A: Pours a hazy orange color with a small white head, rather fizzy, with minimal retention. No lacing on any of the glass.

S: Better as it warms. SOme faint aprcito, a little peach, pear, and pineapple. There is slight green grassy aroma as well. Slightly funky, not really tart though. Slight generic lacto aroma.

T: More pear/apple than apricot, which was slightly the reverse on the aroma. The beer is slightly spicy with a little bit of clove and a bit of biscuity malt.

M: Medium bodied, slightly heavier than most AWAs I have had. Lively carbonation, but very sour/tart.

O: A pretty good beer, with the Brett shining through. I guess I was hoping for more of a sour. I think this beer has some aging potential, but only grabbed one bottle. At $15, a little steep IMO.

Brux Domesticated Wild Ale, A Russian River & Sierra Nevada Collaboration. A dry and complex Belgian-style ale refermented in the bottle with Brettanomyces bruxellensis. Brewed and bottled by Sierra Nevada Brewing Company, Chico, CA, in collaboration with with Russian River Brewing Company.

Caged and cork, 750 ml bottle. Clear, bright amber color, under a slim white head that dissipates quickly.

Aroma: this one will take some time, as it's not throwing out any ordinary flavors or associations. There's some fruit, but no sweetness, no hops, very dry, and none of the typical descriptors for a sour brew come out of this nose. There's some of that horse blanket rearing it's head, now, some of the cat pee shows up, some of the funk.

Taste: lean bodied, short finish, light on flavor. Mild malt character, negligible hop contribution, but the yeast is felt, and tasted. The cat pee returns to the flavor, hints of lemon, dry, yes, again, but , alas, there's very little of anything else going on.

I'll take a minute to read the label. "What began as a mutual admiration between Sierra Nevada's Grossman family and Russian River's Cilurzos has grown and progressed into genuine friendship. Brux began as an idea and has grown into something altogether different. …The liquid manifestation of change over time….Refermented in the bottle with Brettanomyces bruxellensis, Brux will change and develop over time. Copper-colored, dry and complex, with slightly tart notes of green grass, pear, spice and lemon---this ale will progress in the bottle for many years."

Well. damnit, why didn't I read this first? Why did I make the dunder-headed move of actually drinking this bottle fresh and expecting something good, when I should have sat on it for years, to see what happens when it develops? Will it gain flavor, where now it has virtually none?

I'm sorry, but beers should be judged based on how they taste when they're placed on the shelves. This one as it is should be filed under: "meh." No, wait, make that "Blah."

large format into a orval goblet

a golden with an orange hue, cloudy, small loud, yes loud, foamy and FAST dissipating head. no lacing, no legs. this is the least apeeling part of this beer.

s green apples, oak, yeast,

t starts out mild with a tart apple beginning. the midlle of it has a fresh clean yeast which faddes into a pear, grape and apricot ending. the aftertaste stays for a short perios of time and has a bitter fruit, yeast flavor

m crisp, sharp, prickly. it burns a little bit on the roof of your mouth, but i a good way and not from alcohol. there is a good amount of carbonation.

o extremely easy to drink. i like it. i have oe more left over and ill let it sit for a while.

i recommend it.

The beer is orange and mostly clear, showing only a mild haze. Atop the beer rests a thin white head. The aroma offers apples, malt, brettanomyces, light spice. The flavor is ok. A bit malty, with some well water character. Brett is there, but this beer seems to play it safe. A tiny bit of tangy citrus with an apple juice finish. Maybe this will improve with age, but even so, this is a step (or more) behind many other notables in this genre.

750ml bottle poured into my Russian River tulip. Bright orange amber in color with a thin, fizzy head to it. The head faded pretty quickly but a steady stream of carbonation bubbles continually rose from the bottom of the glass.

The aroma has a very nice subtle funk to it. I get some sour citrus notes with both orange and lemon flavors coming out. Pale, bready malts give it some balancing sweetness. Very nice aroma to it, everything comes together very well.

The taste shows a little more of the juicy citrus coming out. I get some sour notes up front, but it turns a little more funky towards the finish. Some hop bitterness helps give it balance in the finish. The funky, sour flavors are very modest but add some great depth and complexity to the juicy citrus flavors.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied with high carbonation. Overall, it was a really nice beer. Everything came together very well in it. It was easy drinking, refreshing and well balanced for the style. The funk and sour flavors were a little more reserved then I normally would like, but overall I thought it was a very good beer.

Shared by Thorpe, thanks. Beer is brown and hazy with a tan off white head and some lacing, low retention, moderate to low carbonation.

Aroma is malty with a definite brett b aroma.

Beer is medium to light in body and has this maltiness and a nice yeast palate, with a good brett presence, the beer might get more yeast palate as it ages but it is a nice beer already, i liked it.

A - pale, yellowish gold with a huge, fizzy, bubbly, white head that fades after a few seconds

S - grapes, pear, a hint of spice, some Belgian yeast

T - grapes, pear, faint Belgian yeast, some grass, maybe a little husky or wheaty

M - crisp, a bit warm, medium bodied

This is as advertised; Belgian style beer with Brett. It comes across as something akin to a Belgian Strong Pale Ale or a toned down Tripel. It has decent flavor, but ultimately I found it a bit disappointing. I won't be getting another bottle, but I'm glad I tried it once.

Poured from the bottle into a tulip glass.

A faint thin soapy head is produced which doesn't really last at all or hang around much, but sits on a juicy orange and tangerine body, with lots of rising carbonation. Kind of looks like a nice peach color almost. There is practically no collar on this once it has settled.

Nose is very dry grain, with a juicy almost sweet candy orange smell and faint brett. Some mild funk sensations, but kind of toned down. Almost penny candy juice sweet.

Large punch of dry yeast in the mid palate, with large effervescent carbonation. Dry white wine finish, but also taking along the real nice fruit juice orange character with it. Some real nice malt backbone comes out on the aftertaste, giving those nice baked bread sensations too. There's a little bit of noticeable alcohol heat.

Overall rather enjoying this, a bit different and not mind blowing but a solid wild ale nonetheless.

750 mL bottle poured into a pint glass.

Appearance - Golden orange. Big head that settles quickly to a continuous layer of foam. No lacing.

Smell - Extremely bretty. A little bit acidic. Earthy brett aroma. Slight apple aroma too.

Taste - Overpowered by brett. Sharp acidic flavor, but not sour. Slight fruity malt flavor comes through before an earthy brett takes over. Dry with a slight bitterness in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Very dry. Brett has made it feel light. High carbonation.

Overall - The second brett bomb of the evening. This one hasn't fared as well as Saison du Swamp. Many similarities, but this is too bretty.

Large bottle, caged and corked

Pours heavily clouded quickly departing light tan head that results in next to no film and very minor lacing. Disappointing and frankly surprising from two so highly viewed breweries.

Fruity and inviting nose.

Fruity is the most dominant characteristic. Sour and tart? Not really, maybe in a few years, but the general theme with this brew is a bit of disappointment. I get mostly ripe plums and some apricot, but minor at best funkyness or herbal qualities. Ehh....pleasant enough and went well with lunch, but not really worth the price.

Slightly murky light golden color with a quickly diminishing white head. Earthy funky with a light vinous almost grape aroma offset with a hint of herbal spiciness and aspirin. Almost no carbonation, didn’t help make this any more than an average beer.

Appearance: pours a clear orange color with a short 1/2" head that falls to a spotty surface covering.

Smell: fruit and a bit of grassiness comes through to the nose.

Taste: some caramel, pear, green grapes, green apples, and a nice amount of bitterenss. The sourness from the brett is mild and not overbearing.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer. Lightly crisp throughout with a bit of drying late.

Overall: an easy to quaff beer, as the flavor profile is well balanced and a bit refreshing desite the style. Very enjoyable.

A bottle poured into some snifters with a bunch of heads. Had to give this at least a few months for some magic to happen.

BRUX pours out a beautiful golden light yellowish shade in the glass with a nice amount of bright white bubbles forming a nice cap of solidness. The cap of white lasts for quite a bit of time. A small amount of specs on the glass on the way down.

Smell is bright with some floral appeal mixed in with ripe pineapple, apple, pear and some faint brett in the back.A sparse amount of pale malt in the backing. Not terribly funky smelling, kinda like a wild saison/blond. A great nose with building as it warms.

Not a very wild beer. I get the blond characteristics. Some faint grassy hops and light florals. The brett is understated (at this time) b makes a small impact on the tounge. Pineapple and pear with trace hits of malt here and there. The alcohol does not make an appearance.

The body is a step below medium with a nice touching carb bite going for it. Not sour, just a bit of a twinge in the mouth. Not tart really either. I see this going together nicely with some light cheese samples. This is a decent beer, but more of a saison/blond hybrid of some sort IMO.

Poured from a bottle into a snifter, the beer is a rose-tinted orange coloring, both opaquely clouded and steadily carbonated. A filmy ring and island of film decorate the surface of the brew. Aromas of fruit and floral blend together for an inticing funk. Currant, raspberry, lemongrass, jasmine, and many other characteristics blend together to assault the sense of smell. Flavors of citrus fruit and apples are first onto the palate, with a backbone of cloves and banana subtly in the background. The flavors almost lend themselves to a cider style of drink. Very light and effervescent in mouth, to the point of foaming if you move or swish at all with the tongue. There is an acidity feel and taste that touches the tip of the tongue initially, and also presents itself to the back of the tongue at the end of the palate. Pear and parsley/basil spicing in the aftertaste, with a filmy, quick, slightly frothed finish. Very unique and interesting beer, and much more mild overall than some other beers utilizing Brett. This would make a good transition for people new to Wilds, or even sours.

LOOK: Pours a hazy deep golden color. White foam with lots of tiny bubbles forms, leaves some lace, and has decent retention. There was a small amount of sediment, which was swirled in.

SMELL: Yeasty, a bit funky, lightly sour smelling, with barnyard influence and has a typical rustic Belgian yeast aroma. Small flowery hop notes are there as well.

TASTE: Belgian yeast with a soft fruityness and a moderately tart twang from the Brett used in brewing. Not an over the top sour, this is more of a mainstream brew similar to an Orval with its bright Brett character and some hop notes as well. Candi sugar lends a subtle sweetness, but there is also a noticeable bitterness that keeps the brew balanced. Overall its almost like a Saison with Belgian yeast/Brett notes.

FEEL: Medium bodied, well carbonated, mildly dry, small tang in the finish along with peppery and semi-fruity yeast notes.

OVERALL: A nice crossover beer for Sierra Nevada, and definitely has the Russian River trademark tang. Certainly a successful venture for all three parties, the breweries and consumer that is. This was a bit green, and should be aged for no less than half a year to let the flavors develop, I feel this can improve greatly over time. Would pair nicely with fruited cheeses, raisin crackers and fig spread.

Corked and caged bottle with a tough to remove cork.

Clear golden amber colored beer with just a small amount of white head.

Smell is sweet with the beginnings acetic acid present. Fruity smells of peach and apple. Woody scents, oak and vanilla. Floral yeast aroma with a rather strong rose aroma.

Starts out mild with a slight sour taste but it isn't to strong. Belgian horse horse blanket and roses. Mild flavor especially for a wild ale.

Mouthfeel is good.

Overall A VERY tame wild ale, it might even convert me to like them. $17 for the bottle though, this probably will benefit from a year of age on it, the carbonation is noticeably low.

Picked up tonight at Bier Thirty for what I think is a pretty reasonable $15... Thanks Chris!!

My friend "beer guy at the COOP" Matt (reinheitsgematt) shared one of these earlier tonight... and we were both surprisingly happy.

Poured into my slim tulip... Decent head doesn't really stick around for too long... the brew is clear dark golden..

Nose is earthy with some nice fruity esters... pear and light white peach... some bits of fresh cut hay...

Flavor is much more dry than I would have guessed... again lightly earthy.. dry grass... hints of Basque Cider.. Bretty notes are mild... I honestly expected more.. maybe some minor "clove" phenols but that could be in my imagination.

With warmth more fruitiness arises.. so does some background maltiness .. sorta honey notes.... That will give the "BRUX" something to chew on for a while.. Sorta $$ pricey note for a reasonably available brew is cool.

Body is light/medium .... seems a touch thick for an AWA... carbonation is good (small bubble) and sorta spritzy..

I guess I was expecting more for a collaboration from two such well established breweries.. Still pretty damn good... I will buy more and doubt I will touch one for a year.

Very cool collaboration idea.

Brux - the contradictorily called "domesticated wild ale" - seems like it's been spared the human touch; this flat and murky beer doesn't look the least bit polished, almost as if it escaped quality control altogether. It resembles peach nectar in colour and complexion (and carbonation).

Just as it looked thick and pulpy as a fruit nectar, so too does it smell like one; the aroma bursts forth with a budding fruitiness, like a peach, pear, and apple orchard in full blossom. It's a reminder that yeast is truly one of the world's most magical members of the kingdom Fungi, capable of producing such intricate and nuanced aromas that are simultaneously sweet and sour.

Despite the brewery's (breweries?) claim that this would "progress in the bottle for many years" it doesn't seem to have changed much in the year and a half since its release. Those that complained of it lacking in sourness and funkiness will be disappointed to find it's changed little in those departments. It has some vinegar- and cider-like tang, but is nothing more than lightly tart.

That's not to say that it doesn't have some very redeeming (and somewhat reminiscent of Gueuze) flavours that include green apple, apricots and other orchard fruits, cereal grains, vanilla accented oak, citrus peel, and soft Oriental spicing (lemongrass, coriander and white pepper). It may not live up at all to the 'wild ale' hype but it's still a pretty tasty offering.

There's some 'barnyard', 'goaty', and 'horsey' elements to Brux but they are very minor, hardly enough to consider this beer anything more than a standard Belgian blonde that's been refermented with some Brett (which, in fairness, is all it claims to be). Still, given the brand-name power of its producers - to say nothing of the hefty price tag - I expected a little more.

Pour into my delirium tremens tulip, the beer pours a golden amber color with good head retention and light, fair lacing. The nose is absolutely exotic in this beer, as I pick up cherry, light sour funk, ginger, light vanilla, lavendar and toffee nouget. Alas, the beer doesn't taste quite as good, but it's not bad. I really think SN got a bit carried away with the amount of brett they managed to innoculate this beer with, as it's a bit over the top. Otherwise, I get considerable cherry, light butter and vanilla at the forefront, all of which is completely dominated by the brett flavor (I really think that's where the butter flavor is coming from). There's something of a woodruff syrup flavor to this beer as well, which is odd, to say the least. Mouthfeel is medium bodied to full, with a moderately sweet, brett infused finish. The funky brett flavor is really a bit much.

A very interesting beer, but ultimately, not something I can see wanting very often.

Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a hazy medium golden amber. Massive white head during pour that dissipated immediately into a thin layer of foam with light lacing. Aroma of light fruit; apple, pear, lemon; light saison yeast and a hint of brett. Flavor is the same light fruit, a nice light sweet malt and a hint of brett. Finishes slightly dry with light fruit and the memory of the brett. Light bodied with very active carbonation giving a nice mouth feel. They nailed this one for me; I'm not a big brett fan, but enjoy saisons with a light touch of wild yeast. I guess I'm too domesticated, but if so, they made this one for my taste. Really glad I took a chance on this.

A collaboration between Sierra Nevada and Russian River? Sign me up! Tall 750ml caged and corked bottle purchased from Slowbeer in Melbourne.

Pours a clear, bright, slightly coppery golden colour, with a fizzling head that froths at first, and the subsides to a very mild ring. Body is fine, slippery and light, holding some minimal carbonation. No lace. It's actually remarkably unassuming, and much less exciting than I thought it might be.

Nose is better. Definite earthy Brett tones, apple skin, sweet sugar toffee, fairy floss, some banana leaf. But it's actually much more subdued than I expected. There's a hint of funk, but no more, and certainly no wild acidity. I'm a little bit surprised and a little unenthused.

Taste is similarly subdued: in fact, perhaps even more so. There's that sugary sweetness coming through again, more toffee, laced with just suggestions of earthiness, some faint horsey tones, and some cherry- and apple-skin on the finish. Feel is exceptionally light and thin.

Overall, I'm massively unimpressed. This is tame, dull flat and uninteresting. Holy crap this needed something more: it really is lifeless. It ends up "domesticated" to such a degree that it's insipid, weak and unable to fend for itself in the wild.

S: The nose lends a nice little fruit bouquet; greean and red apples with a little pear and spice

T: A little funky, Belgian yeast, sweet and fruity with pears, apples and some allspice. It has lightly funked, Earthy and lingering sweetnes on the finish

M: Medium bodied, a little slick, flat on the tongue I felt

O: Good but not one I would pay $16 for again.

Pours a hazy, dark golden orange color with apricot colored edges and a 1.5 finger, frothy white head that slowly settles into a lasting ring. Spotty lacing left behind.

Earthy aroma with grass, oak and musty brett notes along with lactic funk, light fruit and pale malt. The earthy grass and straw notes compliment the brett nicely but as it warms, it becomes a bit one dimensional with the wild yeast overpowering things a bit. Subtle lactic funk with some apple, pear and biscuit.

On the lighter end of medium bodied with a tart, puckering mouthfeel that drops off mid-palate where the funky wild yeast takes over. Musty, dry and funky with a really prominent brett character that lingers over some light fruit, lactic funk and pale malt into a slightly boozy, harsh acidic finish. Not a bad beer but the finish is a bit rough and after a while the brett flavor completely overpowers the other characteristics.

Poured from 750mL corked & caged bottle into a tulip.

Appearance: medium-light golden hue with a light haze and a robust effervescence. Head pours several fingers of fizzy ivory foam which dissipates rather quickly. Not too bad.

Smell: sweet malt with a light, refreshing tartness. Simple, but clean and enticing.

Taste: sweet malt with a good, rich flavor rather like a tripel. Tartness is low, which I wasn't expecting, based on the smell, but it works well here. There's a little bit of Brett-y funk in the mix along with a chalkiness that smooths the whole thing out. An interesting selection of flavors that I think works quite well.

Mouthfeel: medium-light body with a mammoth carbonation and concomitant bodacious creaminess. Hot damn tamale! Love it.

Overall: a very interesting wild ale. It is not over the top, but it develops a nice range of wild ale flavors. Good stuff; I'd have it again.

A- This beer pours a slightly dense deep copper color with a violent carbonation of microbubbles. The loud fizz supports a thick white head of foam.

S- The dry clean aroma has a faint hint of yeasty esters and mineral notes.

T- The nice dry crisp flavor is smooth with a tartness in the finish. There are some unripe pear notes that start to come through with a green apple hint in the finish.

M- The light mouthfeel has a full creamy fizz in the finish and no alcohol heat.

O- This beer is nice yet very subtle flavors and the brett is not overpowering but it will be interesting to see if this chances over time.
