On tap at The Surly Goat in West Hollywood, CA.

Pours a clear orange with a foamy orange-tan head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, caramel, slight herbal hops, and alcohol. Taste is of malt, caramel, and herbal hops on the finish. There is an alcohol kick and a mild hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is pretty easy to drink but somewhat unrefined in my opinion.

4 oz. poured into a snifter at Churchkey. From notes.

A: Pours a dark copper color with great clarity. The head is a one finger slightly off white color with a thin, creamy-textured collar retaining to the side of the glass. Acceptable lacing given the serving circumstances.

S: Similar to a lot of barleywines I've smelled - but somehow it's not. Caramel and darker fruits abound, with an augmenting aroma of peppercorn, mint, smoke, pineapple, and slight oak. Me likey.

T: Quite mellow, but in a good way. The initial caramel sweetness gives way to a smoky, faintly leathery midtaste and a finishing mild pineapple character from the hops, along with some alcohol. Not the most complex barleywine, but solid.

M: Slightly thin for a barleywine, but it doesn't quite help bringing its drinkability level above 'slow sipper'. As in the flavor, alcohol is present, but well integrated in conjunction with its lower carbonation.

O: An interesting beer to try, without a doubt. I'd say it's about on par with SN's Bigfoot, meaning it's very good, but not great. Well worth a try, at least.
