Pours a orange-ish shade of gold. A bit darker than hoped for. Big fizzy white head. Sticks around for a bit but no lacing and fades entirely. Aroma is light. The main flavor that sticks out is a medicinal flavor that I'm not a huge fan of. There's also some earth, pale malt and a little funk. Mild grassy hops. Some brett fruitiness but very light. Taste is dry. There's a big earthy, fruity kick at first but it doesn't really go anywhere. Just a sort of nondescript Belgian tartness that dies quickly. It's a bit like taking a bite of an under ripe apricot - tart and fruity but lacking flavor. Mild hop bitterness in the finish. Very dry feel. Mildly chalky. Quite effervescent. It still has the over-carbonated feel that many brett beers seem to have in the bottle - could dissipate with time. It's a decent beer, which is a disappointment given the pedigree. The underlying Belgian just doesn't seem to be all that great. I wish that they had gone with something closer to Sanctification. This has too much malt depth and that medicinal note is too much. I'm going to sock away my second bottle and pray that something more develops given enough time.

Picked up the last bottle on the shelf because of Russian Rivers reputation despite the price ($16.00). Bottle opened with a pop like champange which kind of startled me. Very effervescent with a head that quicky disolved. Smell reminded me of my trip to Belgium especially the tour of the Cantillon Brewery. Very tart, dry but interesting taste. Enjoyable but I did not feel it was worth the price. Based on other reviews, I would pick up a another bottle at a reasonable price point and store it for a year.

750ml bottle into NB snifter.
A: Pours a slightly cloudy golden amber color with a huge, active, off-white head that steadily faded into a lasting film that left no lacework.
S: Dry, light, fresh and spicy nose. I get scents of vinous white wine, earthy brett, dry oak, peach, apricot, spicy hops, black pepper, and a hint of lemon zest. I get faint medicinal notes as it warms further.
T: Good but not as good as the nose. Earthy brett, peppery hops and yeast, spiced pear, straw/hay, lemon juice, clove, orange rind and dry oak come through along with a few medicinal notes of fruity phenols. The finish is has a light fruity sweetness to it, and the aftertaste is full of spice, earthy hops, and lingering brett.
M: Fizzy (ample) carbonation, not prickly but rather foamy and short-lived; medium-full body, and a chewy mouthfeel that I felt could have been lighter.
O: Not bad at all but nothing to get too excited over. A good brett beer but there are far better. Maybe a few years in the cellar will put some life into this beer.

On tap at the Russian River brewery. Pours a super cloudy and hazy yellow with a very nice white head around 1" in size, damn good lace and retention to it, very small bubbles.

Mild aroma, chunky fresh brett, really needs more time to get any funk, its not here yet, none of that wet dog in a phonebooth thing going. Double edged sword, sometimes I likes it clean, sometimes dirty. Some mild citrus aspects to it.

Taste, well it hides the alcohol nice, but is, I dunno, kinda pedestrian. A little lemon and grass in there, but really nothing in the way of real good tart or funk development. A little resemblance to belgian yeast esters in the mouthfeel. Really the description of a domesticated wild ale goes a long way, this one is in a weird spot, its price is high, which is going to seem to keep potential converts away, and for those who are already into this kind of thing, I dunno how apeshit people will go for this. Is it good? Yes. But its not knock your socks off spend $15 a bottle good. Nonetheless, yes, I am still holding onto a bottle to see what happens down the road.

I'd recommend to try, but don't buy more than one until you know whether this is your thing. For me, just so many more enjoyable options from both breweries that are so much cheaper.

A- Pours a very nice copper color, slight orange hues, looks very similar to what I see in some IPA's and IIPA's. Very good color in my opinion.

S- Smell is pretty lacking on this beer. It has some hints of citrus or sourness and tart, but overall just seems it is not as complex as I would expect, and just appears to be missing something.

T- Same thing I found on the smell, I get on the taste. The taste has hints of sour, faint tartness, and a finish that is slightly bready or yeasty. This beer just appears to be missing something, the Brett probably needs some more time to mature.

M- Mouthfeel is quite smooth, and overall very good, this is one of the best things about the beer, as it is quite lacking otherwise.

O- Overall a slight letdown for the price point, but going to let the my others get some age on them and revisit again. This has some great potential, but at this point it is just not living up to expectations.

Poured from the bottle into a standard pint glass.

Appearance: The beer pours a slightly cloudy amber color with a finger of fluffy off white head. The head fades to a ring around the pour rather quickly.

Smell: I'm getting some light malt along with a mild note from the brett.

Taste: As in the smell, this is a light, malt forward beer. Not sweet at all, just a strong note from the grain. I'm also getting some brett and a mild hint of citrus fruit. The finish is full of yeast.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with very prickly carbonation and a really dry finish.

Overall: This is a really young beer. I think it's going to be more sour over time. I'm glad I have another bottle hidden away.

"Fresh" baseline review.

Golden-orange color with several minutes' worth of off-white soapy head that leaves behind minimal lacing on the glass. Vigorous champagne-like carbonation bubbles over a light and buoyant body texture. It feels... summery.

Smells mostly of tart green apple, pears, lemon peel, and a dash of florals and Brett Yeast aroma / tiny amount of funk... Tastes primarily like a green papaya salad on top of a thin slice of raw rustic bread. There is also a touch of granny smith, herbals, and the Brux barnyard *is* present, albeit at very light and restrained levels...to the point that this brew could barely be considered "funky" at all, except to Brett neophytes who haven't jaded their palates yet.

In that regards, it could very well serve as a good introduction to light, accessible amounts of Brett for your friends... but if you are expecting a -challenging- Brett presence, you will be sorely disappointed. Time will only tell if this develops for the better in the cellar.

Pale straw yellow beer with a fizzy white head that dissipates completely. Smells of tart apples and pear. There a more faint wild yeast scent than I anticipated. Perhaps some aging would tone down the fruit and increase the funky barnyard smell I love. That said it is a very pleasant and appealing scent.

Taste is very clean crisp and dry. The apple is still strong, but a sharp clean dry finish is accentuated with a hop snap of flavor. The mouthfeel is lively and further contributes to the dryness. This would be an excellent pairing with almost any food due to the dry clean flavor, but lacks some depth and complexity. I'd be interested to see what it would taste like in a year, but I only have the single bottle.

750mL bottle poured into taster - thanks goon

Pours a lightly hazed golden yellow color with a thin white head resting on top. Fades into some spotty lacing with a wispy touch of retention.

Funky and tart in the nose with hints of fruit. Citrus peel and pear with a few notes of spice and yeasty funk. Relatively mild for my taste.

Snap of tart lemon and citrus peel up front. Yeasty funk with spice, pear and citrus. Slight sweetness and biscuit malt backbone with straw. Lingering spice, lemon and tartness in the finish.

Lighter medium body, well carbonated, dry and crisp on the tongue. This was decent, but when I hear "Sierra Nevada and Russian River are collaborating," I can't help but expect something really memorable.

A - Golden, minimally orange, with a solid lasting head

S - Fruity, with less funk than I expected based on previous reviews

F - Fruity nose quickly gives way to brett and mild hops. Not really tasting the grass so much, and not so tart as I like my sours.

M - Moderate to heavy carbonation gives way to a soft dryness.

Overall: tasty and quite complex. Admittedly, I love all sours and can't give them a bad review. That said I'm glad I tried it but probably won't buy again.

Bottled sometime early summer 2012, placed in cellar for one year. Served at fifty degrees, a gentle pour into a clean tulip glass produces a large three inch white head, which crackles away noisily towards the bright golden beer that lies beneath.

Smell of delicate fruit, lemon, grass and a slight earthy funk.

Mouth puckering and tart during the first sip, not very sour, this sensation is finished with the second sip. Dry and not overly complex, the taste is peppery with hints of grass and lemon, similar to the nose. A lingering astringency is present, tannins? This is not to be confused with the slight hop bitterness in the aftertaste. Characteristics of the brettanomyces are evident, earthy funk and gentle sourness.

This beer is on the thinner side, carbonation is spot on for the style.

I think Brux is successful, however, not worth its original price tag. Still see this on store shelves and the price has dropped. I may be inclined to pick up another bottle and see how it progresses with another year in the cellar. My advice to anyone that has been holding onto a bottle would be to give it time if you want more from the brettanomyces bruxellensis. For food pairing I would recommend pear tart or a Roquefort salad.

Russian River goblet

A: Pours out a slightly hazy light orange color. Initially I got a layer of bright white head that faded into a white ring. Tiny bubbles streaming up from the bottle conditioning.

S: Definitely get that Brett character on the nose: wet hay horseblanket type smells. Saison like for sure. Maybe some tart fruity notes.

T: Up front, you get some tart funkiness. It's not as crazy as as I was expecting. I want more Brett! Like others have mentioned, that might come out more with time. Middle of the mouth, some mild fruit: green apple, white grape, sweet orange peel maybe. Prickly carbonation really helps to keep this one on the lighter side. Don't taste that 8.3% at all. Close is dry, but not as mouth puckering as other traditional Saison or wild ales.

M: Medium bodied, but feels lighter. Nice hidden ABV.

O: B- to B. Maybe more time will help? Or more Brett in the batch.

Poured from a bottle into a snifter, the beer is a rose-tinted orange coloring, both opaquely clouded and steadily carbonated. A filmy ring and island of film decorate the surface of the brew. Aromas of fruit and floral blend together for an inticing funk. Currant, raspberry, lemongrass, jasmine, and many other characteristics blend together to assault the sense of smell. Flavors of citrus fruit and apples are first onto the palate, with a backbone of cloves and banana subtly in the background. The flavors almost lend themselves to a cider style of drink. Very light and effervescent in mouth, to the point of foaming if you move or swish at all with the tongue. There is an acidity feel and taste that touches the tip of the tongue initially, and also presents itself to the back of the tongue at the end of the palate. Pear and parsley/basil spicing in the aftertaste, with a filmy, quick, slightly frothed finish. Very unique and interesting beer, and much more mild overall than some other beers utilizing Brett. This would make a good transition for people new to Wilds, or even sours.

Appearance: Hazy, medium orange amber/peach colored, pours with a big, fizzy off-white head - keeps a nice little cap, but doesn't leave much lacing

Smell: Yeast and brett - spicy Belgian yeast, with barnyard aromas, band-aids, and some wet horse and hay - funky and lightly tart - light bread and some lightly toasted grains - some light fruits as well

Taste: So much yeast - kind of tastes more like a Belgian Saison than a wild ale - spicy yeast, clove, and yeasty funk - some barnyard elements, but mostly peppery yeast - light, grainy bread - lightly tart, with some apple skins, a wine-like dryness, with some alcohol

Mouthfeel: On the heavy side of medium, prickly carbonation, smooth, very dry

Overall: Good, but doesn't quite live up to the pedigree

Maybe this just needs some time to mature. Right now, it's good, but my adoration of both Sierra Nevada and Russian River leads me to believe that it should be better. Very yeasty, very dry, but not much else.

Bottle into tulip.

A- Slightly hazy, light orange pour. Two finger, fizzy snow white head. Head is short lived, deflating to a thin cap with minimal lacing.

S- Right off the bat you get whiffs of Brett, followed by sweet orange peel and a touch of lemon and grass. Slightly biscuity with a touch of tartness.

T- Brett again up front, it's enough to remind you it's there but not enough to overpower the sweetness and the tartness as well. Digestive cookies, lemons, orange rinds with a slightly grassy finish.

M- Light body, high carbonation as expected.

O- I can see why there are such mixed reviews on this beer; while it is good it does fall short in my honest opinion.

ST: Corked and caged bomber bought from Small Batch Liquors in Denver. Served chilled from the fridge in a 0.3 liter New Belgium tulip glass.

A: Rustic amber color with slightly hazy body. Highly carbonated but head is very transparent.

S: Sweet, lightly peppered smell, with a tart apple finish.

T: Distinct Brett Brux taste: tobacco, dry, and highly crisp (probably due to high effervescence). The body is very light and taste is pretty light in complexity.

M: Highly effervescent, crisp, and light bodied feel. Gains a leather complexion upon warmth.

O: A nice Brett-like beer. It might have been served too young, as bottle notes it gains distinct flavor upon age. I would casually recommend it, but not worth actively seeking.

Pour is highly carbonated. Light yellow with small white head. The smell is funky. touch of apple cider, white grape tannins. Even a hint of acetic sourness as well. This thing smells really good.

The taste is a let down. Chalky type taste with grassy dryness from the young Brett. The Brett flavors really need some time to grow and shine. I get that light dry citric grassiness characteristic of Brett, just not enough of it. Base beer is clean and crisp. With age, that will allow the Brett to shine.

All in all, it needs age. After a year of Brett growth, this thing will taste fantastic, just not yet.

Poured from 750ml bottle into Globe glass.

A. Pours a well carbonated 3 fingers of head that disappears quickly. Not much lacing, and retention is pretty fleeting. Color is a dark golden yellow.

S. Lemony, pear, some spices. Has quite a bit of yeast smell to it. Get a BSPA with a lot of the Brett notes thrown in.

T. Interesting. Pretty flavorful, but not in your face. Most of the flavors are more subtle. You get a hint of sour, banana, some clove, a little bit of pear. Some of the earthy yeast flavors are present as well.

M. Medium bodied. On the lighter side of medium. Pretty good carbonation.

O. Seems a little restrained at this point. Not sure if any of the flavors would intensify with this beer over time or not. I can see the Brett flavor becoming more pronounced, but maybe only that. Was kinda let down with this one.

Poured out of 1pt 9.4oz bottle into a snifter shaped ale glass

A-champagne head, with active bubbles and immediate head of over 4 fingers thick. Head gone within 1 minute. Copper color with an unfiltered look. No lacing whatsoever on the glass. No thickness.
S-pear and fig tones on the nose. Alcohol upfront. Light on the clove smell.
T-head feels tart and beer finished fruity. Definitely find the "domestic" style coupled with the Belgian style ale.
M-smooth mouthfeel upfront with a bite and dry finish.
O-expected more out of a Russian River/Sierra Nevada collab. This beer should have sat on the shelf for a few years since aging would enhance this beers qualities. Might be enjoyed by some who is a follower of the Saison/sour-beer genres.

Poured into a large brandy snifter. Pours hazy orange with a quickly dissipating white head. Plenty of bubbles can be seen rising from the bottom of the glass. There is the barnyard yeast funk that comes through in the aroma. It smells fruity (apple, pear, lemon) and grassy. There is some spiciness as well. The Belgian yeast, grassy, and spice notes hit the mouth first. There is some tartness, but this is not strong. The body is light to medium with abundant carbonation. The finish is crisp and dry. This is a very good beer that would likely improve with age. It doesn't quite live up to expectations, but it is still worth a try if you like wild ales.

The resulting beer, from the great minds of Sierra Nevada and Russian River, manifests in a mildly rustic, Belgain fruity, and conservative "wild" ale that may not evoke excitement with the staunch fans of sour ales, but may provide the glimpse into the sour world for the uninitiated.

Pouring a hazy burnish gold color, the beer opens with yeasty appearances and topped by cottony yellowish foam. Solid retention outlasts the acidity and provides pockets of lace around the glass.

The scent of Belgian pale ales is alive and well and rests just beyond the limey and earthy overtones from the brett-brux. Underneath, there's the scent of bread dough, light apple and berry esters with a balancing tone of white pepper and perhaps a dash of cumin.

Flavors of fresh baking bread, semi-starchy sweetness and straw start the show and provides a firm foundation for the natural esters and spices of yeast to rest upon. Green apples, pears, under ripened berries and a tropical hint of papaya give the beer its understated fruitiness. Similarly, the taste of white pepper, celery seed, and fresh cut herbs, and grass balance the fruit, yeast, and malt character well. But the star of the show is the wild character of brettanomyces that casts an earthen shadow over the beer with hints toward weathered attic wood, must, brine, dried limes, mild leather and horse hair. Though the effects from wild micro flora seem young and restrained, they merely add a footnote of complexity and without turning the beer absolutely sour.

Early bready malt textures turn powdery and semi-dry to finish as the sweetness fades from the mouth and a light woody tannin pang substitutes hop bitterness and lead a light citrus acidity into the next sip.

Unlike the usually brash brett beers, this one plays well with others and allows the standard taste of Belgian pale ales to command the flavor profile, at least for now. Age will surly prove otherwise.

750 ML bottle into three snifters (three of us split them up) at KnB Wine Cellars in San Diego, Calif., on July 28, 2012. One finger of head, but would have been more if poured all the way to the top. Hazy straw yellow golden honey color. Bubbly, frothy head/lacing with light retention.

Smelled curdly milk, pear, puke, lemon, tart.

Tasted similar to the smell – pear, tart, less puke, bland, not too tart of sweet.

Light-to-medium body. Slick texture. Above average carbonation. Long, sour finish. A bit refreshing.

A bit disappointed beer overall. I was expecting a bit more. It didn’t help that I had just had the Supplication, which was fantastic. Glad I tried it though.

Big fizzy head fades fairly quickly, hazy golden tan color.

Nose definite Brett but light, funk, Belgian golden malts and light fruity esters, light fusel booze, hint of grassy, meaty Belgian yeast aroma. The more it warms the more Brett comes out but never big.

Taste lots of Belgian golden sweet malts, hint of candy sugar like, caramelized toasty malts. Booze comes on strong, with light fusel alcohol. Some fruity esters, and light Belgian yeast. Fairly sweet, and barely any Brett. It's got some bitterness too probably from the yeast. Finish drier and light bitter, hint of funk and bready malts, and light Belgian yeast and malt flavors, and bit of booze. As it warms more funk and earthy Brett yeast.

Mouth is med bodied, good carb, plenty of booze.

Overall eh. I was expecting a lot with the two breweries involved, and Brett, but was fairly lackluster overall, a bit too sweet, not enough Brett, not so enticing bitterness, and too much booze. Quite disappointed I got so many bottles, but we'll see how they age.

A - pale, yellowish gold with a huge, fizzy, bubbly, white head that fades after a few seconds

S - grapes, pear, a hint of spice, some Belgian yeast

T - grapes, pear, faint Belgian yeast, some grass, maybe a little husky or wheaty

M - crisp, a bit warm, medium bodied

This is as advertised; Belgian style beer with Brett. It comes across as something akin to a Belgian Strong Pale Ale or a toned down Tripel. It has decent flavor, but ultimately I found it a bit disappointing. I won't be getting another bottle, but I'm glad I tried it once.

Pours a golden straw color with a honey hue. The pure white head is pillowy and is fed by a constant stream of bubbles. Good retention.

The aroma is oaky with a green apple tartness. Some musty white grapes and hay. Lightly peppery and lemony.

The taste is of a pale malt, somewhere between crackery and bready. I am picking up some rust notes as well. There is a light fruitiness to the brew; green apple and lemon. The beer has an oak like flavor from the brett and some hay. A bit of a grassy bitterness.

The feel is light with prickly carbonation which leads to a crisp feel. Good balance between sweet, tart and bitter. Drinks quite well and very refreshing.

Not the most flavorful wild ale that I have had. The yeast provides some flavor but not as much as I have seen in the style. It might not have strong flavors but is damn drinkable.
