Poured from 12oz bottle into a dimpled mug.
Appearance: rich, dark amber hue with a touch of haze to the body. The head is a finger of frothy dark-ivory foam which dissipates somewhat quickly but leaves a nice lace on the glass. Pretty attractive.
Smell: toasty and biscuity malt base with a nice helping of earthy hops. A bit more biscuity than I like, but not too bad.
Taste: much like the aroma, it's got a classic red ale vibe, though leaning more on the biscuity side than I prefer. Hops have a more citrusy bent to them in the flavor, and the bitterness is somewhat strong, though relatively balanced with the high ABV and sweetness of the malt. Not bad, but not my taste.
Mouthfeel: medium body with a pretty significant carbonation and concomitant creaminess. I like it.
Overall: this is a pretty drinkable beer for an imperial-strength red ale. I feel like if the brewers had emphasized the toastiness and caramel character more than the biscuit, I would really love it.
