, creamy, and it left a nice dry and refreshing finish. Overall, another quality beer from this quality brewer.

A: Brass colored with a one inch solid and thick head; lacing is good

S: Pine and citrus hops up front followed by a musty, spicy (even a touch of fish sauce aroma), grainy, and mmm does that rye complement the hops

T: Great balance between hearty spicy rye and piney, spicy hops; something that reminds me of Thai food here--I swear there's a touch of that ubiquitous Thai fish sauce flavor some where in this beer

F: Medium body with an oily residue that feels great

O: A pleasant, complex rye IPA: hoppy and grainy and man, that rye is good
