Just enjoyed this at the SNBC brewery and it was great!
I enjoy the regular Dubbel a lot so when I saw this on tap, I had to try it.
Poured into an Ovila goblet, a semi dark amber color with a small bit of head which dissipated fairly quickly.
First scents of fruit which were also present when drank.
Went down super easy with great after-taste and while not what I expected, tasted like a cider.
Went down nicely and while not super high abv, it crept up on me.
Glad they had this on tap...even better that they had it at the shop for me to brings few home because its exclusive to the pub!

I had this on-tap at Max's during Baltimore beer week. Served in a tasting glass.

Appearance: The beer pours a reddish dark amber color with a ring of off white head around the pour.

Smell: This one smells rather tart with some red wine and red berry notes showing up right away. After that I get some sweet malt and cranberries. There is a faint smell that reminds me of dark fruit.

Taste: The wine has definitely taken over here. I'm getting the cranberry notes along with the red wine. Behind the wine notes I'm getting a malty sweetness that's a bit bready. The bread notes stick around with the tart notes through the finish.

Mouthfeel: The body is medium with lots of tingly carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: The wine tartness seemed to take over the dubbel flavors a bit too much for my liking. I expected this to be a sweeter beer.

Pint at JRyans Syracuse NS for 6$ - part od CSNY beer week

Appearance - Reddish copper colour with an average size fizzy off white head. There is a low amount of carbonation showing and there is some decent lacing. The head lasted for 3-4 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Malts, dark fruits, wood, yeast

Taste & Mouth - There is a below average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, dark fruits, and some sour cherry notes. There is also a woodiness and some spicy yeasty notes. It ends with a sour cherry aftertaste.

Overall - Happy I had the chance to try this one.. very complex tasting and bold yet well balanced flavour wise. They would sell a ton of this if it was bottled.

On tap at Tony's Darts Away about a month ago...

SN Red wine Barrel Aged Ovila Dubbel

A- tap pour to snifter produces a 1 finger tan head resting on a amber body. Head recedes quick leaving almost no lacing. 3.5

S- awesome smell of red wine, tart cherries, and sweet malt. 4.5

T- similar to the smell the red wine barrel aging provides a tannic and slightly tart cherry taste to the base dubbel. The sweetness and tartness play off each other excellent. 4.5

M- lighter carbonation as expected and
Medium body. 4

O- a wonderful beer. I could drink a lot of this stuff! 4.5

On tap at max's the other day, as part of BBW.

The beer pours a fairly dark amber color with good head retention and lacing. There is a prominent wine aroma in the nose, but it blends well with the rootbeer, honey and spice I'm picking up as well. This is pretty impressive. The flavor profile is nearly as good, and is very complex. Once again the wine presence dominates, but it blends well with the brown sugar, honey and spice I'm picking up as well. The wine flavor imparts something of a light sour component, which balances and buoys the modest sweetness in this beer very nicely. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a fairly long, wine and sour finish. Alcohol is nearly undetectable in this well crafted beer.

Pretty interesting and pretty impressive.

The incredible overlay of wine barrel aging to the sturdy Ovila Dubbel trancends the classy ale from the simplified palate of American brewed, Belgian inspired ale to the added complexities and rustic charm that more authentic dubbel ale exhibit.

But like many other dubbel ales, the beer pours with a hazy veil of yeast that diffuses the hue of redish brown, bronze, and rust. Ruby highlights penetrate the haze for a cloudy glow from behind. A creamy off white head releases from the beer and promptly caps the beer with long lasting froth and concentric lacing.

An expected whiff of caramel, hard candy, nuts, and fruit soothes the nose and captures with it spicy elements of fresh cracked peppercorn, cedar, cider, and a tinge of white grape. The common fruit esters of dates, figs, plumbs and dark berries are heightened by grape and apple complements from the barrel. Similarly the spice notes invite wood and acidity.

Medium sweet taste starts candy-like but is braced by nutty malt taste and dry creamy flavor. This is the perfect underpinning for the tart fruit taste and dry peppery spice to attract the taste buds with boldness and balance. The full fruity middle palate sheds its candied upstart and is a prelude for the spicy, twangy, and dry toasty finish to come. Wine flavors from the yeast and barrel converge to dry the beer with berry-like acidity that lingers in aftertaste.

Medium bodied as well; the beer's creamy early palate stubbornly lingers deep into the taste and reluctantly allows the beer to develop into its classic spritzy champagne-like character. But with the assistance from the barrels, the added wood tannin, winy-cidery acidity, and spicy warmth closes the beer with toasty, peppery dryness that evokes the charm of Trappist dubbel ales.

I consider this charming ale to be Ovila 2.0 because it's a better version than the original and begins to make me think it may actually be made in Belgium. 3.0 should be forthcoming.

Pours a dark brown with a muddy red tinge. Quickly fleeting foam cap that literally leaves zero lacing. Overall i dont want to spend too much time with this, the beer had a nice almost sour red wine quality with sour cherry and vinous notes along with wine like tannins. My main problem was this beer had a dry wet cardboard finish almost like a corked bottle of wine. It also had a slight diactyl character to it, not a bg fan of this and hope it was an off bottle.
