A: Poured from the bottle into a Sierra Nevada pint glass. Body is chestnut-amber, with mahogany hues on the edges, and a small khaki-colored head. Looks hazy, but when backlit it's clear. Decent sheets of lace on the glass.
S: Toffee and caramel malt and a touch of toasty grains. Some grassy or piney hops, but not too strong on the nose.
T: Sweet malt flavors up front: toffee, caramel malt, toast and rye bread. Mid-sip the hops take over, big time: grapefruit, orange peels, mint and pine. I like the interplay between the sweeter, malty tastes and the big, juicy hops. Finishes with a lingering juicy hop bitterness. 8% ABV is well hidden behind what appears to be a lot of malt and a ton of hops. Reminds me of Arrogant Bastard somewhat.
M: Medium in heft. Carbonation is fine-prickly.
O: Good stuff. Closer to a Strong Ale, I think, than an American Amber/Red, but SN calls this an Imperial Red, so I knew what I was getting myself into.
