A dark burgundy color, classic Sierra Nevada foam that’s thick and clingy. Big American hop notes--tasty but also a bit too familiar. Some sweet malt there too. Flavor is again big on hops, but there’s also a considerable malt heft to make this one not just another IPA. The finish is a bit sweet, which is true to style, but it’s a bit much for me. Overall, I wasn’t a fan of the strength of the brew or the toasty/sweet malt finish and somewhat predictable hop bill. It was by no means a bad beer, just not that exciting. I seem to have enjoyed the previous year’s imperial red more.

A 12oz bottle with a bottled-on date of July 2013. The label says Imperial Red Ale - Beer Camp #95; not sure why this has been listed on BA as 'Blood Shot'. Picked up a while back from Trembling Madness in York. Described as an imperial red ale stuffed with West Coast hops.

Poured into a Duvel tulip. Bottle conditioned. A deep, hazy reddish-brown hue with tons of floating sediment and medium carbonation. Yields a large head of creamy off-white foam that lasts for a few minutes before settling as a patchy surface layer. Nice lacing. Aroma of resinous hops with hints of pine, weed, orange peel, subtle citrus, sweet caramel malt, mild earthy yeast and stewed hops. A twinge of cardboard in the background. Pretty good.

Tastes of intense aromatic hops with a dry, bitter finish. Notes of pine resin, dank weed, orange peel, mild citrus, caramel malt, faint earthy yeast and stewed hops. Well-attenuated, followed by a powerful hop-driven bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and tingly, with pleasant carbonation and good body. Hop oils strip the palate. Very astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of bitter aromatic hops, pine resin and caramel malt.

Extreme hops, resulting in serious bitterness. Looks alright (if a bit full of sediment), while the aroma and flavour are dominated by powerful pine-laden hop notes underpinned by a caramel malt backbone. Nice body that tantalises the tongue. Good stuff - my impression is that some of the aromatic subtlety has faded but a solid brew nonetheless. I believe this was a one-off but worth sampling if you encounter it.

12oz bottle poured into a pilsner glass. 3189120:39 and 149 13 C-2 1526 S are both printed on the shoulder of the bottle.

Pours a slightly cloudy brownish ruby with a big creamy head that dissipates very slowly into an almost powdery looking pile. Heavy lacing. Lots of fine carbonation. Smell is malty, slightly pine, overall fairly mild.

Taste is a nice rich malty red with a nice hoppy bitterness. More bitterness on the second sip - piney. Not terrific, but pleasing. Caramel, nutty.

Mouthfeel is fairly dry. Overall, not bad at all. I like it, and it suits me right now.
