12oz bottle into Duvel tulip. Part of the 2012 Beer Camp 12pack.
Appearance: Free pour yields a 2 inch offwhite head that dissipates slowly and (like the beer itself) leaves a ton of lacing. Pours a semi-translucent brownish dark red.
Smell: From the bottle: pungent hops. In the glass: Burnt sugar, mild hop pungency/dankness. Some tangy malt underneath.
Pretty low key, but good.
Taste: Dank hops and pastry malt flavors up front, then a surprising citrus hop burst at the end along with a toasted bread finish. High bitterness.
Definitely has the Citra melon and dank/herbal weed element, but without the orange / deep citrus flavor (or aroma). Lowish overall sweetness combined with the pastry flavors is weird in a way for which I can't find an analogy. Gets sweeter with warmth though.
Mild booziness. Combined with the malt, this lends an almost licorice like spice to the beer that I quite like. Hops remain mild dank up front and mild grapefruit in back, with well developed malt flavors throughout. Even though I'm not in love with it, the overall balance is very good.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied. Pretty creamy. Low side of moderate carbonation. Slightly dry finish. Compliments the malt well, but I feel like it should maybe be juicier or more carbonated with these flavors.
Overall: This is a high quality beer, but it takes a lot (or at least a just-right combination) to really wow me with an imperial red. Maybe if the hops were *way more* in your face (they're good, but rather subtle), or the malt flavors worked differently with the rest. I like the bitterness, and I don't detect any outright off flavors whatsoever. It's a good value, just not something I'd be inclined to buy very often.
